$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('rangerone314', 'W')onder what it is like to be able to find the spare time to go to a protest?

Ironically, some of the protesters were furloughed to save money. So the more .gov employees you furlough the bigger the protests get.

The problem is that the middle class is expected to do all the sacrificing and heavy lifting and the rich and the poor don't have to do anything, in order to solve the budget problem.

Screw that.

The rich accumulated an obscene share of the country's wealth and income during the 1990's and 2000's... while the middle class goes down the crapper.

The Republican / Right-Wing viewpoint is that there are winners and losers, and why should the winners have to share with the losers, they're losers.

2nd corollary Winning is all that matters, cheating, lying, anything goes, as long as you win.

Progressive / Left-Wing used to be, If you shared all of the world resources, there would be enough for everyone. That has not been the case since sometime before 1980 as population outstripped the ability of the planet to support it.

So, it has since evolved to, there needs to be a guaranteed safety net, below which no one (no one in the Western World anyway) should be allowed to fall below. That the purpose of Government includes the social welfare which is this safety net.

2nd corollary We are each our brothers keeper. It's not whether we win or lose, it's how we play the game. Honesty and Integrity matters most.

For me honesty and integrity matters most. I see myself as a good person.

I would rather lose than sacrifice my honesty and integrity, for those are core pillars of my soul, of who I am as a person.

To what purpose to win the world, but lose one's soul?

Government is a reflection of who we are as a people. In my travels around the world, I have seen true poverty. I have seen what happens when there is no concern for the poor. I have seen what it's like when the poor have no recourse, no place to turn. Where there is no education, no clean water, no sanitation, and life is full of sickness, violence and brutality.

Do you really want that for this country? That is the real question.

It should not be seen as a safety net for individuals, but as a certain standard for our country, below which we will not let our country fall.
"For my part, whatever anguish of spirit it may cost, I am willing to know the whole truth; to know the worst and provide for it." - Patrick Henry

The level of injustice and wrong you endure is directly determined by how much you quietly submit to. Even to the point of extinction.

No middle class? That might be news to more than a few demographers. How about starting with all the Bernie Madoff-types that have slipped through the cracks?
