Where do you fit into the 7 billion people on Earth?

Where do you fit into the 7 billion people on Earth? thumbnail

Have you ever found yourself wondering how many people there are on Earth? Or perhaps you are curious as to what your birth date may signify in the grand scheme of things. Or are you a teacher in search of a new learning tool to share with your students?

Well, thankfully there is a great interactive site that is sure to become a favorite among curious minds, students and teachers alike.

Worldpopulationhistory.org is an educational site that allows visitors to explore Earth’s population through social, political, historical and environmental perspectives. The site follows the 2,000-year-long journey of human civilization and it details the potential paths leading toward the middle of the 21st century.

On the homepage, visitors can view a world map featuring various dots. Once you click on a dot, you can learn about the different population groups in that particular geographic area. You can then choose different years and see how the population in that area has changed over the years.

World Population project

The World Population project began as a simple animated video of dots on a map, which represented the various population changes over time. The video was first produced by Population Connection over 40 years ago and it quickly became a popular teaching resource. New editions of the video have been released since the project’s first conception and the most recent version can be viewed here.

Worldpopulationhistory.org is an excellent learning tool for high school students studying world history, geography and environmental science. The site is a wonderful tool for teachers as it also features six downloadable science and social studies lesson plans. The lesson plans cover current national standards and they provide content for several different Advanced Placement courses.

Students can explore the site and then put their knowledge to the test with the world population quiz and they can also find their population number based on their birthday. The site also features several “share” buttons, allowing site visitors to share their findings on Facebook and other social media platforms.

    Nonsense neder, even at 7Bil without modernism the amount of agriculture and domesticated animals needed to support such a large population of a high order predator mammal is unnatural. At this population all productive niches are occupied by a narrow range of species. Too many beneficial micro ecosystems have been destroyed to facilitate human agriculture. Our populations need to be 1BIL or bellow. Even a population like the 30’s at around 2BIL is maybe doable with the right type of civilization. A civilization that attempts to support nature by finding a proper position in the web of life is essential for populations above 500MIL. We are at the other extreme with modernism and with 7 times too many people. We are the worst of both worlds.

The average life expectancy of a new EV battery at about five (Tesla) to eight years. Or about 1500 cycles (assuming daily partial recharge, which prolongs the life of the battery) before reaching 80% of its capacity rating.

    Battery performance and lifespan begins to suffer as soon as the temperature climbs above 86 degrees Fahrenheit. A temperature above 86 degrees F affects the battery pack performance instantly and often permanently.

    It is also became almost inoperative at below freezing point temperatures. For example it can’t be charged.

    So they need to be cooled at summer and heated at winter. Storing such a car on the street is out of question. You need a garage. And only 1/3 of Americans have garages..

    And large auto battery typically starts deteriorating after three years of daily use or 800 daily cycles. Regular gas, and , especially, diesel cars can last 20 years, and larger trucks can last 30 years.

    In a way EVs can be called “subprime cars.” Or “California cars”, if you wish (California climate is perfect for this type of cars)
    Switching to motorcycles for personal transportation can probably help more in oil economy aria then EVs.

    Can you say the same? 1/3 of US oil is imported. 1/3 of your economy is dependent on that import. When the SHTF, those wells will close down. Those nuke plants will also shut down.

    At least we have zero nukes to be concerned about when the SHTF. You have ~100 and most are ancient. Most way past their design life time. Besides the fact that I will not miss electric as much as you will.

    We designed our new home to be non-electric. Gravity feed water supply, Plenty of windows for light and air. The windows are tempered glass for typhoons. The house is concrete, steel and masonry. No wood. Etc. We built to last unlike the stick and cardboard houses in the Us.

    Palm oil is a very inefficient way to power a generator much like soy oil. Billy we are not talking a P’s/US comparison here we are talking your grid resilience which is lower than anyone here being driven by a diesel generator that will require relatively more maintenance and spare parts plus you are in super typhoon alley.

    Billy, you have been talking about this fantasy house on your fantasy farm now since I came here which was around I think 2013 on the comment section. I have been here since the begging and before on the Energy Bulletin and Oil Drum. Your fantasy house is like those places I used to see in the Bahamas that never get built. The Bahamians have issues with getting bank loans so they start houses when they have time and money. Eventually one runs out and what you have is partially built houses everywhere. I imagine that is what you have billy. A construction in progress that will never get built at least in your short lifetime left.

    The farmhouse is under construction. It is past the halfway point. The custom windows and doors are being made locally to accommodate our design. The total cost is less than $1,000US including screens and grills. The same would cost 10 to 15 times that in the US, off the shelf.

    You rely on US propaganda for your view of the outside world. That’s like asking the used car dealer who the previous owner was, it is always a little old lady who only drove it slowly to church on Sunday, or similar, when it was really a teenager who drag raced it on weekends.     Every year since 1984 oil consumption has exceeded oil discovery.

    In 2017 oil discoveries were about 7 billion barrels; consumption was about 35 billion barrels

    Of the world’s 20 largest oil fields, 18 were discovered 1917-1968; 2 in the 1970’s; 0 since.
