By 2035 the global energy transition will reach a point of no return, according to a recent report from Wood Mackenzie.
By that year, says WoodMac, renewables will likely meet 20 percent of global power demand, up from today’s 7 percent. The combination of wind, solar and electric vehicles will displace about 100 billion cubic feet of oil per day, creating an “unstoppable” shift for companies and countries around the world.
“Stopping this transition seems highly unlikely,” reads the report. “It’s going to happen.”

Though several global power markets already claim percentages of renewables above 20 percent, WoodMac projects a wide range of markets will rise to reach that level in coming decades. After that, adoption of renewables accelerates even faster — with wind, solar and electrified transport becoming “the default choice across many energy systems around the world.”
Power markets will completely transform. WoodMac notes in the report that wind, solar and storage all have “high disruptive potential in power markets.”
A year after the 2035 inflection point, WoodMac forecasts a peak in oil demand, with electric motors accounting for 15 to 20 percent of all miles traveled in buses, cars, trucks or on bicycle. Electric vehicles could eliminate the use of 6 million barrels of oil per day by 2040.
WoodMac also notes the inflection point could come earlier as policy gets more ambitious, or if technologies such as advanced energy storage and microgrids take root earlier than current projections.
The report is significant in that it’s coming from an oil and gas consulting group. In September, WoodMac unveiled its new Power & Renewables team, assembled from its own global power analysts along with analysts from recently acquired companies MAKE Consulting, which focuses on wind research, and GTM Research.
The transition is inevitable and powerful. But WoodMac’s projections are still far behind the emissions scenarios that scientists say are necessary to mitigate the worst effects of climate change. In a report released by the U.N. this month, authors claimed the world needs to get 70 to 85 percent of its electricity from renewables by mid-century to limit warming to 1.5°C.
WoodMac’s head of global wind energy research Dan Shreve said, “We’re going to have a tremendous amount of difficulty” reaching the IPCC’s goals based on WoodMac’s current projections of the energy transition.

“Antius, are you going to moderate your discussion forum or even have a discussion board? I will miss your on-topic energy support to this discussion board. You are at the top in my opinion of energy understanding here. neder does not really understand energy fully. For neder it is about a message energy fits into. Anyone who lives in a fantasy world of a future of his own making does not have a deeper understanding.”
I would hope to continue discussion here on a more intermittent basis. I would plan to have a discussion board on any blog, as team based interaction is very important when getting to the truth of any subject. I am opposed to moderation on principle, even for opinions I strongly disagree with. Freedom of speech is something that either exists or it doesn’t. However, much will depend upon the terms and conditions of the hosting site. If they impose conditions that require that certain content is excluded, then moderation may be necessary. I will apply it as little as I can get away with.
I have the utmost respect for Cloggie and yourself. You have both provided content that I have learned from. Cloggie generally understands the political situation better than I do. His energy related comments are useful and informative, but he is prone to wishful thinking. There appears to be a hidden assumption that ideas can be argued into a better position, rather like a lawyer arguing in court. He seems to believe that ideas will succeed if only he can argue down the doubters. But energy economics doesn’t work that way. Real life will coldly shit all over our most beloved ideas, if they have deficiencies routed in physics, thermodynamics or basic human psychology. To understand the real world situation, one must be prepared to critically examine everything, even things we may be very fond of. That is never a very comfortable thing to have to do.
The truth is that there are far fewer options than we would like to accept when it comes to engineering a realistic energy future. Our situation is quite constrained by limits that we have no control over. Our culture requires us to think and behave in certain ways; our economy requires us to live and work in certain ways; our cities and transport systems lock us into patterns of energy consumption that are difficult to change in the short term; our legal and regulatory infrastructure has been built up gradually and will continue to apply and limit our options, long after the circumstances that created it are gone and it is nothing but an embuggerance to those that have to live by it.
In short, our patterns of living and the energy intensity associated with it are locked in and take decades or centuries to change. There are hard limits to what we can afford to pay for those inflexible energy services that our systems demand of us. New ideas that sound good on paper, like electric vehicles, renewable energy, new urbanism, permaculture, car free cities, 100% recycling, etc.; all advance with frustrating slowness in the face of the sheer inflexible inertia of the real world.
I initially thought that nuclear energy was the one thing we had up our sleeve that could be expanded rapidly enough to buy us several decades, by effectively flooding society with enough cheap electricity to drown out other rising costs and inefficiencies. But this is constrained by political and institutional inertia, not to mention human psychology, which are every bit as retarding as the thermodynamic and physics constraints that hinder the large scale adoption of renewable energy.

“Climate change: Five cheap ways to remove CO2 from the atmosphere”
The problem with all of these ideas is that they all imply additional costs and energy expenditures, at a time when living standards are dropping and the energy cost of energy is rising.
BECCS is a good example. We start with an energy source that is more expensive than coal and pushes up the price of food by displacing cropland. We then add onto it an energy consuming step that will make those problems even worse; forcing us to burn more biomass, at the expense of more money and cropland, to sequester the CO2 from burning the fuel in the first place.
The thing ends up running up its own arse, trying to sequester (bury) it’s own shite by eating even more and producing even more shite that it has to bury.
Davy on Fri, 26th Oct 2018 7:41 am
I agree Antius. This is typical fake green talk that does not want to consider consuming less and discounts the economics. Despite that it appears some of the best strategies are organic and biomass related IOW leverage nature to do the work.
