Close your eyes. Take yourself forward in time to 2050, and then look back to 2020. What will you see? What will the historians of the future say of this time? What was the trajectory that the world embarked on after it? Was it a turning point, or just a blip in the flowing trends of civilisation?
You probably assume I am inviting you to reflect on the impact of COVID-19. And perhaps I am, at the margins. But in the centreground, for me, is the awakening of the world’s response to climate change, and a more profound understanding of our impact generally, as humanity on our planet and our societies.
Set COVID-19 aside, for a moment, and let’s refocus on the long-term trends of civilisation, at this point in December 2020.
First, the world’s population continues to grow, albeit at a slowing pace. From 7.7 billion people on the planet in 2019, the global population is projected to grow to around 11 billion by the end of the century.[1] So our first question is can we run this planet sustainably for a population of at least 10 billion? Can we develop our clean water supplies, sanitation, food supplies, education, healthcare, energy, transport and digital networks to support that number of global citizens?
Second, the population continues to become more urban. Today it is around 55 per cent of the total global population, up from about 36 per cent when I was born in 1970, and projected to be around 70 per cent by 2050[2]. Some say COVID-19 will kill the desire to live in cities and stall the urbanisation trend. I doubt that. The bright lights of the cities will continue to draw us in, for both financial and societal opportunity, for culture and for fun. So our second question is can we provide quality of life even when this expanding population is crowded into densely populated areas? Can we provide transport systems without air pollution and congestion? Can we provide decent, modern housing that doesn’t cram families together into small boxes? Can we provide open space, trees, clean the streets and manage crime?
Third, we continue to reduce extreme poverty, from around 1.7 billion individuals 30 years ago, to less than 700 million today. Rising living standards across India, as well as China, South America and now Africa, supported by the concerted efforts of multilateral development agencies and more enlightened rich countries, have driven this success. And infrastructure has played a critical role, with schools supporting rising education standards, roads and railways connecting people to work and goods to markets, and airports and ports opening up global export opportunities. Today, sadly, the World Bank’s expectation is that COVID-19 could start to undermine this progress, tipping up to 150 million more people into extreme poverty, over the next two years, so trillions of dollars more investment is now required to tackle that risk and to ensure that eventually everyone globally can enjoy both prosperity and quality of life, in line with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. So, our third question is, how do we maintain this momentum, in particular as governments are impoverished by the fight against COVID-19, and the world lurches towards isolationist and protectionist policies?
Fourth, and not least, but of more criticality and urgency than all the rest, we continue to kill our planet. Well not actually the planet itself, but the ability of the planet to support us as humans and most other lifeforms. Despite the breakthrough of the Paris Agreement and the commitment of nearly all the world’s countries to a trajectory below two degrees, carbon emissions continue to rise. And we cannot celebrate if they drop this year, because the world is not going to vote to lockdown in perpetuity, and there is no vaccine for climate change. Infrastructure is responsible for around 70 per cent of all carbon emissions, through energy, transport and materials such as cement. We have made progress, particularly in the power generation sector. The cost of wind and solar power, and of lithium-ion batteries, have all fallen by around 90 per cent in the last 10 years. And a recent report by Goldman Sachs[3] estimates that the falling cost of capital for renewables, coupled with rising costs for hydrocarbon developments, means hurdle rates for renewable projects are now only 3-5 per cent compared to 10-20 per cent for oil and gas ones. Economics alone may therefore now drive the continued decarbonisation of power generation. But the world is still a long way from decarbonising the transport sector, and tackling heat emissions from buildings. So, our fourth, final and most important question is, how do we galvanise the world to do what is necessary to halve greenhouse gas emissions by 2030?
I lead both KPMG’s Infrastructure practice and KPMG IMPACT, our recently launched initiative focussed on sustainability, climate change and decarbonisation, and economic and social development. And I see a strong nexus between the two roles. Infrastructure is front and centre of the world’s challenge and opportunity to find a path to sustainable quality of life for everyone, everywhere.
Lack of technology is NOT the barrier. We have nearly all the technology we need to run a world sustainably for 10 billion + people. Lack of money is NOT the barrier. There is huge demand globally to invest in infrastructure, and that investment will drive economic growth, tax revenues and ultimately fund itself. The barrier here is the capability, and in some cases the willingness, of governments to do what is needed. The solution is in our hands and in our determination to work together, globally, to make the world a better place.
I am an optimist. I don’t think COVID-19 will, ultimately, have a big impact on the trends of population growth, urbanisation and growing economic prosperity. But I do think it has played an important role in opening the eyes of individuals, businesses and governments to the vulnerability of humanity, and that 2020 will be remembered as the year that we got collectively serious on climate change and sustainability generally.

…I don’t hate English either. If they change their mind, they are welcome back, but only if they self-identify as loyal Europeans, no ifs and buts. I have zero problems recognizing Britain as a “Great European Nation”. The waiting is for the English to see themselves as such. It will probably require the breakup of the US to achieve that. People like you, who define themselves as European, can always find a shelter in the Common European Home, if the geopolitical going gets tough Down Under.

