Where do you fit into the 7 billion people on Earth?

Where do you fit into the 7 billion people on Earth? thumbnail

Have you ever found yourself wondering how many people there are on Earth? Or perhaps you are curious as to what your birth date may signify in the grand scheme of things. Or are you a teacher in search of a new learning tool to share with your students?

Well, thankfully there is a great interactive site that is sure to become a favorite among curious minds, students and teachers alike.

Worldpopulationhistory.org is an educational site that allows visitors to explore Earth’s population through social, political, historical and environmental perspectives. The site follows the 2,000-year-long journey of human civilization and it details the potential paths leading toward the middle of the 21st century.

On the homepage, visitors can view a world map featuring various dots. Once you click on a dot, you can learn about the different population groups in that particular geographic area. You can then choose different years and see how the population in that area has changed over the years.

World Population project

The World Population project began as a simple animated video of dots on a map, which represented the various population changes over time. The video was first produced by Population Connection over 40 years ago and it quickly became a popular teaching resource. New editions of the video have been released since the project’s first conception and the most recent version can be viewed here.

Worldpopulationhistory.org is an excellent learning tool for high school students studying world history, geography and environmental science. The site is a wonderful tool for teachers as it also features six downloadable science and social studies lesson plans. The lesson plans cover current national standards and they provide content for several different Advanced Placement courses.

Students can explore the site and then put their knowledge to the test with the world population quiz and they can also find their population number based on their birthday. The site also features several “share” buttons, allowing site visitors to share their findings on Facebook and other social media platforms.

    The Spoiled Brat nation is in decline.  In a new document, “Providing for the Common Defense:  The Assessments and Recommendations of the National Defense Strategy Commission” (available at https://www.usip.org/sites/default/files/2018-11/providing-for-the-common-defense.pdf), the Congressional authors state that “[t]he United States confronts a grave crisis of national security and national defense.”  Some significant statements excerpted from the document:

    – “[B]ecause of foreign and domestic factors, America’s longstanding military advantages have diminished.”
    – The previously often forewarned crisis of military decline “has now arrived, with potentially dire effects not just for U.S. global influence, but also for the security and welfare of America itself.”
    – “Put bluntly, the American people and their elected representatives must understand that U.S. military superiority is not guaranteed, that many global trends are adverse and threatening, and that the nation has reached a pivotal moment regarding its ability to defend its vital interests and preserve a world in which the United States and other like-minded nations can thrive.”  (Good luck on achieving such understanding!)
    – “Unfortunately, in recent years changes at home and abroad have eroded American military advantages and [are] threatening U.S. interests.”
    – “The challenge China presents is particularly daunting.”
    – “Russia, too, is pursuing regional hegemony and global influence in destabilizing ways.”
    – “[C]ompounding these [and many other] challenges, the proliferation of advanced technology is eroding U.S. advantages and creating new vulnerabilities.  … In some cases, we are behind, or falling behind, in critical technologies.  U.S. competitors are making enormous investments in hypersonic delivery vehicles, artificial intelligence (AI), and other advanced technologies.  With respect to hypersonics in particular, the United States finds itself trailing China and perhaps Russia as well.”
    – “The dangers posed by these and other troubling trends have been compounded by a final problem, of America’s own making:  budgetary instability and disinvestment in defense.”
    – “If the United States had to fight Russia in a Baltic contingency or China in a war over Taiwan (see Vignette 1), Americans could face a decisive military defeat. … Put bluntly, the U.S. military could lose the next state-versus-state war it fights.”

    Of intense interest are the five vignettes (involving Taiwan, North Korea, Russia, the South China Sea, and Russian cyber attacks) imagining possible military/economic chaos which could bring America and its “friends” into grave danger, even to its knees.

    The report next proceeds to give a long list of needs and recommendations which — however or to whatever extent implemented — would cost vast amounts of money.  (Think doubling the current national debt of $21 T.)

    So let us look, now, at the real world.

