A COMPUTER MODEL developed in 1973 by a team of MIT researchers has predicted the “end of civilised life as we know it” by 2040, with a major change coming in 2020 – just two years away from now.
An apocalyptic computer model, processed by one of the world’s largest computers in 1973, has predicted the end of civilization by 2040.
The prediction came from a programme nicknamed World One, which was developed by a team of MIT researchers and processed by Australia’s largest computer.
It was originally devised by computer pioneer Jay Forrester, after he was tasked by the Club of Rome to develop a model of global sustainability.
However, the shocking result of the computer calculations showed that the level of pollution and population would cause a global collapse by 2040.
This shows that the world cannot sustain the current level of population and industrial growth for more than two decades.
Australian broadcaster ABC has republished its original report from the 1970s, since there is just two years until a major change is expected according to the computer model.
The model based its predictions on trends such as pollution levels, population growth, availability of natural resources and quality of life on earth.
The eerie calculation has been remarkably accurate in certain predictions, such as a stagnated quality of life and diminishing pool of natural resources.

A fascinating forecast shows that the quality of life is expected to drop dramatically right after 2020.
At this time the broadcasters addreses the audience: “At around 2020, the condition of the planet becomes highly critical.

Back in the old days here on this forum we used to talk about collapse issues and personal action. Back when peak oil and central bank financial activity pointed to a collapse. Today it is troll baiting and extremism. We have off topic nonsense and anti-Americanism in all shapes and sizes. We have individuals that flood the pages with their personal emotional agendas daily and trolls that enable and support it. Too bad because collapse strategies are very important and relevant to peak oil. These strategies are being drowned out by low standard intellectual material. Cornucopian techno optimism is part of this debate but the emotional agenda nonsense is not.
Peak oil has not gone away. Depletion does not sleep. The unsustainability of systematic complexity and population overshoot and overshoot of consumption are very real and their effects are converging with positive reinforcement. Planetary degradation of systems and the web of life is proceeding as an extinction event unparalleled in history. It is just our human die down has not started yet so we ignore the signs. These issues have been arrested temporarily and this has been something collapseniks have failed to understand and accept. Peakers got their ass kicked but only temporarily.
I agree on collapsing in place. How that is done is highly variable though. I have done the complete gambit of prepping. I am an academic doomer meaning I study and comment on collapse daily. I have been doing this since 2000. I am no less a doomer but I have matured in the study and expression of collapse. I no longer agree quick collapse is necessarily imminent even though it could be. It is now my point that our status quo of a global modernism can drag on for years at least until it falls off the Seneca cliff. We have brittle resilience which means globalism is tough as nails as long as all cylinders are firing. When we have a little engine trouble it could get very nasty quick. This almost happened with the 08 financial crisis and has threatened to get bad several times since but hasn’t. We have the Levant that has had the possibility of a great power war and it didn’t. We have Iran issues now threatening.
We are definitely in a collapse process that is systematic. This process is environmental, social, and energy related. It is cumulative and building. It is not necessarily imminent. Earth processes are not fully understood and play out over decades but are clearly in flux. Our global system is experiencing growth and decline at the same time but this appears to be an undulating plateau currently. Renewables that are hyped as our salvation are not going to save us but they will assist in mitigating the collapse process. How much will renewables help us is an open question both technical and behavioral. We have technology that is the problem and the solution making thing worse and better. We have social disintegration but there is also the connectivity of the web where proper wisdom is connecting and this wisdom offers the opportunity for real and proper action to be discovered. This wisdom may never change the top but it does off the individual and small group the opportunity to change and adapt. It offers meaning at a time of non-meaning and the drift of intellectual relativity. These aspects of the collapse process are combining and mixing such as we can’t see a clear direction to where we are going. Yet, the gradient should be clear. We are living beyond our means on a finite planet.
For the individual who does not have the opportunity for change what does this mean? It means you still can adapt and mitigate. Attitudes are a big part of the change. You may not be able to move from where you are or quit work but you can change your life to find meaning in what is coming. Those who can change should. They should move to a place that offers better sanctuary in times of trouble. Those who can change should live differently and treat the environment they live in differently. Learn to grow food and live a simple stoic life because we are heading to less affluence. The sooner you learn to live with less the sooner you are truly prepared for what is coming. We will have less of everything once this global system produces less and the 80MIL new humans keep getting added to the population every year. That cannot end well and won’t. Collapse in place with dignity. The dignity is from embracing the true wisdom of seeing right from wrong. The spirituality of being authentic in the humility of acknowledgement of this process is the real meaning. You can feel empowered by the truth. We are a late term civilization and there is a proper way to live in a late term civilization. Nature is clearly the dispenser of wisdom. Look around at what your natural environment is telling you and that should be enough of a warning and a motivator.

