War planes from a U.S-led coalition carried out overnight strikes on oil-producing areas in an Islamic State-held part of eastern Syria, a group monitoring the war said on Thursday, after Britain said it had started raids for the first time.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights did not identify the war planes as British but said coalition jets launched raids on Jafra, Tanak and al-Omar areas in Deir al-Zor province.
The British Ministry of Defence said on its Twitter feed that British jets had hit al-Omar oil fields as part of the campaign against Islamic State.
The Observatory, which tracks the conflict using sources on the ground, said there were so far no details about any casualties.

Yep, bomb the country’s infra structure and future income rather then the truck convoys or just close off the border to Turkey. Typical of the insane empire.
Davy on Thu, 3rd Dec 2015 7:03 am
Makster is so naive. Russia is leveling the country and he chooses to deny it could be. I mean his Russia is with love and peace. How could they actually be destroying a country? Mak’s agenda is not capable of comprehending this. Mak thinks only the evil empire can do this. I am laughing and enjoying his ignorance or deceit. It is probably both.

The Turks have been buying up black market oil and the proceeds have provided ISSI with funding. The press loves to demonize the Russians, but the reality is that it is Turkey (an ally of the U.S.) that enables ISSI to flourish.

Just think if those pictures were your home? I know what I would do, or would want to do if I were Syrian.

Davy is so delirious, his feeble exceptionalist American mind blames Russia for Syria’s destruction. It is your country, the terrorist USA, and its allies that has been trying to destroy Syria for five years, fool. Russia is attempting to save Syrians from the foreign mercenary terrorists that the terrorist USA and its allies have trained, armed, financed, and equip. Russia is LEGALLY defending the LEGITIMATE Syrian government in its fight against foreign terrorists in full accordance to INTERNATIONAL LAW and SYRIAN LAW. The USA and its terrorist allies from NATO and the GCC are committing war crimes, crimes against peace, and crimes against humanity.
Obama must go! Erdogan must go! The American regime needs to be changed and all American war criminals should be tried in an international court.
Only a delusional American exceptionalist could compare Russia’s actions in Syria with those of the terrorist US government and its paid terrorist proxies. That is, only Davy, the board’s fool would attempt to sell something so far from the truth.
Davy is a LYING FOOL!

Thinking about: which oil infrastructure is Putin bombing: Syrian or Iraq? Makes sense for him to take advantage of the situation and destroy as much of the production capability of anyone (except Syria, of course) that competes with Russian oil sales, doesn’t it?

Being the apparent centralized transit hub for a number of proposed oil and gas pipelines between central Asian, Russian, and Gulf Arab countries and Europe, does Erdogon aspire to reestablish a lesser rendition of the Ottomon Empire? Playing along with ISIS may be more than a short term money making operation. Opinions?
twocats on Thu, 3rd Dec 2015 10:50 am
Yes Tom, I’ve been reading analysis since 2004 on that Turkey envisions itself as a rising power regionally – a link between the East and West, an energy hub, etc. Erdogan has been central in implementing that vision.

here’s a goood example of a historical overview (Stratfor/CIA) plucked randomly from web.

Apparently, this was 4 British Tornados that illegally attacked a couple of closed wells in Syrian territory that were reported in October as non operational. No damage was done to ISIS in this operation.
This was just the wanton destruction of the Syrian government’s infrastructure, just like the illegal American bombing of electricity and water plants in Aleppo which were condemned by UNICEF. These are war crimes according to international law. The Americans and its terrorist allies are in a hurry to bomb Aleppo’s and Syria’s infrastructure before the Syrian Army retakes the city and other regions.
I, personally, think that every straight brick and moving object in terrorist occupied territories being used by the terrorists fighting against the legitimate Syrian government and all their allies should be shot or bombed. That includes every truck in the area, the drivers, oil wells, storage tanks, roads, and what not. It is important to keep the terrorists, Turkey, and the rest of their sponsors from profiting from their mischief. A heavy cost must be extracted for their crimes.
The Syrian Army, Russian Air Force, and their allies must do whatever it takes to destroy its enemies militarily, and their governments must do as much diplomatically, politically, and economically.

