What Petrodollar: Russia, China To Create SWIFT Alternative

What Petrodollar: Russia, China To Create SWIFT Alternative thumbnail

If, when in February Victoria Nuland infamously launched a (not so) covert campaign to replace the ruling Ukraine president oblivious to the human casualties, resulting in a civil war in east Ukraine, NATO encroachment along the borders of Russia, and a near-terminal escalation in hostilities between Ukraine, Russian, and various regional NATO members, the US intention was to provoke the Kremlin so hard that the nation with the world’s largest reserves of mineral and energy resources would jettison the US Dollar and in the process begin the unraveling of the USD reserve currency status (as much as Jared Bernstein desires just such an outcome) it succeeded and then some. Because in the end it may have pushed not just Russia into the anti-petrodollar camp… it appears to have forced China in it as well.

According to Itar-Tass, Russia and China are discussing setting up a system of interbank transactions which will become an analogue to International banking transaction system SWIFT, First Deputy Prime Minister Igor Shuvalov told PRIME on Wednesday after negotiations in Beijing.

“Yes, we have discussed and we have approved this idea,” he said.

But wait: wasn’t it the UK’s desire to force Russia out of SWIFT just two weeks ago?  Why yes, and the fact that Russia is happy to do so, and on its own terms, once again shows just who has all the leverage, and who really needs, or rather doesn’t, the US Dollar.

More from Tass:

Russian authorities wanted to decrease the financial market’s dependence on SWIFT since the introduction of the first U.S. sanctions, when international payment systems Visa and MasterCard denied services to some Russian banks owned by blacklisted individuals.

According to Shuvalov, Russia has been also discussing establishment of an independent ratings agency with China. Concrete proposals will be made by the end of 2014, he said.

As regards China’s payment system UnionPay cooperation with the yet-to-be-established Russian national payment system, Shuvalov said that UnionPay is ready for a full-scale collaboration and will provide all infrastructural capacities for that.

The conclusion will be a repeat of what we have said every single time we report on the Eurasian alliance’s drift away from the petrodollar, as stated most recently two weeks ago:

We will merely say what we have said previously, and it touches on what will be the most remarkable aspect of Obama’s legacy, because while the hypocrite “progressive” president who even his own people have accused of being a “brown-faced Clinton” after selling out to Wall Street and totally wrecking US foreign policy abroad, is already the worst president in a century of US history according to public polls, the fitting epitaph will come when the president’s policies put an end to dollar hegemony and end the reserve currency status of the dollar once and for all, thereby starting the rapid, and uncontrolled, collapse of the US empire. To wit:

In retrospect it will be very fitting that the crowning legacy of Obama’s disastrous reign, both domestically and certainly internationally, will be to force the world’s key ascendent superpowers (we certainly don’t envision broke, insolvent Europe among them) to drop the Petrodollar and end the reserve status of the US currency.

And once China and Russia show that not only can it be done but thanks to US prodding it has been done, expect other countries to promptly follow the anti-SWIFT axis on their own…

The Chinese UnionPay is by most measures the largest credit card system in the world. MasterCard is still number one in total sales volume and dollars per sale, but in every other metric like number of transactions and users UnionPay is the largest in the world.
Last month UnionPay credit and debit cards and ATMs were deployed throughout Russia, making all other cards unnecessary from now on. I don’t see Visa or MasterCard taking further actions against Russia, as they would lose the Russian market as a consequence.
Russia is also building its own card payment system, to be deployed later this year, using the Chinese software and hardware as a starting point. So, by January, Russia will have two separate parallel card payment systems independent from the West.

In spite of the recent ceasefire imposed on the Kiev regime by the brutal operational, logistical, tactical, and strategic military defeats they have suffered, I expect the real conflict between the USA and Russia to continue escalating in the future. The ceasefire is unlikely to last longer than whatever time Kiev needs to be ready to attack again. Those Nazi retards haven’t learned their lessons yet, and Poroshenko only controls his chocolate factory. I think Kolomoyskyy is the stronger player in Banderastan and he wants ethnic cleansing to continue in Novorossiya.
The world will split in two at least. I wonder where Europe will end, but right now the USA has them right were they want them. The French people must be really pissed.

JuanP: I didn’t know that. Indeed, according to wikipedia UnionPay has already made great strides into Russia.

Juan, looks like the Russian separatist are massing near the city of Mariupol for a push that will give Russia a land bridge to Crimea.

Another article on Yahoo telling us that nuclear war with Russia is a distinct possibility.

“World War 3 is on the tips of the tongues of many, and now that Russia has fired its nuclear weapons as a show of force, Vladimir Putin is already warning the United States and NATO he believes this new Cold War 2 will cause a planned arms escalation in response to threats made over the Ukraine crisis.

