Here are nine of the safest places in the world to survive a third world war

Here are nine of the safest places in the world to survive a third world war thumbnail

WE live in dangerous times, and the threat of global annihilation is always lurking just around the corner.

Nuclear war is always a lingering threat, and recent escalations over Syria risk reviving Cold War tensions between hostile nuclear powers.

When the end times come, where are the best places to hole up away from it all?

When the end times come, where are the best places to hole up away from it all?

But what if we told you that there are some safe havens where you’d stand a good chance of surviving the end of the world?

From the frozen deserts of Iceland to the built-up city of Cape Town, these places are all ideal for surviving an apocalypse scenario.

Better get booking those flights before it’s too late, because these are the nine best places to be when it all goes Pete Tong for humanity.

Iceland

As Insider reports, Iceland is hundreds of miles away from any other land, so it shouldn’t be a target in a World War 3 scenario.

What’s more, it’s a great spot for fishing, so survivors would have an abundant food supply to keep them going until the world is rebuilt.

Iceland is a safe and beautiful country, which could be a lifesaver in the event of WW3

Isle of Lewis

This Scottish island is self sufficient and situated three hours away from the mainland.

Simply put, it’s a nice enough place to live without attracting any attention to yourself.

Antarctica

It may be a bit nippy, but in a worst-case scenario, you’d probably be safe if you managed to carve out a life in the continent’s barren wastes.

Another frozen destination, the continent's tough climate means it's hard to survive there but also not a target

Kansas City

In the event of a non-nuclear war, this is the place to be. The city is surrounded by fertile farmland, and is the ideal spot to defend against attackers.

Yukon

One of Canada’s most remote regions, the Yukon province is well off the grid.

To make matters even better, it’s a mineral-rich area which is jam packed with wildlife, meaning you could get rich and eat well whilst waiting for the apocalypse to blow over.

Cape Town

South Africa’s wealthiest city, Cape Town could be a good place to hide out in comfort.

Since the African nation keeps itself relatively clear of Western influences, there’s a good chance that Cape Town will be so far out of the way that World War 3 won’t even reach it.

Cape Town may be so far away from the action that it's one of the safest places to be when war breaks out

Guam

An easily-defendible island with a strong military presence, Guam is a wise place to hole up if you want to survive a worldwide conflict.

Bern

Switzerland simply doesn’t take sides, preferring to remain neutral throughout every major conflict.

And Bern, the Swiss capital, is easily-defensible to boot, not that war is likely to come to Switzerland.

The Swiss capital is probably a good bet, since the country has a long tradition of neutrality

Tristan da Cunha

This collection of islands is one of the remotest places on Earth, and is a top fishing spot.

We can think of far worse places to spend the end of the world than on a stunning island paradise in the middle of nowhere.

Putin offers 2.5 acres of FREE land in Russia’s Far East.

The excitement came after it was revealed that President Putin is offering 2.5 acres of land for free to people willing to move to the country’s Siberian wilderness in a bid to boost the area’s economy.

As part of the deal, successful applicants would receive Russian citizenship and be able to sell, rent or give away the land only after five years.

Treated by some as a propaganda move, the fact is that this offer is being made to everyone – Russians and non-Russians.

It is unlike that the Far East is going to be hit by nukes if WW3 breaks out.

One of the worst places to be in the coming chaos will be Gibraltar:

    http://www.express.co.uk/news/world/721295/Gibraltar-Spain-Argentina-help-claim-joint-sovereignty-Rock

UK PM May promised that article 50, requesting the departure of Britain from the EU, will be initiated by end of March 2017 at the latest.

