Jackson Pollock, a major juice hound, got plastered and wrapped his car around a tree. Platinum Blonde sex symbol Jayne Mansfield was decapitated sitting in her limo. Then there were James Dean and Sam Kinison, both crashed at high speeds in the Southwest Desert. Any that I missed? I think this has the look and feel of a True Metaphor. When Vice-President Dick Cheney said "The American way of life is not negotiable" what he was really saying was that Americans will fight to the finish to keep their cars. "No Blood For Oil" may have some propaganda traction, and talk of Resource Wars makes many uncomfortable, but tell Americans they have to give up the personal freedom of going where they want, when they want in their own car and you'll have 'em seeing red. Tell a fifteen year old kid that the rules have changed and he won't get to vote and he'll maybe yawn and say, "Gee, really? How did that happen?" Tell him he won't get to own a car and you'll see genuine emotional distress. You might as well tell him he'll never get laid. Powerdown is not an option for very deep seated emotional reasons and isn't just a practical matter. We'd rather go out like James Dean.

In 1982, Princess Grace of Monaco died in car crash in Monte Carlo. The petrol head princess drived the infamous MG Rover 3500 on narrow, twisting road above Monte Carlo before she blacked out and plunged down a 15 metres embankment. She don't wear seat belt. Her daughter Stephanie suffered minor injuries.

I bet Princess Diana don't wear seat belt too.

Read all about celeb. deaths at http://www.findadeath.com/

Click on the directory in the left frame.

He did not die from it but Sammy Davis JR. lost an eye in a car wreck.

William Holden's way of assuming room temp. was one of the worst. He went from an A list international celeb. to living in total isolation. He fell down, cut his head, thought it wasn't so bad, kept bleeding, lost enough blood to make himself immobile, and it probably took him hours to die. Of those hours I'd speculate he was still conscious for at least 30 minutes at which time he realized he was experiencing death. It must have been sheer terror.

At least the car crash victims didn't have time to think about it. It might have been a few seconds of intense pain but it was over so fast.

Dale Earnhardt? Occupational hazard---but then driving to work in your own car is an occupational hazard.
Also Ian Bannen---Bite the Bullet and Flight of the Phoenix(1965) I believe the guy who played the techno guru "Q" in the James Bond movies also died in a carwreck. I think his name was Desmond Lewelyn.

Might not have been like you imagine it larry. Massive release of endorphins and dmt. Could have been the most profound experience of his life.

It's not only a lack of a car that could cause emotional distress!

I once watched a good, well mannered 12 year old boy turn into a raving, yelling maniac because he couldn't handle the fact that i had no pop in my house!

It's things like that, that make me concerned about an "age war" (after TSHTF).

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '[')size=117] "Poor Bobo came to a sticky end. He was riding in the Duc de Ventre's Hispano-Suiza when his fallen piles blew out of the car and wrapped around the rear wheel. What bothers me the most about peak oil, more so than even dying young (I've come to terms with that, note the sn), is that I might not get the chance to travel and explore this country (and continent) on my own, taking advantage of our terrific road system, well built cars and of course endless cheap gasoline. I might never get to see the Rocky Mountains or Yellowstone park; the vast deserts of Utah and Nevada, the swamps of Louisiana, or the rainforests of the Alaskan peninsula. Hell, even the entropic urban decay of LA, Pheonix and Las Vegas, or the industrial agro-business disasters of Iowa and the Central Valley holds a sentimental appeal to me (in a somewhat morbid way). I really don't think I will have an easy time living a localized life knowing what is out there that I can't access, but almost had the chance to.

In the meantime I'm making plans to tour the country as soon as a I graduate college. I just wish I had more time and didn't feel the need to rush. If I get maybe five years (till 2010), I think I should be able to see everything I want, while making a living. Anything less than that and I will feel cheated, big time. I will be pissed. Will I act rationally? Who knows. To worst thing I think I'd do would be suicide. The "not getting laid" metaphor is perfect; nothing more annoying than a cock-tease, which is what I would regard the 80's,90's and (maybe) the 00's. Immature? Maybe. But do I care? No. It'd have been different if cheap transportation and energy was never available to begin with.

The 'localized' life, if it is possible (which I doubt very much) will completely take care of the natural yearning for novelty. After a while the novelty will become a bit much to handle, but that wont matter because the goddamn novelty will just keep coming until everyone will be sick to death of novelty. And then guess what - MORE NOVELTY. The last thing anyone will care about is: 'gee, I wish I'd seen the painted desert of Arizona!'
Now as for feeling cheated, I suppose that young people in general are going to cut their ties to the older generations. Peer solidarity will become the most important thing to a generation that knows they are the first to come after the party. Brutality will be in fashion. Killers will be the leaders and honored ones.

Prefontaine, somewhat ironically.

Also, lots of celebrities have died in plane crashes, particularly musicians, since they fly in small planes a lot.
