The turning point of 2020

The turning point of 2020 thumbnail

Close your eyes. Take yourself forward in time to 2050, and then look back to 2020. What will you see? What will the historians of the future say of this time? What was the trajectory that the world embarked on after it? Was it a turning point, or just a blip in the flowing trends of civilisation?

You probably assume I am inviting you to reflect on the impact of COVID-19. And perhaps I am, at the margins. But in the centreground, for me, is the awakening of the world’s response to climate change, and a more profound understanding of our impact generally, as humanity on our planet and our societies.

Set COVID-19 aside, for a moment, and let’s refocus on the long-term trends of civilisation, at this point in December 2020.

First, the world’s population continues to grow, albeit at a slowing pace. From 7.7 billion people on the planet in 2019, the global population is projected to grow to around 11 billion by the end of the century.[1] So our first question is can we run this planet sustainably for a population of at least 10 billion? Can we develop our clean water supplies, sanitation, food supplies, education, healthcare, energy, transport and digital networks to support that number of global citizens?

Second, the population continues to become more urban. Today it is around 55 per cent of the total global population, up from about 36 per cent when I was born in 1970, and projected to be around 70 per cent by 2050[2]. Some say COVID-19 will kill the desire to live in cities and stall the urbanisation trend. I doubt that. The bright lights of the cities will continue to draw us in, for both financial and societal opportunity, for culture and for fun. So our second question is can we provide quality of life even when this expanding population is crowded into densely populated areas? Can we provide transport systems without air pollution and congestion? Can we provide decent, modern housing that doesn’t cram families together into small boxes? Can we provide open space, trees, clean the streets and manage crime?

Third, we continue to reduce extreme poverty, from around 1.7 billion individuals 30 years ago, to less than 700 million today. Rising living standards across India, as well as China, South America and now Africa, supported by the concerted efforts of multilateral development agencies and more enlightened rich countries, have driven this success. And infrastructure has played a critical role, with schools supporting rising education standards, roads and railways connecting people to work and goods to markets, and airports and ports opening up global export opportunities. Today, sadly, the World Bank’s expectation is that COVID-19 could start to undermine this progress, tipping up to 150 million more people into extreme poverty, over the next two years, so  trillions of dollars more investment is now required to tackle that risk and to ensure that eventually everyone globally can enjoy both prosperity and quality of life, in line with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. So, our third question is, how do we maintain this momentum, in particular as governments are impoverished by the fight against COVID-19, and the world lurches towards isolationist and protectionist policies?

Fourth, and not least, but of more criticality and urgency than all the rest, we continue to kill our planet. Well not actually the planet itself, but the ability of the planet to support us as humans and most other lifeforms. Despite the breakthrough of the Paris Agreement and the commitment of nearly all the world’s countries to a trajectory below two degrees, carbon emissions continue to rise. And we cannot celebrate if they drop this year, because the world is not going to vote to lockdown in perpetuity, and there is no vaccine for climate change. Infrastructure is responsible for around 70 per cent of all carbon emissions, through energy, transport and materials such as cement. We have made progress, particularly in the power generation sector. The cost of wind and solar power, and of lithium-ion batteries, have all fallen by around 90 per cent in the last 10 years. And a recent report by Goldman Sachs[3] estimates that the falling cost of capital for renewables, coupled with rising costs for hydrocarbon developments, means hurdle rates for renewable projects are now only 3-5 per cent compared to 10-20 per cent for oil and gas ones. Economics alone may therefore now drive the continued decarbonisation of power generation. But the world is still a long way from decarbonising the transport sector, and tackling heat emissions from buildings. So, our fourth, final and most important question is, how do we galvanise the world to do what is necessary to halve greenhouse gas emissions by 2030?

I lead both KPMG’s Infrastructure practice and KPMG IMPACT, our recently launched initiative focussed on sustainability, climate change and decarbonisation, and economic and social development. And I see a strong nexus between the two roles. Infrastructure is front and centre of the world’s challenge and opportunity to find a path to sustainable quality of life for everyone, everywhere.

Lack of technology is NOT the barrier. We have nearly all the technology we need to run a world sustainably for 10 billion + people. Lack of money is NOT the barrier. There is huge demand globally to invest in infrastructure, and that investment will drive economic growth, tax revenues and ultimately fund itself. The barrier here is the capability, and in some cases the willingness, of governments to do what is needed. The solution is in our hands and in our determination to work together, globally, to make the world a better place.

I am an optimist. I don’t think COVID-19 will, ultimately, have a big impact on the trends of population growth, urbanisation and growing economic prosperity. But I do think it has played an important role in opening the eyes of individuals, businesses and governments to the vulnerability of humanity, and that 2020 will be remembered as the year that we got collectively serious on climate change and sustainability generally.

