The participants in the third World Policy Conference (WPC) called, on Saturday in Marrakech, for a “visible and transparent” global governance in order to find pragmatic and practical solutions to the issues challenging today’s world.

Speaking at the first plenary session on “Population, environment and health”, the participants underlined the interaction between demographic trends, climate change and public health issues. In this context, they examined the identification of the institutional improvements in order to strengthen the global governance regarding development issues. The participants lauded the efforts undertaken by the World Health Organization (WHO) in terms of public health, particularly in preventing against infectious diseases, such as STDs, AIDS and malaria. They also underscored the importance of joining the efforts of the international organizations, pharmaceutical companies and research institutes, calling for promoting scientific research to meet the growing needs of the world population. Regarding the close links between environment and health, the participants stressed the need for the environmental education, highlighting the importance of establishing funds to finance clean energy projects. They also called for an international “constructive” debate on migration, as emigrants contribute positively to boosting the hosting countries’ economy.

The Conference, which is held for the second time in Marrakech, will discuss “the commitments in terms of the governance of issues related to climate, population and health”, “the economic and financial governance”, “governance of cyberspace” and “the G20 and its future”. The WPC, which is an independent global forum, aims at encouraging collective reflection process and exchanging points of view between decision-makers on current challenges in order to improve global governance in all its dimensions. Some 150 politicians, multinational organizations’ officials, big companies’ chairmen and prominent experts and researchers take part in the WPC to examine issues relating to global governance in all its dimensions: global and regional, political (security), economic or financial, general or specialized.
