Quite true. How many Saudi Arabia's were added to OPEC between Jimmys 1977 speech and nowadays? 5? 10? Certainly they must explain why we didn't run out in the late 80's.....oh...and thanks for avoiding even mentioning the reference provided. Can't have any debate involving the actual experts commenting on the topic, now can we? Whats a trillion barrels among friends, right? :lol:

Cantarell, like all oilfields, has an existence which starts with first production, and ends with an economic limit. Some fields live longer than others. For example, East Texas is effectively dead except for some dribbles, but for some reason internet blogs get all a-twitter over Cantarell. Why not get excited over Prudhoe? Its been declining for decades now. Perhaps we'll have this same conversation years from now over the Macondo prospect? Tupi?

While Cantarells decline is certainly bad news for a country which uses it as a source of revenue, its easier for the USA to stop using as much crude as Mexico exports to us than it is for Mexico to replace the revenue stream. Same problem Chavez is having, even though he sits on the largest oilfield on the planet. The resource curse is fierce, and in this case, the results are likely to be much worse for Mexico than the US, or even the world.

Save some drastic climate change mankind will survive but you might not like actual working setups facilitating that.

Return to feudal structures might be one of most timid forms of such new societal changes allowing survival.

Less palatable solutions down the line will include outright slavery, genocidal communistic regimes aka NK or Pol Pot's Cambodia, general anarchy aka Somalia and much more.
It may get bad enough that you will pray for an atomic war to finish it off...

Incorrect on several counts. For starters, we have been warned about this danger in 3 different centuries now...your reasoning for why the warning in this century is more important than those ones might be...anything in particular....?

And second of course we did do things in the intervening years. The efficiency and availability of solar panels and windmill generated electricity for our EV's has skyrocketed. The transportation world has changed this very year and month, peak oil in 2005 having caused a complete reversal of the engineering design of the 2nd large car manufacturer in the world. That doesn't qualify as "absolutely nothing",it qualifies as game changing technology. And its roots go back into the past decade, where the prototype work was done by the same manufacturer. Same thing is happening with fuel cells.

How about direct injection hydrogen engines for big trucks?
