NEW YORK (Reuters) – After weak prices in the 1990s due to oversupply, natural gas production in North America will probably continue to decline unless there is another big discovery, Exxon Mobil Corp.’s (XOM.N: Quote, Profile, Research) chief executive said on Tuesday. “Gas production has peaked in North America,” Chief Executive Lee Raymond told reporters […]

Not long ago, the notion of the price of crude oil hitting $60 a barrel would have caused apoplexy. But after two years of steadily rising prices, the fact that oil trading in New York came within 30 cents of touching the $60 mark, setting a new record in the process, passed with barely a […]
Tight U.S. natural gas and world oil markets that have produced rising prices and stress on consumers won’t ease up soon, U.S. Energy Secretary Samuel Bodman said Wednesday. Oil producers will struggle for years to keep up with strong growth in demand, Bodman said, a view that contradicts some analysts’ more sanguine forecasts. The gap […]

From an email from a reader of ours:
“I have met with some skepticism from co-workers and friends over the fact that even if we have “only” used up half the world’s oil, we should still be able to easily go on and extract the last half. From what I’ve read, this just isn’t so.
I have thought about how to demonstrate the declining production paradigm, and came up with this simple demonstration. Take an average alcoholic. Take a 20 ounce tumbler, and stuff a new clean sponge in the bottom. Pour a fresh pint of dark beer in the tumbler and top it off with a little more, so the alky knows at least there is a full 16 ounces in the tumbler.
So there is known quantity (proven reserves) of dark beer (oil) in the tumbler (world), plus a little more (undiscovered reserves). Have him drink to his hearts content…”

Peter M. Jackson, Cambridge Energy’s director of oil industry activity, acknowledged during a teleconference with reporters yesterday that last year’s discovery of 13 billion barrels of new oil worldwide did not nearly offset the 30.7 billion barrels pumped out of the ground. An oil glut is coming. That’s right, a glut, way too much oil — and the bold prediction is being made by one of the energy industry’s top consultancies. Even more bold is the prediction’s timing, just as the benchmark price of oil is on the verge of cracking $60 (U.S.) a barrel and futures […]
