$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('eastbay', 'I') spent part of this morning cleaning off fresh gang graffiti from fences in our neighborhood. As I was powerwashing I had a thought about preventing costly garden vandalism. Currently, those responsible will be dealt a wrist slapping at most. They know this which is why they perform such acts without fear of arrest. So why not pay the local street gang a small protection fee. Seriously, check it out.

The cops obviously can't protect us now, the citizens are mostly afraid of intervening or reporting what they see, so imagine what it will be like a few years in the down the decaying road! I envision the newly recruited criminal street gang wanna be's and prospects would be assigned to stand guard as part of their initiation process. They wil stand vigilant guard duty because they want into the gang and screwing up an assignment as a recruit means Very Bad Things Will Happen to Them. So the gardens will be protected.

Everyone will be happy! :) No vandalism, the gang picks up a few bucks or some free food, and whomever attempts such destruction gets.... uh.... 'dealt with very quickly'.

I think it's a great idea. Teach them the concept of "Don't **** where you eat" - literally. Explain to them that they community is more than their "turf". That's how it used to be before industrialization "civilized" us, we've just forgotten.
The whole of human history is a refutation by experiment of the concept of "moral world order". - Friedrich Nietzsche

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Ferretlover', '')$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('TheDude', 'A')ssuming these are just punk kids with nothing better to do it frankly would be sweet to see them get the living crap pummeled out of them by a mob
ending up as fertilizer for those gardens. OMG! Did I say that out loud??

Three vandals per hill of corn, squash and beans. Some may say that three is two too many, but there's no such thing as too much fertilizer as long as it's "natural".

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('PrestonSturges', '')$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('pstarr', 'T')hose sixteen garden plots contribute little (except discontent) to the city inhabitants. The aggregated garden can't be more than 2,500 sq. feet, just enough to feed one person. These people would do better to join a Maoist Revolutionary Cell and really work for change
You mean the GOP? Seriously, if there is one thing Maoists are good at, it's starving millions of people.

You should look up something called drought and then over population. NOTE: Millions starved in India under British rule as many thousands died in Ireland too.

Second you might want to review the historical context in which the communist (totalitarianism) revolution in China took place. I can assure you the were not sipping lattes, day trading and listening to iPods and woke up one day and decided to change all that and pick totalitarianism.

+1

Exactly right.

Just like those pirates of Somalia. One cobra gunship blasting the hell out of a few of their skiffs, and it would stop.

Just like if we defended the border with bullets.........illegal immigration would slow to a trickle.

Sometimes it's not vandals that do the damage.

Not at all! :-D

My mother told me, when she was young, there where no vandals or theft. And times where much much harder than nowadays.
Something is wrong.
To pay another gang would help this special community garden, but would certainly not help the community as such because it would allow for mafia structures.
There is another thing which is wrong: the neighbours, why didn't they act?

Portland has some neighborhoods that can be a bit scary. I think someone suggested the neighbors were afraid to call the police on the people who were vandalizing the gardens. If it was a gang doing the vandalzing, they might be people you don't want to mess with.....

As sure as I am sitting here, if the gangs are not stopped, you must as well move. First, it is the little stuff, then, they'll want more and more-your car, your house, your money, your life.
OH, TPTB will enact some kind of laws--which will only be taken seriously by the people that wouldn't intentionally break them in the first place--ie: more civil liberties terminated.

Orlov said that during the Soviet colapse many of these young kids turned to crime and ended up gunning each other down. This is similar to what Lithuanian friends told me after they declared independence.

I think the only thing to do until the nummbers thin out is to have a couple of guards on the place. This will probably mean rotating night shifts for the gardeners with the plots.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('pedalling_faster', '

i had about 3 feet by 3 feet dedicated to wheat, basically a seed crop.

someone ripped it out, very thoroughly, but left all the other plants in the ground.

This is the root of the issue. There is a huge element of society now (in all states, in most areas) that has essentially gone feral. I don't know all of the reasons. It's a "me first, I will get mine" attitude. There is no remorse, no feeling, no sense of decency. People find it fun to watch others suffer and to destroy what others have worked hard to achieve.

So now we come to a crossroads: we can either cower and let these punks take over, we can stand and fight them, or we can tuck tail and run. Neighbors have to find a way to stand up to this criminal element instead of cowering inside their houses, or it will just get worse.

Gangs are very active in my area also. Tags, fights, and recently a fatal shooting. There is trouble in the schools with rival gang members. Security had to be hired. These are the times we live in. Gangs now have a foothold in most areas of the country. So far, they mostly shoot other gang members, but what happens if TSHTF one day? Many of these gangs are very organized and powerful. They are involved in things we can't even imagine. The police have their gang task forces, but it's a hopeless battle. We could dedicate our entire police forces to gang activities and still not make much headway.

So going forward, these types of crimes will continue to grow. We have huge and growing numbers of "idle" youth with a complete lack of decency in this country, so things are going to get interesting.
