We left TV when we bought the farm in 2005. No regrets. We own some nice HD monitors and rent movies/programs from Netflix. This is a much more convenient way to get entertainment. You watch what you want, when you want and your not subjected to the evil of commercials.

I work in the entertainment industry, so thank you to those who still watch TV and movies. You're helping support me and my friends. :)

I still own an old style TV. Don't plan to replace it until it breaks, and the one I bought my parents (who are now deceased, so I guess I end up with that TV too) also breaks. Unfortunately, I may then have to buy an expensive modern version, as the old style seems to be seldomly sold anymore (re Best Buy discontinuing to sell them).

Does that make me about the last person in America, including "poor" people to own a non-flat-screen TV as their primary TV?

I've HATED marketing for decades and absolutely refused to pay any attention to it, as a matter of principle. Until the DVR, I muted at commercial time. With the DVR, TV on DVD, and streaming from the likes of Netflix, why does ANYONE watch commercials?
Given the track record of the perma-doomer blogs, I wouldn't bet a fast crash doomer's money on their predictions.

Instead of cable TV, I have a Mac Mini with Netflix on a 42" Plasma. Also through Mac you get a wondrous media center application called Plex, which allows you to connect to all the free internet media streams of already-broadcasted television programs. Also an online university. All with no stupid ads.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Sixstrings', 'I') have a forty something inch HD 1040p; ... I have cable but I mostly watch Netflix stuff.

Ditto. Netflix streaming has rendered obsolete the cable movie channels. Netflix has better HD picture quality, but without any commercials. And Netflix is 1/3 the price of cable. I haven't had the urge to watch TV in over 6 months.

I stopped watching TV in 2005 as there was nothing good on after they canceled Star Trek. It was all about the commercials anyway telling me that I needed to buy XYZ to be a real person. Hey I don't need a talking box telling me how to live as I am intelligent enough to make my own decisions. Tossed the TV to the curb for good in 2007. Good riddance. I don't listen to radio either.

What's so wrong with having access to a little entertainment?

Like others on here I watch mostly dvd's and have a dvr.
That means I'm just watching the shows and not the ads.
The shows I pick are pretty well done.
Not having to watch ads makes owning a TV a whole different experience.

(I see my original post got jettisoned, maybe it wasn't colorful enough to fit right in :-D )

Having four (old-fashion) T.V.s, we have T.V., but we don't really watch it. We cut our subscription to lifeline basic to save money. It was the best thing we ever did for the family. I cannot imagine how destructive it must be to raise a kid with the parents checked-out watching the damn thing. Even worst, having the kid be a zombie! O.K. so we just transferred our zombie skills to the internet, very true! We added a room in our remodel to make a 'family' room. It HAS NO T.V.! I didn't want it to become the ZOMBIE room. It is now a conversation/reading room and/or music room. I could not have been happier the day we disconnected extended basic, digital zombieland channels, need for five-speaker surrounded sound and all that. Days of wasting half-hour each evening determining all-over-again that there is nothing worth watching is gone. That adds up to a lot of time over a year.

I am thinking of doing a hazardous materials dump somewhere to get rid of all these tube sets, but they're still used occasionally. Sometimes, you just get lonely I guess :)

I thought I would keep my 32" Sony Wega CRT with completely flat screen that I bought in 2002 forever. It was an awesome TV. Then the power circuit board went fzzzt and it started detecting overvoltages when there was none at start up so it would shut the TV down. I researched it and I think I could have taken it into work and desolder a few chips and replace with some socketed versions and restored operation. I was seriously considering that, then I said WTF, the prices of flat panels had come down so much. So I bought a 42 inch LG, network enabled LED backlit TV and am so glad I did. It's actually brighter than the tube, 16:9, uses less power, bigger and networked.

Three TVs here, for two people. (But one TV rarely gets turned on.) All the Dish channels. I guess the money would be better spent elsewhere, but we're not poor (though certainly not rich), and I figure if it's my destiny to have lived through the peak of human civilization (in this iteration, anyway) then why not enjoy the fruits of that civilization a bit while it still exists. Plus, I figure that'll be like the last thing to go, so it's like a civilization collapse alarm. The government will use TV to pacify people and prevent utter chaos as long as is possible. No more TV, time to bug out (or bug in, as the case may be).

We have a few TVs around the place. I like having the TV on when I'm working on other things. It all boils down to what a person watches. I like science programs and documentaries myself.

I HATE the crap my wife watches, like Dancing with the Stars, Top model ( top anorexic ) and most reality shows.

I did catch one cool reality show the other night that I'm going to try to watch again if I time it right. It was called 'Victorian Farm'. Kind of self explanitory.

I opted not to have cable installed when I last moved and the main difference that I've noticed between having TV and not having TV is that I no longer veg out on the couch for hours at a time watching shows I really have no interest in. I still watch a fair amount of movies and TV shows on hulu and netflix but only the ones I actually enjoy. Not getting cable is one of the better decisions I've made in my life.