“US-Botschafterin fordert Bau-Moratorium für Nord Stream 2 – doch die Verlege-Arbeit startet wieder”
(US ambassador demands building stop, but Germans and Russian ignore that.)

The real reason for European wish to build the pipeline: to guarantee energy delivery security, circumventing the dirt-poor Ukraine, that uses the pipeline over its soil to tap gas, without paying for it (at some point hey owed Russia 2 billion), forcing Russia to halt the flow, leaving Europe without sufficient gas. The new gas pipeline is in the interest of both Russia and Europe. Natural gas is the cleanest source of fossil fuel and Europe is strict on climate. If they want to meet their own climate standards, they will need more gas, that only Russia can deliver against relative cheap prices. And for Russia, Europe is the preferred recipient, because they pay their bill with good money, and, because quietly Russia wants to maneuver itself into the European orbit, geopolitically, away from China, but on its own terms and not those of Washington. A European Europe of 640 million, mre than strong enough to be America’s future overlord. America senses the immense danger, but there is little they can do.

And then there is China, that would embrace the vision of Greater Europe and China, together replacing US hegemony. It is the essence of the Chinese proposal of the New Silk Road. China is identitarian and accepts that Russia is European, not Asian.

It looks that Macron has embraced the old French anti-Anglo, Gaullist instincts and that he will go along with that scheme too, just like the USA and USSR in the thirties schemed to push aside the hegemon of those days, Europe.

And yet the latest electric Cadillacs are going to be made in China. Cadillac expects the current trend of selling more cars in China than in the U.S to continue.
This was all agreed years ago by the industrialists who can’t jump into bed with China quickly enough.
If there is an idealogical war going on it’s not affecting the behaviour of the monied interests.

“No Brexit breakthrough: Trade talks will continue tomorrow after phone call between Boris Johnson and EU chief Ursula von der Leyen ends with ‘significant differences’ amid claims of no deal unless French President Emmanuel Macron backs down“

    https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-9021621/Brexit-trade-talks-carry-tomorrow-sides-saying-significant-differences-remain.html

Macron probably won’t back down because he follows a Gaullist continental European agenda.

That insignificant fisheries posse is merely a pretext to sabotage the “negotiations”.

    In related news:

Russia invited populist AfD-delegation to Moscow. The invitation coming from FM Lavrov was accepted:

The AfD, like Macron, advocate a reset in EU-Russian relations. “Reset” as in “vastly improve”.

“Breaking: GEORGE SOROS Appoints Lord Mark Malloch Brown – The Former President of Smartmatic – to Lead Open Society Foundation”
    https://www.thegatewaypundit.com/2020/12/george-soros-appoints-lord-mark-malloch-brown-former-president-smartmatic-lead-open-society-foundation/

“On Saturday afternoon billionaire far left funder George Soros announced new leadership at his Open Society Foundation. Lord Mark Malloch Brown, the former UN deputy secretary‐general and UK minister and president of Smartmatic voting systems, will replace Patrick Gaspard at the helm. Brown was formerly the vice-chairman of Soros’s Investment Funds and even the deputy secretary-general of the United Nations when he worked as chief of staff to Kofi Annan. Lord Mark Malloch-Brown was also the chairman of Smartmatic. The Smartmatic owners, were denounced in June 2004 by the press for having received a US $200,000 equity investment from a Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela (BRV) joint venture fund called FONCREI which was a Chavez organization. A Chavez campaign adviser was also placed on the board as well. Smartmatic has links with Dominion Voting Systems, the scandalous company used to steal the election for Joe Biden this year. So this move by Soros makes sense. It was a good year for Soros and his priorities.”

“clog, here’s one all about you….
    from my favourite Dutch Jew”

He was ok, as he distanced himself from the tribe and became Europe’s first secular jew. He made himself useful in polishing lenses for the great Christiaan Huygens, the greatest scientist in Europe, between Galileo and Newton:

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/Dutch-Light-Christiaan-Huygens-Science/dp/1509893318/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=dutch+light&qid=1607207598&sr=8-1

Spinoza wad a little bit too much in love with the liberal intellectual climate in the Netherlands of the 17th century, to be bothered with tribal limitations and Talmud and what not.

I recently was in Voorburg where Spinoza lived as a modest lens specialist and I visited the Huygens estate Hofwijck:

    https://deepresource.wordpress.com/2020/11/22/dutch-light-christiaan-huygens/

Here your Carl Sagan about Holland in the days of Huygens:

    https://youtu.be/sexW4XSof2s

At least Sagan had respect for European achievement, where people like you only want to destroy it. It took 100 years to build a cathedral, that can be destroyed in 5 minutes by bombs. Europeans ate the builders, modern jews its destroyers. Jews are hooligans, nothing more.