The European goodwill towards Britain will be minimal and the EU is already signaling that the Brexit will be hard.

    http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/hard-brexit-no-latest-soft-eu-referendum-donald-tusk-theresa-may-britain-a7360406.html

Expect that the UK will lose Scotland to Europe:

    https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2016/oct/15/nicola-sturgeon-vows-to-hold-second-scottish-vote-in-event-of-hard-brexit

Furthermore Germany is pushing for a European army, bypassing NATO, a move Britain always has blocked:

    https://www.rt.com/op-edge/361832-eu-army-nato-germany/

Britain has always blocks the move, because it wants the US to be on top of the world, Europeans however have different ideas and so do the Russians and Chinese, who are all preparing for a Eurasian century:

    http://journal-neo.org/2016/10/04/the-eurasian-century-is-now-unstoppable-2/

It won’t be long until Spain will finally make its long anticipated move and retake Gibraltar, one of the most strategic locations in the world, on par with the Suez Canal and Bosporus. Expect the EU to back the move.

The purpose of the coming WW3 will be the swapping of Britain and the US East Coast for Russia and the US Mid West, from a continental European perspective. Or as the Chinese put it, the “de-Americanization of the world”.

    http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-china-37241315

To make a log story short, remove Gibraltar from your residence survival list. It sucks.

Northern hemisphere is toast, with or without nuclear exchange, near term, period.

Southern hemisphere might have some places
    to “survive” …

…until radiation and fall-out (nuclear power plant meltdowns) reach those places as well… and climate chaos will wreak havoc there, too.

Humankind checkmated itself with the development and utilization of nuclear power
    AND oil.

Of all the places mentioned only the Arctic seems reasonably safe.

Stock up – Download a few 1000 movies and books – move there – dig down – move back in 20 years. Oh and dont forget the bicycle generator for reading books and watching movies. 😀

  8. Cloggie on Sat, 15th Oct 2016 6:47 pm

During the end seventies NATO decided to station Pershing and Cruise missiles in Europe in response to Soviet deployment of SS-20 missiles in Eastern Europe. The situation was very tense as I vividly remember and as a result a British couple decided to setup shop in the Falkland Island and survive WW3 on the Southern Hemisphere.

In 1982 Argentina occupied the Falkland Islands and branded them the Malvinas.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Falklands_War

Thatcher Britain decided that this move couldn’t remain unanswered and organized a so-called task force.

It was a close call. Mainly thanks to diplomacy, notably by US secretary of state Alexander Haig, it could be prevented that Argentina would acquire more French Exocet missiles and thus decide the war to its own advantage. The Falklands War showed a glimpse of how WW3 will look like: a missile war, where useless navies play the role of sitting ducks.

Morale: don’t be too sure about what exactly is going to happen. You’ll be the first to know when your time is up.

This article is a late April Fool joke?

There will be NO place on the planet that will not get fallout. That guarantees cancer for anyone who survives the bombs, and no meds to treat them.

I especially laughed at Guam. There will be nothing left of that island but radioactive glass. It is in range of China’s nukes and would be one of it’s first targets because of the large US base there.

You can run, but you cannot hide. Duck and Cover! LMAO

Currently looking out the window this Sunday morning and watching the rain from Typhoon Sarika as it moves over northern Luzon. It was supposedly a Cat.3 when its eye hit land about 30 miles north of our farm. Lots of rain and wind but nothing serious there. 250 feet above sea level and 5 miles inland from the Pacific. Good thing that it is Sunday here and most of the people will be at home.

Typhoon Haima is already building down near Guam and is currently tracking to go north of the Ps in a week or so. Guam safe from WW3? If the bombs don’t get you, the typhoons will.

“Trumps mouth has no filter. He has lost many die hard voters. A woman beat him. He lost already. Get over it”

ROFL. Moron, trump may have a big mouth, but your ISIS-loving PNAC spokesthing, Killary, isn’t ‘beating’ him at anything. The deep-state is going all out to discredit him. That dried up old hag, Killary, doesn’t have the IQ, or resources to do much except read from her prepared speeches. Which at this point, mainly consist of anti-trump, anti-Russia, and pro-war tirades and little else, except when she is reminding everyone how warm and wonderful she is. That you treat everything that falls out of her gaping hole as gospel, is hardly surprising.

Killary is in many ways, a lot like you boat. She has the charisma and warmth of a turnip, along with an IQ to match.

Maybe you should tell us how President Putin is getting beat by a ‘woman’ again?