Mm, yesterday I split a rank of wood. By winter little by little I will have heat and forage for the animals. Yesterday I pressed grapes for juice. What is less simpleton is everyday that the sun shines good I gather solar energy from my panels. Yesterday I accumulated 8kw by running my a/c. I burned wood to make hot water for my shower. My point to all this is it is the simple efforts at energy gathering that need to be embraced by everyone. At least those who can should work at it. My animals are another energy gathering source. Those who can’t do what I do then should maybe conserve energy by not driving so much or skip red meat for a week. In the coming decline from affluence these low energy activities will become more valuable. Propane is cheaper than wood when you consider time/labor value. I can buy hay off a big producer cheaper than I can make it. Grid power is cheaper than my solar setup considering equipment cost. What I am doing is trying to be more resilient and sustainable because that has value. Call me what you like but it feels good and is rewarding. What are you doing?

Davy, that sounds like an excellent life, one that many here would no doubt like to emulate. It is interesting to hear about it; you will definitely be in a better position than most when things get really bad.
Personally, I live in a town house in the north of England that does not have a big enough back yard to grow more than a few potted plants. It is five storeys high, with the roof nearly 50 feet above the ground. Installing anything at that height requires scaffolding. Lots of inside space, but not much outside space. My father in law has an allotment that I occasionally help with, but it couldn’t provide more than a small fraction of what we eat. I also own a cottage that I am trying to renovate into a holiday let. But that doesn’t have a lot of outside space either.
My ambition is to move to a small holding in the next couple of years. The problem is that even in the north of England; a small holding with a couple of acres will set me back about £550,000, which is about $800,000. I could stretch to it, but in the current climate, it really doesn’t seem wise to take on more debt. I am free from debt at present as my mortgage is paid off, which seems like a good place to be. I live 5 miles from where I work so can walk if I need to. But the weather in northern England is frequently wet.

Yeah right 🙂 I have a feeling that US crime statistics and prison population wouldn’t do a good job of supporting that opinion. But it isn’t really central to my point.
But my point is that people that can’t afford food aren’t very likely to drive a hundred miles into the countryside to rob a farm. They are more likely to rob the stores or kill each other. The idea of a road warrior future just isn’t realistic.

I consider myself blessed to be able to live this lifestyle but I would add it is difficult and uncomfortable. I spend time in the heat, cold, and wet. I am around animal shit with bugs and nasty plants that get you with stickers. Much of the chores I do are redundant and boring. It is after a hard days work or many days work that the enjoyment is realized. It is the cumulative accomplishments that satisfy. Sometimes the weather is nice and sometimes everything works and other times I wonder how I do it. It is by no means something everyone would want to do but those who like being close to the land it is a life that is rewarding.

Depending on how life unwinds into a collapse it may be a good place to be in the respect that I have planned for this and the land will provide. If things get very bad I will not last much longer than others. There is always the case of what I have being taken. We have discussed the scenarios of collapse often on this board. I personally believe multiple possibilities exist so defaulting to the worst case scenario is a bad idea just as thinking you got it made because you are prepped. I will be in a great position if a collapse situation does not get too bad. It goes downhill from there.

I have traveled several times to the north of England in the 90’s and find the country wonderful. The fact that you have no debt and live close to work is a positive. Sounds like you have a good life so I would enjoy it to the fullest while you can. With all the resilience and sustainability I have built in to my life with great cost and hard work I am not sure how far it will go anyway. Without reasonable resupply I am screwed. I can do what I do because of resources that won’t be here in a hard collapse. I will definitely be in good shape for the first month or two but after that who knows.

Its not just the people from the cities you would have to worry about..The majority of people who live in the country aren’t farmers either..and they will need food just as bad? the last place the trucks will stop coming to is the cities and the first place will be the rural towns..i think you have it backwards..I see the rural areas and people having to migrate to the cities or they won’t eat..

Yea, and a tree might fall on me later today. If times get apocalyptic then there may be little hope with a high possibility of death violent or slow. In the event it is a slow collapse I will do well for many months. During this time I will be able to plan, adapt and prepare for a new life or possibly, death.