One of the last courageous Brits, Roald Dahl, is dead. His family is clearly of a lesser caliber:
https://www.roalddahl.com/global/rdsc-and-family-notice
“Apology for anti-Semitic comments made by Roald Dahl”
Roald Dahl had the nerve to claim that “most media are jewish owned” (in woke Britain you can’t call a spade a spade) and “in the jewish character there is something that generates hostility” (just read the anti-white posts by apneaman here to verify the veracity of that).
Abraham van Helsing on Sun, 6th Dec 2020 7:42 am
Oops, he died in 1990.
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-9022471/Roald-Dahls-family-apologises-antisemitism.html#comments
His relatives issued a statement describing Dahl’s views as ‘incomprehensible to us’, after becoming concerned about the potential of his racism to tarnish his legacy.
In an interview with the New Statesman magazine in 1983, Dahl – who died in 1990, aged 74 – declared: ‘There is a trait in the Jewish character that does provoke animosity… even a stinker like Hitler didn’t just pick on them for no reason.’
Interesting that the readers do stress that Dahl had the right of his opinions, although they all denounce said opinions.
Any other opinion probably would not have made it past the sensor anyway.

“Our carefully engineered high-tech sneakers were not being produced by intelligent cyborgs or self-replicating molecular nanotechnology; they were being made on the equivalent of old-fashioned Singer sewing machines, by the daughters of Mexican and Indonesian farmers who, as the result of WTO or NAFTA–sponsored trade deals, had been ousted from their ancestral lands. It was a guilty awareness that lay beneath the postmodern sensibility and its celebration of the endless play of images and surfaces.”
Duncan Idaho on Sun, 6th Dec 2020 11:59 am
“There is reason to believe that even by the fifties and sixties, the pace of technological innovation was slowing down from the heady pace of the first half of the century. There was a last spate in the fifties when microwave ovens (1954), the Pill (1957), and lasers (1958) all appeared in rapid succession. But since then, technological advances have taken the form of clever new ways of combining existing technologies (as in the space race) and new ways of putting existing technologies to consumer use (the most famous example is television, invented in 1926, but mass produced only after the war.) Yet, in part because the space race gave everyone the impression that remarkable advances were happening, the popular impression during the sixties was that the pace of technological change was speeding up in terrifying, uncontrollable ways.”

clog, you are still confusing anti-white with anti-you, AKA anti-scum-N-dumb.
Also, in your jacked through the roof paranoia, you continue to redact out the parts of my comments that don’t fit your narrative & standard villain categories.
I’ve told you many times, I’m not a Jew, but rather their biggest fanboy. Jews are my heroes.
I HEART JEWS!!!
If I was a Jew I would say I was a Jew because, c’mon, who in their right mind would not want the glory & recognition that go with being a member of the most superior race of men (god men) to grace the earth?
I do have some things in common with Jews though, like how painfully easy (and boring) white peoples education standards are. The very fact I attended government schools (remedial by Jew standards) indicates I’m no Jew & I had to dumb it down just to fit in. Eventually I needed to leave due to the sheer boredom, plus I did not want the label, ‘government public school graduate’ stuck on me for life – could you possibly set the bar any lower?
Besides, like Jews, my Dad, who ironically was a public school teacher, home schooled us on the side along these lines https://bit.ly/36M3rE4
In addition to my superior intellect, like Jews, I’m wealthy. Not Jewish, I own the world & control your sad lives wealthy. My own version of wealthy – I never need to work again wealthy. Oh & unlike Jews, I came by mine honestly. Worked for it & inherited a nice chunk 3 years ago. You remember when I disappeared from this site 3 years ago?
Clog, I can’t find even 1 blog where any Jews in their 70’s spend all day, everyday hating Gentiles, predicting their doom & trying to enrage younger Jews to do the Gentile killing dirty work they never had the balls to do themselves. Why is that clog?
clog if the Jews were worried about a loser like you they would have sent a Mossad agent to help you have an accident long ago.
I’d say they laugh at fools like you, but you don’t even exist for them. A lifetime of anti-Jewism & they won’t even acknowledge you exist. If they ever do pay attention to you it’ll only be for as long as it takes them to scrape you off the bottom of their boot.
Ok clog, this is the point where you get all bent & flustered & predict (again) an anti-jew uprising & complete genocide for next Tuesday which will be followed by Trump’s coronation as king of the fucking universe.
I HEART JEWS!!!I HEART JEWS!!!I HEART JEWS!!!
Jews are the wind beneath my wings!

“A Resolving Picture”
“Much as Chief Justice John Roberts would like to be the finger down the Deep State’s throat to trigger the up-chucking of Mr. Trump from the nation’s gullet, it looks like he won’t get his chance in the new 6-3 disposition of the US Supreme Court. So far, it is Justice Samuel Alito in the lead, preparing a landing zone for the President’s case against the state of Pennsylvania in its shabby-ass attempt to stuff its ballot boxes with iffy mail-in votes. I believe that case is going to be heard, and Justice Roberts’ position will be moot.”
“The problem over in PA is that its Act 77 bill passed before the election by the state legislature to expand absentee balloting (i.e., mail-in voting) did not comply with the PA state constitution, and required a constitutional amendment, which never happened. Could be pretty cut-and-dried. While the SCOTUS is thought to be reluctant to intervene in state constitutional issues, a case involving federal elections may prove an exception. And then there are other issues with the states of Georgia, Michigan, Wisconsin, Nevada, and Arizona. A lot of electoral votes there.”
Uhuh, throwing out mail ballot votes as unconstitutional, that’s a new angle.
“What on earth was Canada-based Dominion, with its grotty Smartmatic software — connected to Venezuela and to George Soros’s would-be world-changing Open Society Foundation, and very possibly to China’s ruling party — doing in charge of counting our votes? Perhaps serving something other than America’s national interest. We’ll soon find out in a way that will make a lot of heads explode.”
Not even a meeting and vote in favor of Biden of the electoral college next week could decide things. How about Trump installing martial law? Calling for a new election without campaign, but also without Dominion “software”. Wtf do you need software or “algorithms”, where you a simple abacus suffices. What happened to: 1+1=2?