    Idiot.

I just read that Trump wants a drug test for both of them before the next debate. That old hag couldn’t pass one if she tried. She is so full of pills to keep her alive and semi-sane that they would show up in any test honestly performed. Go for it Trump!

Ghung – “Anyway, I’m wondering why this silly article was even posted.”. Especially in the rather long list of bad sh*t actually happening to mankind nuke war is far from the top IMHO.

Do you really think you can run from the Radiation Fallout that will occur World Wide?

  27. Dan on Sun, 16th Oct 2016 1:15 am

While there may be some places where you can survive a nuclear war in the short term whether or not ANYONE survives long term will depend on the scale of said exchange.

Even a minor exchange of say only 100 warheads could cost the lives of tens of
millions due to starvation as crops fail.

A major exchange would result in the death of some 99% of humanity within a year and most of the remaining 1% within a decade as
the climactic change brought about kills virtually ALL plant and animal life including much of the photoplankton that drives the food chain of the ocean.

You’d have to store at least a decades worth or perhaps even two decades worth of food for everyone in your group to have a reasonable chance of surviving till you could grow crops again. And that doesn’t cover all the other things that can go wrong.

No…..while some people may survive the war virtually NOBODY will survive the results of
    a significantly sized nuclear war.

  28. Don Rechtman on Sun, 16th Oct 2016 1:17 am

As any nuclear holocaust will likely be limited to the northern hemisphere, equatorial trade winds will likely restrict the bulk of the radiation to the north. This suggests the southern half is the place to be. If nothing else, it would buy two or three days’ time to decide if the damage is severe enough to pull the plug on oneself.
I thought of this years ago when Reagan had the potential of starting such a war. I told a friend about this, and he told me this story: during WWII, someone wanted to determine the safest and most conflict-free place to be in Europe, and he settled in accordingly. Unfortunately, his choice happened to be Normandy Beach!
    You can’t always second-guess outcomes of war-crazy nations…

  29. MB on Sun, 16th Oct 2016 1:20 am

The Yukon is actually not such a great place in the event of a nuclear war. Fairbanks, AK houses a Striker Army Base of first response troops. It also houses a squadron of first response fighters. Anchorage has same capabilities but a nuke strike on Anchorage will likely have radiation drift over into B.C. The strike on Fairbanks bases will envelope Yukon. Check your map before posting erroneous safe zone destinations.

  30. Jim S. on Sun, 16th Oct 2016 1:29 am

Guam will be toast due to the military. KC is prime target for a nuclear caused EMP due to be in the middle of the country and large military presence in the surrounding states (i.e.- Colorado, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Nebraska (SAC)). Cape Town and Tristan Da Cunha may survive a little longer until the fallout hits them, even Antarctica will get it eventually. Outer Space may be the only place as the atmosphere will hold it in.

  31. Gina on Sun, 16th Oct 2016 1:30 am

3rd World War??? World War III already started a while ago. It’s the Western World vs ISIS. I knew that but bet you all didn’t know it’s been going on for a long time now.

  34. JW Cruz on Sun, 16th Oct 2016 1:48 am

Yep, Guam is the place to be in during a world conflict. There are more than enough Brown Tree Snakes on this island to feed the hungry, should the war breaks out.

  35. Roger on Sun, 16th Oct 2016 1:52 am

This list has some good choices, but hardly uses a scientific approach. You will be quite safe from fallout if you are more than 200-300 miles from targeted areas, with a bit more distance east (downwind in prevailing winds). Almost no fallout would happen south of the equator for the first two weeks, and by that time all the short lived isotopes (most dangerous) are gone. Despite claims of untrained people who watched too many atomic spider movies, even a full out war is hardly the end of mankind. It is just the end of a lot of economic and human activity in the targeted nations. Antarctica is no good because it needs regular deliveries of food and fuel for simple survival. Kansas City is a possible target due to nearby industry and ICBM launch sites. Small towns on the Oregon coast should be good, as fallout has to cross the Pacific to get there. If the blast misses you, hide out in your basement for a couple weeks, and keep the windows shut. If your nation was hit, you may have a long struggle for food and water with millions of others, and all industry stopped. Not fun.

