$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '
')I'd be one of those exceptions. I've been a misanthrope all my life, in the classic sense of the word:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'n').
One who hates or mistrusts humankind.

I don't hate people, but I sure as hell don't trust them.

I think you speak for a lot of us when you say that. I don't hate people and I go out of my way to be a fair guy but experience tells me that if you give people the opportunity to screw you (if it's to their benefit) they'll do it 9 out of ten times.

What makes me a misanthrope is it does bother me that humans can't destroy this planet fast enough for the sake of profit.

Example: The other day I go into a new electric bike shop because I'm looking to buy one in the near future. I start talking to the lady in the shop and I find that she is not only Peak Oil aware but she is an activist. She quit the corporate scam, dropped out, raised her kids and taght them how to live sustainably, raising their own food, living with a small footprint. I was very impressed with her and I made an appointment to look at her garden to see how she is able to provide almost 60% of her food needs on a 60x100 lot minus buildings.

I really got caugt up in her enthusiasm and I began to imagine that maybe we can work our way out of this impending crisis and save the planet. Her attitude was so great it blew me away. But just before I left I asked her what she sees as the main obstacle to saving the planet. She frowned and then said with real emotion: Greed!

"Well, that's our nature isn't it and there's no changing that is there?" I replied.

"I can always hope", she said without conviction.

I left a few minutes later sad that I had won the debate. I want to believe...but as a misanthrope I can't fool myself for very long!
For reasons long forgotten two mighty warrior tribes went to war and touched off a blaze which engulfed them all. Without fuel they were nothing. They had built a house of straw. The thundering machine sputtered and stopped.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Plarin', 'A') lot of the members of this forum view society as a foolish bunch of lemmings that deserve to die, it seems. Maybe that's just because most everyone who thinks this way is vocal about it, but... I'm curious what makes them tick like that.

Opinions?

Yeah, you could probably lump me in with the "lemmings must die" crowd.

I don't know if I am a cynic, or a sociopath, I have been trying to figure out why I value human life less than others.

Conditioning, probably.

I am not religious, or put too much stock in the sanctity of human life. There are 6 billion of us on this planet. It's not like we are a rare, and endangered species. (at the moment)

I certainly value my own life , and those of my family and friends, but I am resigned to the fact that people die. Sometimes in great numbers.
I would certainly help to save a person's life, or offer assistance, but I just don't really care anymore when disasters, or strife occur in some far away place.

I guess i have become numbed by over saturation of bad news.