It’s difficult trying to understand what is actually going on through the noise of partisanship and the natural censoring that takes place in every human conflict.
But standing far enough back you can make out some patterns. One is the ambition of Ergodan, the Turkish president. It is very hard for me to dimiss his likely sympathy with IS since he is trying his best to Islamasize Turkey and end almost 100 years of secularization. That makes it easy to believe that he, and his family, are enabling IS by helping them to move oil for them. Turkey’s shooting down of a Russian military plane seems to demonstrate their stupidity. I just finished re-reading “Seven Pillars of Wisdom” 30 some years after my first effort. Lawrence repeatedly called the Turkish military “stupid”. That seems to have not changed.
Putin seems to be engaged in his typical cynical moves to support the Assad government. Putin wishes he could be as brutal as Assad has been. His naivate seems to have paid off in the bombing of a Russian civilian aircraft.
Saudi Arabia is the devil’s workshop. They have, and continue to, encourage the most extreme forms of Islam. Not necessarily bad if the world was still as it was in 800 AD. However since the middle east has been battered and abused by it’s excessive quantity of petroleum per capita and absolutely no, none whatever, experience with government beyond the tribal level the advocacy of an extremist religion is an aphrodesiac of violence to the downtrodden who find themselves in a cargo cult situation: If they are the chosen of God why do these other, undeserving ones have our stuff?
The US? I admit some predjudice. I think Obama is trying very hard to avoid the traditional imperialistic approach to dealing with the mideast. but he is surrounded with advisors who know nothing else and a military who has only one song, ever since Vietnam: the use of overwhelming force.
Is there any path available in the middle east for a peaceful, stable future? Probably not until the oil is so depleted that no outside forces care any more. At that point they can go back to squabbling amongst themselves for the odd oasis and sealing camels from each other.
penury on Thu, 3rd Dec 2015 12:39 pm
Just for giggles there was a report (unverified) that Turkey claims they cannot police their own border and are requesting NATO troops as border guards. And yes the U.S. is defending Ankara against the Russian charges of oil smuggling,
JuanP on Thu, 3rd Dec 2015 1:58 pm
Jjh “His naivate seems to have paid off in the bombing of a Russian civilian aircraft.” I don’t consider Putin naive at all. He knew there would be costs. This could even possibly have been a Russian false flag operation. I am not saying it was at al, I haven’t seen any proof or indication of that. But I wouldn’t put it past them to copy that from the USA.
The downing of the Russian bomber was at least provoked by Russia, too, IMO. Putin knew he was reducing Erdogan’s income and influence, and it was obvious Erdogan was furious and would strike back. Sending those bombers so close to the Turkish border without an escort to bomb Turkish terrorists, oil, and supplies after providing the USA the flights’ schedule was begging for the Turks to take them down. And the foolish Turks obliged.
Now Russia has deployed their best anti air missiles in Syria and increased Russia’s bombing campaign along the Turkish border while Turkey looks like a criminal aggressor and is revealed to the world as a nation openly sponsoring and financing terrorism. Just what Putin wanted. Putin’s job approval and popularity are at an all time high in Russia and the world according to the most recent polls, including in Syria.
I consider your assessment of the USA realistic, not prejudiced, so your prejudice, if there is any, doesn’t blind you from the truth.
Anonymous on Thu, 3rd Dec 2015 3:40 pm
The US and its ‘allies’ (partners in crime really), are not bombing something called ‘ISIS’ not matter what Reuters or American Propaganda(AP) claim. The minute the Syrian Arab Army and its allies are on the verge of retaking Syrias’ modest oil producing areas and facilities, and liberating them from US control, expect to see a flurry of US directed air attacks that destroy as much fixed(oil)infrastructure as possible. So long as the americans feel that its ‘ISIS’ proxy army can still ‘win’, those particular facilities will remain basically untouched.
However it should be noted that the US destroys as much Syrian(non-oil) infrastructure as possible. And of course, its ‘ISIS’ proxies have been trained to do the same.
Seeing as how totally vulnerable, and you know, flammable and explosive oil facilities are, especially to explody things like…bombs and missiles. Its no wonder people are asking how all the alleged ‘coalition’ airstrikes are managing to inflict so little damage after all these press releases, I mean time.

