What to do with a useless swimming pool??

Unread postby thaiexpat » Sun 11 Jul 2010, 22:35:34

Not sure what forum to post this on......
Back before the crash when I had a bit more money and built an in ground swimming pool. Now that time$ are tougher, [pool chemicals are oil related and expensive] as well as the elect to run the pumps. I've stopped maintenance of the pool [55 sq mtrs].
My first thought was to turn it into a home fish farm and stocked it with 60 talapia and a few koi. still ran the pump on recirculate to add oxygen and the fish thrived for 3 or 4 months then all died off in a week's time. Consult with fish farm experts tell me that the fish poop turns to nitrates and sucks the available oxygen.

So, now I'm trying to think of alternate uses for my 'cement hole in the ground' with brown water and only breeding tadpoles and the occasional snake.

Anyone have any ideas??

That idea came to mind, but I really doubt that they would waste a nuke on Thailand. Another thought would be to turn it into a diesel storage tank and landscape over it. Fill it while diesel is still cheap. Any ideas what the shelf life is on diesel??

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('thaiexpat', 'S')o, now I'm trying to think of alternate uses for my 'cement hole in the ground' with brown water and only breeding tadpoles and the occasional snake.
Around here we call that a "basement", we would put a "rec room" in it.

You may try to convert your swimming pool into big compost box.
You could process there your household waste (including poo) as well.

For fish, I would think you would need to use a siphon to vacuum out debris from the bottom. Live plants work too. Things to look out for, Nitrates, PH, Ammonia.
I have a relative with a fish farm in Thailand, I could try to find out more if your interested.

I would go with the nuclear bunker. Did you know that only 2-3 metres on concrete is enough to stop the radiation from an exploding supernova on your doorstep? A bunker is also a great secure place to store valuables and vast quantities of food.

I actually turned a pool which got turned into a pond into a chicken coop, a number of years ago. I filled it in with rubble and built a wooden frame in the pool. It's the only coop that I've ever had that a fox hasn't broken into. Add a french drain or you'll be sorry.

fish farm is a good option. you have to run your water through something with a medium that will allow oxygenation of the water. the standard pool filter is closed (pressurized) you have to pump your water into a large open-top container filled with something with surface area, (bio balls, floss, porous filter material, etc.) have openings at the bottom of the container to allow plumbing of the water back into the pool. eventually good bacteria will grow on your container medium and turn your harmful chemicals into beneficial chemicals. anything that works for a large ornamental pond will work on your pool.
Perhaps the population would be less swayed to socialism if we had fewer examples of socialism from our "Free Market Capitalists". -----fiddler dave
