In times of scarcity and deprivation civility tends to take a back seat to necessity. In the days of the great depression the chain gang had two motivators: Up on a horse with a shotgun was the walking boss. If you decided to rabbit, he killed you. Down in the field with the men and his bull whip was the straw boss. If you were not diligent, that whip would find you. Between the two of them they usually got things done. If you were truly strong willed and refused to work there was the box. The box was a welded steel structure in the middle of the compound painted black. Here in Maine they do most of the pre-commercial thinning of the forests, plant most of the trees and pick most of the crops. Do you want to do that kind of work? I think not.