makati1 on Thu, 3rd Dec 2015 7:39 pm
Rockman, I didn’t see any claim that those were Russian planes bombing the oil fields. They were likely British.
I doubt that Putin is worried about the little bit of oil Syria could produce after the dust settles. Putin wants to build a pipeline across Syria. THAT is what this is all about, not Syrian oil.
jjhman on Thu, 3rd Dec 2015 9:05 pm
This repeating meme that the US is somehow supporting ISIS has to be the most bizarre expression of irrational hatred I have ever seen outside of the Republican party primary campaign.
Yes, yes, the US likes cheap oil and irrationally supports the KSA dictatorship. But even the Bush adminitration really believed that they could create an open, democratic government in Iraq.
Stupid is different than evil.
makati1 on Thu, 3rd Dec 2015 10:00 pm
jjhman, the Empire is certainly supporting ISIS and all of the other ‘terrorists’ in Syria and Iraq. After all, the US is the biggest terrorist organization in the world, bar none. It makes Stalin’s U.S.S.R. or Hitler’s concentration camps seem like the Garden of Eden by comparison.
Some 30 million plus killed and many times that ruined in the last 50 years. Whole countries decimated and in chaos because of US meddling and wars of plunder, continuing to this day in places all over the world. Soon, being an American will mean not ever leaving the 50 states for fear of your life, not that your police state will let you travel … LOL.
Davy on Fri, 4th Dec 2015 1:14 am
Mak your explanation is extremist as usual and your buddies will likely come to your defense in hyper sensitivity to my hyper sensitivity. ISIS is a complex story of support and indirect support. They are a military tool against similar terrorism by the opponents. The opponents like Russia are supporting a terrorist Assad. Shia’s are terroristic too with their own groups. What is a terror group? Is that your determination or mine? Who is right?
Comparing the US to Stalin is a reach and if there would not have been a Stalin their likely would not have been a cold war with future US medaling. Stalin cursed the world. How about that Mak? It is all Stalin’s fault. Let’s take that reductionism all the way back to the friggen monkey that got out of the tree and started walking on the plains. Are we not rewriting history you and me?
Your buddies will come to your aid with the usual defenses. Who is right? It then becomes a question of who can bad mouth the other more. It finally deteriorates down into the mud. If we were at the bar it would end up in a fist fight, knives, and or guns. Why drag us all into the mud?
I am sure my self-appointed editor will come on later to discredit and diminish what I said. Let me rephrase that editors (plural). I am a minority that gets gang banged. What is the point of all this? Does it make you happy to see conflict on the board? Yesterday was a shining example of an out of control board. It is started by comments like you made above.
I am not going to back down. I do not care if I am gang banged and the personal insults will be met with personal insults. Where does that lead? Nowhere.

Here is another wild angle to Buffalo Bill’s Wild West show we call Syria. All the more reason to think diplomacy soon or something is going to ignite a cauldron of conflict from every direction that will be so swift and chaotic as to be more of a wild west shootout than a modern military action. This is the type of shootout that could very easily go global with all the consequences.
BTW, Zero Hedge is a dedicated anti-American site for both economic and geopolitical news. It is seriously pro-Russian. I read it daily and find it an excellent counterbalance to main stream news.

“I am not going to back down. I do not care if I am gang banged and the personal insults will be met with personal insults. Where does that lead? Nowhere.”
The only thing that matters in the end Davy, is the truth. Something that you are too blind, or too egotistical to see.
Keep being the enabler Davy. You are part of the problem buddy, not a part of the solution. You and your kind are responsible for the downfall of America. You are your own worst enemy.
Boat on Sat, 5th Dec 2015 3:58 am
GregT,
LOL Just listen to yourself. Mr large carbon footprint hypocrite. Your Country marches on lock step with Britain, France, UK and US when it comes to foreign policy. What ever Canada does is just as much your personal responsibility as any body elses in any of those countries. You don’t get to pick and choose. Your a citizen so you get any bad that comes from your country or allies. Grow up.
So what is it you have there Mr GregT that separates you from being an enabler. Do you let people drive? Shop? You an enabler? Me thinks you have a drug problem. You are part of modern society. You are nothing special. You have done more than your fair share to kill off the planet. Now………say your sorry. Lol

Davy on Sat, 5th Dec 2015 7:26 am
Poor widdly Greg (oops I just said that) double lol!! Greg, if you are going to insult me and I might add cowardly in your gang bang orgies, I will insult you back. I am here enough to be a constant thorn in your anti-American tabloid agenda. I stand by my referenced quote above. You do not have a lock on the truth. None of us know the truth. We can try to get closer and we should do that together with respect and with a code of conduct. That is something you anti-Americans are unable to do because first you’re in a majority and secondly because you are consumed with hate and resentment.
I have routinely said all it takes for all of us is moderation. Your facts are facts but it is the delivery of those facts in a distorted one sided fashion that sets a tone of a tabloid agenda. Nowhere is this as bad as with Makster but you are close Greg when you get hot and bothered. So fock off Greg and ignore me and I will ignore you. I have chosen to discredit and diminish the Makster. He is the reason this board is out of control and he loves it. Even you have asked him to moderate and he refuses. I do not object to you doing the same with Boater. If you chose to fight me I will treat you as the enemy and attack you whenever necessary. If that is what you want then keep up with your attacks.
GregT on Sat, 5th Dec 2015 3:51 pm

You’re not an idiot. You should know better.