  36. DJS on Sun, 16th Oct 2016 2:02 am

I live and work within a couple miles of a major military base so I won’t have to worry about survival. If a nuke war comes my part in it will be over before I know it.

  37. Gary on Sun, 16th Oct 2016 2:08 am

India could be a choice too. Life there is so bad that it can’t get any worse in a world war. Your daily life experience in a few months could prepare you for survival anywhere a world war was on.

  38. Ricardo del Rosario on Sun, 16th Oct 2016 2:14 am

It’s not safe anymore because you have told the secret place to everybody and the bombers will follow it and they will be there in a minute.

  39. Bill on Sun, 16th Oct 2016 2:20 am

As someone who works for the military, Guam has a great big target on it because of it’s huge military presence. That would NOT be the place to be.

  40. makati1 on Sun, 16th Oct 2016 2:21 am

Rodger, you are dreaming, of course. Fallout? Take a look at this site of the current wind patterns of the world.

    https://earth.nullschool.net/

Do you notice how many places the wind currents cross the equator at sea level? Now look at them higher up. It may appear that all of the winds are blowing north across the equator, but keep in mind that they have to blow equally south across the equator or the southern hemisphere would be a vacuum. They just do it higher up where all of that nuclear blasted materials are going to be.

There is no place safe, just that it might take a few more weeks to reach the most distant point on the globe. Death by vaporization or by cancers. That is the only difference.

THERE IS NO PLACE “SAFE” IN CASE OF A NUCLEAR WAR, The radioactive rains and ashes covering the entire planet during at least 2 years will produce darkness that will kill all plants and food production.
Maybe few people with enough reserves and grounded 20 feet under the soil will survivre to meet a destroyed world.
    WE NEED PEACE !!

  45. Philip on Sun, 16th Oct 2016 3:14 am

Guam? Seriously. We have B-52s, B-2s, B1Bs there! And what do they carry? No mention of Christchurch, Dunedin or Invercargill on the South Island, NZ? This article is just plain stupid.

  46. Roger on Sun, 16th Oct 2016 3:19 am

Makati – It is clear you have not studied radiation biology, statistics, or even basic worker-level radiation protection. No matter where you live, you are already exposed to radiation sources around the clock. It comes from outer space (cosmic radiation) , the ground, and even from radioisotopes already in your body. If you can avoid fallout for a couple weeks, radiation from the fallout will likely add less than 1% to the daily dose of radiation you already receive. It will not kill everyone from cancer as you claim.

In another event generating scare stories from the ignorami, the Fukushima disaster has not killed a single person from radiation exposure so far. However, over 15,000 died from a big water wave. But the hemp and beads crowd where I live on the Pacific coast are not looking for houses farther inland. They are instead spinning wild tales of trace radioactive material in the ocean, which thanks to modern instruments is now detectable in parts per billion. They chit themselves over a few harmless atoms, and ignore the real looming danger that has already killed thousands. Please get some education, and stop embarrassing yourself on the web.

I realize it did say “in a non-nuclear” conflict, but I’m not sure where they are coming up with Kansas City being a safe haven. Have they not heard of Ft. Riley? Maybe they are decommissioned now, but Kansas used to be one truly hotbed of underground missile silos. Sure, the farm country and much water throughout the state are ideal for living off the land, but the proximity is a bit close. As for Iceland and Antarctica (planning on eating penguins? What would you grow and how? have to have some source of fuel to stay warm) – well, maybe Iceland, plenty of water available, but I think they’re overestimating the availability of fish as a source for food since the demise of our oceans are coming up sooner than we realize. And GUAM? Really, isn’t that one of our larger air bases? or was that just post WWII and the Vietnam War? Did we suddenly stop using it for our large nuclear carrying flying machines? Great pictures. Ridiculously non-researched article.

  49. leo on Sun, 16th Oct 2016 3:21 am