In a related report by The Inquisitr, even before Russia invaded Ukraine, various U.S. investors and financial analysts were saying World War 3 is inevitable based upon history and economic cycles.”

And why is WWIII and nuclear war with Russia on the tips of tongues of many? Because, Yahoo and other MSM are continually pumping that possibility at us.

Notice that this article starts with a big lie — that Russia invaded Ukraine.

So, what’s up with this and so many other related articles. One word: FEAR!!! The intent is to instill fear, to beat the drums of war, to rouse the population to a war-time mentality.

Major bullshit is on the move when they start pumping nuclear war at us, of that you can be sure. It is a cover for the things they don’t want us to see, that they want to distract us from. When such blatant efforts at scaring the shit out of us are being made, you can be sure that there are ulterior motives and behind-the-scenes maneuvers going on that they don’t want us to know about. Don’t believe the hype. Try to see through the fog of lies and propaganda to what is really happening, and it all points to one thing: this global economy and our oil-based civilization is on its last leg, trembling from the unsustainable weight, and it is about to crash down hard.

I keep telling my buddies who watch faux news that it is all smoke and mirrors to keep them from searching for what tptb are really up to.

Chances are very good that all this “threat” of nuclear war with Russia is just as much or more for public consumption in Russia as it is for Europe/America. Let’s assume that what most of us believe to be true IS true — that is, shale oil is about to close to peaking and dropping off the backside of that peak. Consumers can no longer afford to support the extravagantly expensive price of oil extraction, leading to demand destruction and lower prices for oil which we are currently seeing. Add to that the fact that China’s economy is not growing as much, if at all. And the world governments are having to face the fact that pumping trillion$ into the stock market has ceased to produce any beneficial effect. That leaves one result — lower demand for oil, not as much oil, and a price for oil that puts the Russian economy in a world of hurt, as it does a lot of other oil exporting countries. It isn’t just America that needs to wield fear and threat of war to keep its population subdued as the very difficult times comes rolling in like tidal waves of destruction washing over the mountains and plains of our fair land. Russia has a restive population that has also become accustomed to certain government-funded goodies, and without sufficient oil/NG sales and sufficient price, Russia will have a very difficult time holding their large collection of ethnic peoples together under one roof. There is just so much bullshit and so many dangerous scenarios heading our way — and Russia’s way — and Europe’s way — that there is no way they can be dealt with. So, let’s pump up the fear of war and nuclear holocaust, let’s frighten the herds into fearful submission, let’s give everybody a good excuse when they see the tanks rolling and the troops marching through the streets, let’s crank up the security and lock everything down now because soon enough, at a moment TPTB probably know within a week or two, this whole illusion of BAU is going to come crashing down and that’s the fundamental truth that MUST be hidden from the masses until the moment it happens.

Northwest, you seem to have veered off the path when you say Russia needs to create fear. Too much US MSM, I think. That is the psychopathic playground of America and the West.

Russia is/was comfortable. It has enough resources and doesn’t need the West. The West needs it’s resources. Russia, China and Iran have locked up most of the extra oil and natural gas, minerals, etc., still available as other countries run dry of those resources. Doesn’t that seem like the real reason for war? They cannot get them by any other means except to pay what Russia, China and Iran want. That is not acceptable to the Empire.

Keep in mind that the West is now run by seriously psychopathic people who believe that a nuclear war is survivable. At least for the elite. With that mindset, a nuke exchange will be inevitable. Wait and see.

The crash is close and they know that they have maybe a year or two to get this war started or it is truly over for the West and the Empire and their power. A multi-polar world is not acceptable to them. We shall see.

I think that statement should be amended to “Keep in mind that the WORLD is now run…”

Makati1 — There isn’t a nation on earth past or present that hasn’t had to deal with restive populations. If you ever read “The Prince” by Machiavelli, then you’ll know that beating the drums of war and causing the populace to feel the threat and fear of war is one of the tried and true methods of subduing the population — works every time — not long term, but it has its short term uses. If you think Russia is golden and without many serious structural and ethnic problems that threaten to erupt if the Russian government withdraws the freebies, you need to seriously think about it again. Russia is a far flung empire composed of formerly conquered lands occupied by various ethnicities all of whom have been more or less okay with belonging to the Russian group of former countries, but when trouble ignites, and it will, Russia is as vulnerable to internal strife or probably much more so than America. Europe of course will erupt like fire works and we see some of that starting up right now. You are obsessed with nuclear war, Makati1. Your assertion that “the elites” will be okay with a nuclear war that ruins planet earth and all cultural and historical treasures just because they have a bunker to sit it out in is truly, pathetically absurd. That line of “reasoning” is illogical. There will of course be war and who knows maybe some nukes will fly — I doubt it, but maybe. More likely, when the shit really starts to hit the fan, America will be fully occupied with internal strife and strife along its borders, as will Russia and China. Keeping their own regional peace and defeating insurrections and trying to reestablish some kind of local order will be the top priority, not going around the world to start nuclear wars that would only result in total destruction of everything.

