$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('sklump', 'S')o, while it's a shame when creatures die without need, I don't see why people put dogs in particular on a pedestal. People really, really love their dogs. I think it's a sad sign of a decadent empire when our pets get better care than our poor, let alone the poor in other parts of the world.

So what? There's been a very close relationship between humans and dogs for millennia. In the distant past how "decadent" was it that unga the neanderthal had a dog who helped him hunt, and when they made a kill they feasted together while in the next valley over munga had no dogs and went hungry. I agree that people take it overboard (your decadence links) But it's more than just "loving their dogs", the symbiotic relationship goes back probably hundreds of thousands of years and it hasn't always been humans having dogs as "pets" only. What about modern seeing-eye dogs, police and military dogs, beasts of burden like sled dogs, search and rescue dogs, hunting dogs, herding dogs, guard dogs, etc.etc.

Some would say that loving and caring for dogs is one of our very few remainng human instinctive behaviors.

Yeah it seems a lot of people really hate dogs, simply because other people love them. What the f*ck is that about? In any case we've domesticated these animals and we owe it to them to continue to care for them. To not to do so would be like having kids and dropping them off on a random street corner to let them fend for themselves, before letting them learn to walk. Yes, I just compared the suffering of our pets to that of our children. Frankly, I care a lot more about my dogs than some Congolese warriors in the Afriacan jungle. For one thing, the former are A LOT MORE CIVILIZED.... Now don't get me wrong, I'm not some "human's are evil, animals are cute and innocent and we should all be vegans" type of moron. I just don't see how some people can be so offended by the fact that people in rich countries keep pets. It's not as if the crap food we are giving them is going to the poor anyway, and if it did, that'd be another example of what an awful society we are. If people get joy out of caring for a pet, what do you care?

Regarding cars, I've actually heard of people filing law suits against owners to pay for the damage to their vehicles after hitting (and killing) their dogs. Apparently they can do this. I mean, sh*t happens, pets are going to be hit by cars. But just because the animal happens to have an owner doesn't mean they should pay for the fact that you were too stupid/slow to brake in time. What if you hit a deer, or better yet, a moose? Would you sue nature for not containing the animal within "designated wilderness"? Seriously... We are pretty good about keeping our dogs in the house and on a leash, as we live on a busy street. But they do get out, maybe once every two years. And let me tell you, anyone who tried any kind of law suit bs after hitting one of them, well, they might find something interesting in the gasoline tank of their beloved machine as they start it up for their 40 mile commute some weekday morning...

Wow, that's just asking for it. If some jack@$$ hit and killed your kid and then wanted you to pay 500$ to fix his front bumper, his days are numbered. Any sane parent would take him out on the spot.

But where does this kind of thing happen? Here in the US, the pedestrian always has the right of way (Where I guess dogs don't...)

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'B')ut where does this kind of thing happen?

I have a friend who was out one evening having a good time and was struck by a vehicle in a parking lot that left him disabled for life. During my friends recovery the driver of the vehicle went to the police and was asking how he was going to recover the $$$ to repair his precious vehicle. True story! My friend when he recovered found out about this and began to take steps to suit the idiot. Being that this individual had questionable US citizenship and no assets it would have been useless to suit him so he dropped the case.
