U.S. military sues Tokyo plant over nuclear disaster
Members of the U.S. military who were tasked with helping Japan with the clean-up and recovery from its 2011 nuclear power leak are now suing, claiming the company lied and downplayed dangers.
The case, which was initially filed with nine plaintiffs in December, has expanded to include 26 — and 100 more are expected to join the suit in the coming weeks, the Stars and Stripes reported. The revised complaint was filed in U.S. District Court in California, Agence France-Presse reported. Plaintiffs are both active duty and retired sailors and Marines, along with their dependents.
They seek $2 billion from Tokyo Electric Power Co., AFP says.
They claim a range of health problems from the clean-up. AFP says plaintiffs are suffering from headaches, bleeding, thyroid problems, cancer and tumors.
The Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant was compromised in March 2011 after an earthquake and tsunami struck the eastern coast of Japan. An estimated 15,991 people died, and 2,688 are still missing, AFP reports.

Good luck with that! TEPCO is broke! They are basically suing the Japanese government and nothing is going to come of that either. Why were they even in a sovereign country? Oh! Well, that’s the cost of serving the Empire. Early death by cancer. Bet they thought they were just on an all expense paid vacation in Japan. lol.

RoFL too true! If I were the Japanese gov’t I would simply inform the US occupation forces that Japan is not liable for anything that happens to military occupation personal as a result of natural disasters, ie Earthquakes, accidental irradiation etc. Kind of how US forces have total immunity when they commit crimes that violate Japanese law, Japan should thus be immune form frivolous amerikan ambulance chasers.
But hey, tell them they can go after GE for a payout, its there plant after….

TEPCO and the government of Japan were not forthcoming with honest information at the time of the nuclear disaster and can not be trusted now to provide accurate information to the people of Japan and the world. This nuclear disaster continues today with no end in sight.

if these guys were on a military ship, the ship would have extensive radiation monitoring. so the US military and the ship captain know whats going on, they know the sailors are being poisoned while it happens. So why sue Tepco you could just as easily sue the US gov’t. oh wait a minnit, no they can’t. so they are suing the only target that they CAN sue, which is the japanese gov’t.
