Japan wakes up
Professor Isshi, who has been working hard to raise awareness of Peak Oil in Japan, after attending the ASPO workshops, writes:
The leading Japanese newspaper, the Asahi Shimbun, at last reported “Oil Peak”, on 16th Sunday, on its top page. I think the article was big enough to give strong impressions to Japanese society. In addition to this, the Asahi had a large article alerting the modern wasteful civilization with a title “ Good Bye Wasteful Society”, which is to appear periodically on Sundays. The reporter named I.Tanaka, an economist, has been occasionally asking me for advice on the issues of Oil Peak, Energy and Environment. I think this is a big breakthrough for Japanese Society, considering the status of the Asahi Shimbun in Japan, the most prestigious and second biggest newspaper. So, I think this monumental.

The Group of Seven industrialized nations called on oil-producing nations and companies to lift the veil of secrecy surrounding output and reserves, aiming to keep a lid on prices and open new sources of supply.
“Transparency and data is key to the smooth operation of markets,” G7 finance ministers said in a statement after two days of talks ended on Saturday. The ministers said their aim was to ensure “energy security” and “a climate conducive to investment” in the industry.
“Built Green Colorado” has posted an introductory article on Peak Oil on their website.
President Bush has a simple policy about energy: produce more of it. The former oilman has packed his administration with veterans of the oil and coal industries. And for most of the first Bush term, his energy policy and his foreign policy were joined at the hip. Since the Bush administration believed that controlling the flow of oil from the Persian Gulf was critically important to the American economy, the invasion of Iraq seemed to serve both the president’s energy goals and his foreign policy ones.
Brazil’s Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Supply and the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) are developing a bilateral program to increase the production of ethanol and biodiesel in Brazil and its supply to the Japanese market. Beginning later this spring, Japanese and Brazilian technicians will create a detailed profile of Brazil’s agro energy sources […]
the post-peak-oil production world of tomorrow will see all regions of the U.S. concerned with local government and production. Why? Sprawlburbia is totally dependent on cheap oil.
Kunstler makes a case for this futurescape’s resemblance to a 19th century American town, with local food grown in outlying areas and backyards, and the general collapse of the Walmart/big box/suburban economy.
Russia said yesterday it had abandoned efforts to tie the rouble’s movement closely to the dollar and switched to shadowing both the euro and the US currency. The move heightened expectations that other countries operating de facto dollar pegs, such as China, could follow suit. With 81 per cent of Russia’s oil exports currently sold […]

I do not understand why anyone can believe that global oil production will not peak (‘Peak Oil’) for another 10 years — never mind 30 years. And yet, so many do. I would like to call such people ‘theorists’, because they are not basing their opinions on facts and current trends. On the contrary, they […]
With oil and gas prices at unprecedented levels, the good times continue to roll for U.S.-based exploration and production companies, including major independents Unocal, Burlington Resources, Anadarko Petroleum, Apache, Kerr-McGee and Devon Energy.
Japan Airlines Corp., the nation’s biggest carrier, said Friday that it lost about $36 million for its third fiscal quarter as surging fuel prices offset revenue gains. Jan. 28 (Bloomberg) — Malaysia isn’t a place traders look for clues about the U.S. dollar, yet Asia’s No. 10 economy may be offering some ominous ones. They can be found in a recent report on international reserve holdings at Bank Negara Malaysia, the nation’s central bank. It states that Malaysia made a $2.1 billion […]

Greetings Hydrogen Fuel Cell enthusiasts,
I am posting on behalf of a recently established project called The Hydrogen Expedition (T.H.E). T.H.E will be the first circumnavigation on the globe in a hydrogen fuel cell powered boat and, at just under 24 ft., will also set the Word Record for the smallest power boat to make the voyage. The Expedition promises to be one of tremendous worldwide appeal, demonstrating conclusively that hydrogen can be manipulated into the fuel source of the future.
The project is being organized and executed by a small group of University of Pennsylvania students though numerous prestigious professionals are serving as consultants. In its short life, T.H.E has already generated significant media attention and has been featured in The Boston Globe, The Rocky Mountain News and the Daily Pennsylvanian Newspaper among others. As interested members of the hydrogen community, we welcome your comments/ideas.

“[An attack on Iran] is simply not on the agenda at this point,” Condoleeza Rice said yesterday. Well, at least she’s honest, though CNN’s headline doesn’t help the confusion by emphasizing the “not on the agenda” part — a likely fraud if ever there was one.
AND NOW AN ARTICLE ABOUT GLOBAL WARMING. HTTP://WWW.NEWSCIENTIST.COM/ARTICLE.NS?ID=DN6964 IN THIS ARTICLE SOME SCIENTISTS PROJECT HOW MUCH WE WILL HAVE TO CUT CARBON DIOXIDE EMISSIONS IN ORDER TO KEEP (COMPUTER PROJECTED) INCREASES IN TEMPERATURE IN CHECK. THEY CLAIM WE WILL NEED TO AT LEAST CUT OUR EMISSIONS IN HALF BY 2050. WELL, THAT SHOULSN’T BE MUCH OF A PROBLEM IF YOU LISTEN TO A GROWING VOICE OF GEOLOGISTS AND OIL BUSINESS INVESTORS. THEY EXPECT OUR OIL SUPPLIES TO BE CUT IN HALF BEFORE 2015. JUST DO A SEARCH ON “PEAK OIL”, “HUBBERT’S PEAK”, OR “T. BOONE PICKENS” AND YOU WILL FIND NOT ONLY SPECULATION ABOUT THE FUTURE OF OIL, BUT A REPOSITORY OF CURRENT ARTICLES ABOUT WORLD OIL PRODUCTION. OF COURSE THERE ARE OTHERS WHO SPECULATE THAT THERE IS A LOT MORE OIL OUT THERE TO FIND, AND MAYBE EVEN THAT THE EARTH PRODUCES COMPLEX HYDROCARBONS IN ITS MANTLE. IN ANY CASE, I THINK IT IS TIME THE CLIMATE SCIENTISTS STARTED CONSIDERING THE POSSIBILITY OF LESS OIL USAGE IN THEIR LONG RANGE COMPUTER MODELS.
Judging by recent results from energy giants, oil really can be called black gold again. However, experts say it won’t all be plain sailing for the oil giants in 2005, as geopolitical influences shift. www.bbc.co.uk
The massive west Antarctic ice sheet, previously assumed to be stable, is starting to collapse, scientists warned on Tuesday.
Antarctica contains more than 90% of the world’s ice, and the loss of any significant part of it would cause a substantial sea level rise. Scientists used to view Antarctica as a “slumbering giant”, said Chris Rapley, from the British Antarctic Survey, but now he sees it as an “awakened giant”.
In his State of the Union address, US President George W Bush once again demonized Iran as “the world’s primary state sponsor of terror”, accusing it of pursuing nuclear weapons, abusing human rights and being led by a few unelected leaders. He also had a message for the Iranian people, “As you stand for your […]
Crude oil futures fell to a three-week low after a report showed U.S. gasoline supplies unexpectedly jumped last week and forecasts of mild weather eased concerns that winter heating supplies would fall short of demand. Gigantic changes to the world’s oceans, leading to the complete disappearance of marine life from cod to coral reefs, are now threatened by the main greenhouse gas causing global warming, British scientists warned yesterday. Researchers sounded the alarm about a completely new and potentially devastating danger to the world from the huge volumes of carbon […]