We’ve gone from 4.6 million dairy farms in the United States in 1940 to less than 34,000 today. The average size [of herds] is 1,300 cows, while the average size in organic dairy is 100 cows. Fascism sees its salvation in giving these masses not their right, but instead a chance to express themselves. The masses have a right to change property relations; Fascism seeks to give them an expression while preserving property. The logical result of Fascism is the introduction of aesthetics into political life.”

    https://www.thegatewaypundit.com/2020/12/stunning-michigan-pennsylvania-secretaries-state-gave-zuckerbergs-rock-vote-activists-access-sensitive-data-voters/

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s contributed $400 million to a leftist group that was used to give Democrat-stronghold areas, especially in critical swing states, an advantage in the November election. In the video, Kline reveals how the Democrats stole ballots from Americans. He explained how “third parties,” specifically Rock the Vote, were given “front end access” to voter rolls by Democrat Secretary of States where they actually had the ability to add names to the voter rolls…Kline explained to Charlie Kirk that Rock The Vote signed an information-sharing contract with PA Democrat Secretary of State Kathy Boockvar and MI Democrat Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson. They gave them full access to their state’s entire voter rolls. According to Phil Kline, their contracts gave them the ability to freely enter data into the poll books. Kline explained that he isn’t saying they added voters, but they are getting access to information showing that voters who don’t exist voted in our elections…“This was an orchestrated and concerted effort to dramatically and improperly influence this election for a specific result that was manifested through something we’ve never seen before, and that’s private-public partnerships that shared sensitive data on individual citizens with the private sector so that they would have front door access to manipulate the election.”

Who qualifies as elite for a start?–Her Maj Queen Elizabeth? Rupert Murdoch?–Biden?–Bezos, Gates, Musk? Trump’s kids?

there has to be something that says you’re ‘elite’—and so by definition says you’re not.

    Is it money–class– brains?

Does one volunteer or is one ‘recruited’? Can it be bought? Trump might try that if he had any actual money

All that has to be resolved before they can begun to ‘plan’ the future for the rest of us. And themselves.

Which is why I think such a notion is vanishingly unlikely.

The only guarantee of the future is that it won’t be what you plan. Even if there was ‘plan’ it could only involve some kind of elevation of the aristos into walled enclaves while the rest of us were doomed to the rank of serfs. In that event the aristo need guards, lots of them.

Who will only stay loyal as long as they are paid well. And the guards wages can only be paid by the labour of the serfs.—who quickly figure out that they are paying to be oppressed and subjugated.

That is an arrangement that never ends well.

the trouble with that idea is that the serfs of the 14th c saw their ‘lot’ as ordained by god.

Now the proposed serf class would know differently. The result would be bloody carnage.”

Political abuse of psychiatry in the Soviet Union

“There was systematic political abuse of psychiatry in the Soviet Union,[1] based on the interpretation of political opposition or dissent as a psychiatric problem.[2] It was called “psychopathological mechanisms” of dissent.[3]

During the leadership of General Secretary Leonid Brezhnev, psychiatry was used to disable and remove from society political opponents (“dissidents”) who openly expressed beliefs that contradicted the official dogma.[4][5] The term “philosophical intoxication”, for instance, was widely applied to the mental disorders diagnosed when people disagreed with the country’s Communist leaders and, by referring to the writings of the Founding Fathers of Marxism–Leninism—Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels, and Vladimir Lenin—made them the target of criticism.”

Brexit btw will only increase the speed of “wokeness”, that originates from North-America (ZOG), not continental Europe. The only immigration the Brexiteers will achieve to halt is WHITE immigration, from Europe.

For us in Europe, replacing the UK with Russia, means thar chances for our racial survival INCREASE, hence I’m pro-Brexit. If Britain-England would chose to join at least the common market again, I would welcome that, for Dutch-economic self-interest and removing the threat of Britain trying to sabotage the EU.

    My wish-hierarchy regarding Brexit:

    1. soft Brexit
    2. hard Brexit
    3. Remain

Now all that is needed is a nice little trade war EU-US, combined with no deal Brexit, to engineer the split in the West, ensure that Germany gets nuclear weapons and that Russia finally gets integrated into the Common European Home.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_European_Home

Next we are going to signal to the Chinese that we buy into their New Silk Road, provided trade flows are equal in both durections. This is an option the Anglos don’t have, for reasons see this:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_current_account_balance

Next the dollar is going to be erased from Eurasia.

Additionally, the EU, Russia and China will withdraw from the UN and build new organizations in the middle of Eurasia, tailor-made for a multi-polar world, rather than US-hegemony. The world will be run by Greater Europe and China, who will be both partners and competitors (for global markets and in space and influence outside Eurasia).

The US losing the dollar reserve currency will throw that country into disarray, increasing pressure to divide the remaining poverty, increasing ethnic tensions and eventually a breakup.