    The Congress as currently constituted has no intention of redirecting its money from supporting the masses who demand medical miracles up to immortality, let alone parasites of all types, especially the tsunamis of primtive aliens from ThirdWorld outhouse countries.  The idea that resources might be taken from bloodsucking low-IQs and whining snowflakes and given to people involved with weapons and national defense is simply not part of the bribeocracy’s mindset.  And anyway, any and all possible threats are due to President Trump, so once the Democrats and RINOs remove him from power, all will be sweetness and light.

    So the National Defense Strategy Commission made a good try.  But we can now file its report in dusty D.C. archives somewhere and go back to business as usual.  Virtue signalling will save us from the things that go bump in the night.

    Taiwan, North Korea, Russia, the South China Sea are no threat to America if it keeps its nose out of their business. It is up to their neighbors to get along with them.

    As for the US’ lack of military ability. just look at the graft and corruption from the US Congress all the way down to the smallest company selling parts to the MIC. The US military budget is multiples of the next biggest country’s and has been for decades. America is 3rd world.

    This article is somewhat dated but the math is not. I feel our late term civilization can tick on for some more years than I did when I first came here to PO dot com around 2013. Then I saw doom more immediate because of oil, economics, and climate issues all converging rapidly into a systematic bifurcation. Civilization is more resilient than I anticipated mainly because of knowledge and technology. That knowledge has brough an awakening to our predicament and technology is offering us tools to mitigate and adapt. Yet, unless we rapidly reduce population over the next few decades knowledge and technology will not save a dying planet. In fact the planet cannot be salvaged but the destruction can be reduced and a new living arrangement built to live within the negative changes humans have caused.

    I do not see much hope from the top down but who knows possibly in crisis there will be change. Currently the world is not getting along enough at the top. The awakening is not broad based enough. There are very few truly awakened individuals. Not enough people that matter really believe there is a problem. The vast majority of people on the earth are not capably of knowing. Those too young, uneducated, mentally handicapped, and selfish people who don’t care mean maybe 10% can awaken. Of that 10% maybe half that will. Nature will drive this die down though the web of life. The planets cycles will make habitable climate more difficult. Ample resources for a technological society will run down too low to support it eventually. Even resources for a non-technological society have been reduced to the point that planetary cycles will not reproduce them again for thousands of years at a level that can support more than 1BIL. The damage has been done for our immediate situation. This likely means no matter if technology succeeds in a transition from carbon and pollution issue we still are running out of time as a civilization.

    Population is the primary variable for finding a new planetary arrangement of humans. This article points to a reduction needed in population of 6BIL over a generation. It will require on average that deaths over births need to be 200MIL a year. This is a mindboggling number. Especially the fact this needs to happen for decades. This is also an average so at times this number could be more. This type of degrowth points to a drastically different status quo. We have lived with population growth and economic growth. This creates a particular culture. Now that will change. Not only will we have more deaths like the 19th century and before we will also have declining population. It is unclear if technological man can maintain itself in such a circumstance. If it happens slow enough maybe.

    My view is nature will force this on modern man. Modern man has the option of taking the initiative but will likely not until a crisis. We cannot continue at a population of 7BIL with the predicaments we are in. This may not happen for a decade or two so I feel we still have time to adjust but the adjustment is not to a happy ending for what we have. The adjustment is for the rollercoaster down with population and affluence.

    As always I tell people you can begin this process personally. Your immediate family, groups, and small community can become in tune to what is ahead. This is a natural process now because it is planetary. It is nonnegotiable. Of course I don’t know the details but I have read enough science to see the picture at a distance. I have been researching decline of our late term civilization now for so many years I have touched on all the aspects. I am not an expert on any one but I have explored them all. This is my academic activity. My personal life is preparatory for what is coming. It is a spirituality of the planetary awakening. It is about preaching a new way of life that is a hybrid of the new and old. It is about relative sacrifice in declining affluence that calls for the wisdom of collapsing in place into localism, seasonality, and intermittency. It is about a new wisdom that seeks to use the status quo to leave it. Most of all it is an orientation of the mind to nature. If you align yourself with nature, the web of life, and planetary cycles then you will not go wrong. Say this because after all this is the way.
