The original "Terminator" and the original "Star Wars" each represented a giant leap in movie-making methodology, and included story-lines that were far more interesting than what you usually see at the cinema these days.

I'm surprised no one mentioned Dune! Didn't they say "He who controls the spice controls the universe" or something to that effect? Very similar to a peak oil theme, just change "spice" to "oil" and "universe" to "world."

I have several favorites. I've never seen the SIFI movie that was even 10% as good as a good SIFI book, but here they are:

Zardoz > Let me die, damnit!
Logan's Run > God, Jessica was a nice piece of ____!
Barbarella > Duran Duran, let me break your sex machine!
Starship Troopers > "I'm just trying to kill some bugs sir!"
2001 A Space Odesy > "Dave, why don't you just sit down, take a stress pill and think about it?"
Solent Green > "Solent Green is Peo......ple...... ah......!"
Planet of the Apes > "Get your hands off me you damn dirty ape!"
Wildfire > Neat stainless steel visuals
Westword > draw!
Robinson Crusoe on Mars
Escape from New York > "What did I teach you?!" "You are the Duke of New York, A number one!" "Hey, I know you, Snake Pliskin, I heard you were dead!"
Cherry 2000 > Robots are more fun than real women!
Flash Gordon > Ming's daughter is nice!

And a lot more I can't remember. Note that I tend to stay away from the big ones. I like the cult stuff.

Ornella Muti. Total sex on a roll. That's the only movie I've ever seen her in. And the good news is she has a twin sister, Claudia. 8)

My favorite is the matrix trilogy, and I've seen almost every movie listed in this thread so far. I feel like most people I talk to don't understand the rich backstory the trilogy provides.

One of my favorites is also, "I Robot". I don't see why new movies aren't on anyone's list.

The new post on an new HIV strain reminded me of one truly awesome sci- fi flick: Jeff Goldblum's The Fly. I read an essay once suggesting that this movie was a metaphorical reference to the AIDS epidemic of the 80's. Evidently the freedom that gays felt in the 70's for the first time in modern history due to Stonewall and penicillin sent them off on an erotic adventure feeling like supermen. Then came the horrifying crash back down to reality. The movie's first half is unsurpassable sci-fi. Then it kind of lapses into a goofy horror flick

Galaxy Quest: Extremely funny, but has a very deep philosophical base that makes it a curiously touching film, as well.

Has to be "The Day The Earth Stood Still" hands down. An absolute classic with a message relevent for all times. Happens to be #5 on Martin Scorsese's all time list too, so I'm in good company.

Planet of the Apes
Blade Runner
Star Wars

All 3 of those are definately some of the best ever IMO. Honorable mentions would include, but not be limited to

12 Monkeys
Aliens series
Predator series

I recently watched Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence and just loved it. It no doubt got its influence from Blade Runner. Astounding animation, story line, dialogue, music, everything. I much prefer this one than the first (sorry Lowem). :P

Nice graphics, GITS2, but as for the story, well ... did they *have* to introduce the ghost dubbing thingy? And the deja vu's gave me headaches. They're practically begging you, come look at the graphics! No, really, look at it again!! And again!! And yet again!! You missed that part!! Again!!

Oh, and I'm back from the Chinese New Year holidays. 4 days without a decent 1.5 mbps Internet line. Now doing a helluva catching up.

Hee hee, yeah, the deja vus got me scratching my head too. Oshii really does tend to drill things to their absolute last point, doesn't he? Oh well, I still liked it. :-D

I'm going to put in my vote for 5 Million Years to Earth aka Quatermass and the Pit as the best SF film of all time.

A movie that came out around the same time as the Matrix with a similar theme: Thirteenth Floor. Released in 1999. A company produces a total immersion virtual world where you can visit the 1930's. People down there don't know that they are virtual people, etc. I liked this one even better that the Matrix. Another favorite of mine that could maybe perhaps sort of count for sci-fi is Being John Malkovitch. What a riot that was.

My wife and I consider ourselves aficionados of the Sci-Fi genre.
This is a list of our favorites. It excludes all the "well, duh"
choices, such as: Star Wars, Star Trek, Kubrick's work, Planet of
the Apes, or Close Encounters of the Third kind. Nor does it
include any of the more modern series classics like Mad Max,
X-Men, Terminator, Predator, Robocop, Tremors, Men in Black,
Jurassic Park, Starship Troopers, Alien, or Matrix.
These are all great.

We tend to enjoy more mainstream sci-fi. We have seen many
sci-fi b-movies and they just don't carry the weight that a good
studio film can offer.

Personal Favorites (we'll try to keep it short):
1- The Fifth Element
2- Event Horizon
3- The Quiet Earth
4- Twelve Monkeys
5- Screamers
6- 28 Days Later
7- BladeRunner
8- Soilder
9- Resident Evil
10- Pitch Black
11- Deep Blue Sea
12- The Langoliers
13- Ghosts of Mars
14- Reign of Fire
15- Total Recall
16- Mars Attacks
17- Independence Day
18- Logan's Run
19- Dark City
20- The Arrival
21- Time Bandits
22- SpaceTruckers
23- The Cube
24- No Escape
25- Stargate
26- I, Robot
27- Tank Girl
28- The Running Man
29- Alien Nation
30- Minority Report
31- Final Fantasy
32- Gattica
33- Signs
34- Evolution
35- Critters
36- Clockwork Orange
37- Escape from New York
38- Dune
39- The One
40- Waterworld
41- Millenium
42- Spaceballs
43- A boy and his Dog
44- Contact
45- The Thing
46- Altered States
47- The Day After
48- Cocoon
49- The Fly
50- Soylent Green

Most despised of the Genre:
Anything by Van Damme or Sylvester Stallone
:-D

I just watched 28 Days Later and it got me creaped out. Good movie but I kinda wish I hadn't watched it. I hope that the peak oil doomers are dead wrong. I am just not psychologically prepared for that sort of world.
