Good day from Pheba, from the farm:
Hubby and I watch a show called: "Market To Market" on public television. On last Friday's show a market pro predicted wheat going to 22.00 a bushel. Corn may top 8.00.

That forum was fascinating. It seems like those midwestern farmers have a really good handle on what is going on.

I think that we'll see a common loaf of bread hit $4, and if you want pepperidge farm, it's going to cost a fin at least.

Plan on spending more at the grocery store from now on.

Maybe it's time to bake bread again.

We have a bread conference coming up next summer. It was a huge success last summer. It could be timely:

http://www.heartofmaine.org/kneading/

It was a blast last summer. I took the Kiko Denzer clay oven workshop. What an amazing thing. Society exists to give you bread if you play their game. Well we can make our own ovens, grow our own wheat, mill it and make bread.

It really made me think about our priorities.

I talked with masons, millers, farmers and bakers, and had to sample the bread, hot from the oven, of course.

$20/bushel (60#) is $0.33/#. That half-ton of flour I bought 2 years ago @ $8.50 per 50# bag was one smart move!

The weather disaster in China and the spread of Ug99 wheat fungus combined with farmers sitting on their wheat waiting for offers of $30 means the WHEAT CRISIS is here, folks.

Wonder how long it 'll take the "Lame-stream Media" to go ballistic over this--so far, this might as well be happening on another planet.

I doubt that they will take notice until they can't buy bread in a store anymore. Sure they will complain about the price, but most of the people employed in the Media bizz will be able to afford it long after the rest of the dreck have shifted to other items like 'dirt'. As you have noted there is a major disconnect here...

Feel free to contribute to the thread 'nocar' started on the same subject. I'll add the link when I find it...

Feed grains will be about the cheapest, and just as a heads-up the bird seed they sell at Wal-mart, the wheat in that sprouts just fine.

I can get by pretty well on oats, can eat for $15 a month of oats at Safeway prices, if I add in foraging and small game (here kitty kitty) too. So the average mcConsumer has a far way to go.

The average person is not going to buy a bag of grain and grind it and make their own bread or tortillas. They just won't. It's not that it's hard, it's that it's different. They're not doing it over in Russia right now and they're dirt poor. The blow is psychological.

Me, I don't mind doing something like that. I've been poor, I've been through the 1970s. I'm pretty wierd and very flexible-minded. But most of the people in the US who are going to experience a hard time, that's coming, haven't experienced hunger at all before. The old farts have, but they're pretty much taken care of.

A Bu of wheat, that's a lot. Still if you needed a Bu of wheat to eat for a month, that's still just $20 a month (add in growing stuff, shooting/trapping small game, crawdad fishing etc.) to eat. The average person in the US is spending 10X that or more. Frankly in the Bay Area I started keeping track, and I had a hell of a time keeping my food down to $300 a month, I was never able to actually do it. I realized that's a hell of a lot of money and was planning to start "compartmentalizing" costs, in the same way that swapmeet selling was paying for my car, I'd go to the downtown area at noon and play a lil' music, once I had $10 in tips that'd be my food money. Not because I was that hard-up, but just based on the principle of the thing....

Yep, I just paid $2.69 CDN for a loaf of Wonderbread(ya, I know, I'm nuts paying that price, and doubly nuts for eating that crap~I've got kids :D )
I remember when I was a kid, I rode back on my bike from a store with a 22 cent loaf of bread(my mom gave me the 22 cents for it). On the way back the loaf fell off the carrier on the back of the bike... I didn't notice till I got home...my mom almost beat the tar out of me for wasting 22 cents...how times and prices have changed.

All this talk has got me thinking. Maybe it's time to pick up a few 25 lb bags of wheat. How long does it keep? I think we'll put them in the cool plastic containers we bought for the occasion. We will have some maple syrup soon to go with all that wheat. It looks like we may be really needing the syrup to make the beans and pancakes go down.

Here's King Arthur's site. Is this a good deal for 25 lbs?

Hey, we have a feral cat problem here, everyplace in the US does. We're rural enough to have some dogs running around that would better "serve man" by being on the barbecue too. I'm looking at carrying heat with 3 rounds of "snake shot" and 3 rounds of cor-bons for a couple of the dogs up the way here, when riding my motorcycle, but I think they'll get fenced in before I have to do anything, since there's an ex-cop who rides his quad up and down here when the weather's warm too.

I want to point out that while wheat is the main ingredient of bread, it does not make up the whole price. There is probably 1LB of wheat in a loaf of bread. Say a loaf cost $2, the wheat portion used to be say .18 cents. If wheat doubles, the wheat in a loaf of bread will then cost .18 cents more so a loaf "should" cost $2.18.

Now, as we all understand, when the price of oil doubles, all prices rise.

Mainstream media?? The only one discussing rising ag prices in detail is the U.S. Farm Report, and I have to set my DVR for 5 AM on Sunday just to watch it.

Some more interesting farmer comments on the wheat situation ( after some forum flaming--scroll about halfway down, notice the PO comments on the next page).