Thank God, NR, for the usual reason in the face of sci-fi nuk fantasy and the Russia, China, and Iran Nirvana puk.

Northwest, your idea of absurd is their idea of ok. Look close and see what is already being, or has been, destroyed by their greed and list for more power.

What is left of the cradle of Civilization, the ME? The remains of the Persian Empire or even Egypt is being destroyed. As is the Euphrates Valley. WW2 destroyed most of Europe’s historic remains, those that survived WW1. Ask the Vietnamese what is left of their country. The Koreans, Japanese, etc.

And don’t forget that a few well placed nukes will NOT destroy everything. All it would take in the US is one on NYC and on on DC. No great loss to the rest of the world. As for Europe, The City of London would suffice. Another loss not missed.

Did I shock you? What about the other 5,000? Well, we will have to wait and see, won’t we. But keep in mind that the last gasp for a big Empire is war, and this is the first time it has happened in a nuclear armed world.

If a war breaks out, Russia is at a distinct disadvantage. If the war was fought conventionally, Russia would come out the loser (though I can hardly see how it would ever be “conquered.”) So Russia will have no choice but to fight asymmetrically. As such, I would suggest that it will start by using nukes on carrier groups and the NATO military targets that surround Russia. Of course, this would invite retaliation, and NATO would use nukes on Russian military targets. But since “winning” would require US troops being sent across the ponds, this asymmetrical warfare would be to Russia’s advantage. Once those nukes were finished flying, it would be a big step to start nuking civilian populations – for either side. And completely unnecessary, since the war would be unwinnable at that point. Russia could also inflict heavy damage on ME OPEC oil facilities. This would bring the EU to its knees, and actually help Russian markets. If the US decided to use ICBM’s against Russian oil production, the same could be done against the US. So, in my estimation (a non-military guy located in the nether regions of Canada, maybe not your “go to” guy for military analysis), nukes would be used early in a completely unwinnable war, but it’s unlikely civilian populations would be targeted.

MK, any release of any amount of Nuk WMD will cause a catastrophic bifurcation of our BAU system leading to collapse of vital distribution, production, and command and control systems leaving the vast majority of the global population hungry and cold. There is little appreciation of how risky our systematic situation is mainly because the world is run by cornucopian techno exceptionalists. We are so close to losing everything and stupidly playing the geopolitical games we are playing. Russia, Europe, and the US are all guilty of wrong doing in Ukr. It is bad enough we are in a Mega Predicament of multiple reinforcing and converging predicaments that circle like Blake swans as short mentioned a few comments ago. We simply cannot have any kind of significant war. These small proxy war are ok. They even stimulate demand in a unholy way. “ANY” kind of war between Russia proper, Europe, China, and the US is disaster. These are all critical nodes in the global system. These are all heavily armed powers with many and diverse WMD’s. Basically we are playing Russian roulette at the moment especially in Eastern Europe. If we do not pull back from the brink by fall this may degenerate into a very ugly affair. If Europe experiences an energy crisis this winter BAU globalism will not survive. Markets will crash and a worldwide depression will be instant and it will be accompanied by food and liquid fuel shortages which will be the end of any hope of reboot of BAU globalism. We are at the cusp of a tipping point and the War Pigs are arrogantly playing war games. This when the majority of the world population is slipping into a slow motion collapse. It is easy for the War Pigs to play their games because they are comfortable in their Ponzi scheme of debt parasitically sucking and transferring wealth and concentrating the wealth with the global 1%’ers. This game will end badly just wait and see.

Davy, you can “bifurcate” all you want. Again you paint the world with a wide brush, assuming that a collapse of international trade would be as damaging to all other countries as it would to the West. There are many countries that would hardly notice the loss. It might actually improve the situation in some countries that are plagued by their foreign Western overlords who would not be able to maintain that control.

And a depression is NOT the end of the world. It happened in the 30s in the US and most people just went back to the farm. It was/is painted as a big disaster because the bubble burst and many ‘rich’ people lost their paper wealth.

I recently traveled through some more of the Ps countryside, and my impression is that many of them would not even notice a world depression. Or, if they did, they would just go back to the farm and adjust. The West can no longer do that. a world wide depression would devastate most of the West and the major wannabee countries like Japan, Australia, etc.

I guess time will tell who is correct.
