I've made plenty of "bows" in my childhood. None were fancy or even remotely professsional but all would cast an arrow well enough to take small game. Bows can be bought second hand if you're concerned with expense. Or you could use an atlatl, a throwing stick or a slingshot. A good slingshot can be very deadly for small game. Prey can also be taken with snares and nets although these can be a danger to domestic pets.
I will be raising chickens for eggs and meat. But probably not producing all of my meat on my own place - I've contracted with my sister to get rabbit meat from her. I used to be mostly vegetarian but have recently become convinced that's not necessarily the most healthy diet. So far I have lost weight on the paleo diet which is important because I have congenital high blood pressure and anything I can do to keep it down is beneficial.
