What kind of question is that ? I'm Italian, have a good amount of hair, and it's all in the right places, bald-win. :)

My Bullmastiff is pretty food efficient given her size. She uses her energy wisely and in short bursts of intense energy. She will be very good at protecting out food supply I have no doubt.

I've one very mean green parrot that will eat anything that won't eat him first. He'll do Ok.

Those delicate overbred breeds with congenital defects are the ones which will go into the dustbin of history. I think that cats and dogs: mongrels and some purebreds will survive and even prosper if they have the ability to perform a much needed task: think Rat-terriers or Daschunds for vermin control. My grandmother had a few dogs that did wonders for her garden by eliminating the rabbit and gopher populations. When I am permanently situated, I fully expect to adopt a few from the local pound.

Exotics like many of the psittacines and softbills as well as the more problematic reptiles may not fare so well. Like Lateralus says: preparation preparation preparation.

We'll be using so much nuclear power in the post-PO world that we'll either breed dogs and cats that are resistant to radiation, or we'll provide our pets with little lead hats and suits to wear.

They need to fix the emoticons, because the "wink" looks like a sarcastic face.

As for brushing my arms, I've got hair in all the right places. WINK

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'E')xotic animals that are averse to cold will not do well

They'll do ok if I have a means to keep them warm. Once I've got my own place off grid and running on renewable energy, heat won't be a problem.

I was thinking that some kind of rat-terrier type would be a good dog to have. We keep chickens and meat rabbits, so sometimes we have rat/mouse problems. Would be great to have a ratter around to deal with them. However I am a bit concerned about a dog killing the chickens and rabbits if it got half a chance.

This past weekend I slaughtered 7 rabbits. They will provide 7 meals for our family of 5. There was a reasonable amount of offcuts produced in that process. I was thinking to myself at the time that I could use the offcuts to feed a small dog for quite some time.

Come on, people... as much as you love your pets, you have to admit that you're going to get pretty hungry once the 3,000 mile Caesar Salad is gone. Sure, you'd feel terrible about it now, but when we begin to experience mass famine similar to that of the third-world (post peak) and you've gone a few days without food, ol' Fido is gonna look pretty tasty on a rotisserie with an apple in his mouth. People in poor countries eat dogs and cats on regular basis (especially in Asian countries), do you honestly think we won't be chown' down on some canine when the shit hits the fan? Within 20 years time we'll all be eating St. Bernard stew and Kitty Casserole. Hell, I bet cannibalism will probably make a comeback too.

Face it, pets are a luxury and their will be no time for luxuries in this new era of oil (or lack there of.)
