Trump Likely to Pick Former Texas Gov. Rick Perry for Energy Secretary

During an infamous campaign moment, Perry forgot the name of the Energy Department when listing three federal agencies he would abolish as president.

President-elect Donald Trump is reportedly set to name former Texas Gov. Rick Perry as secretary of the Energy Department.

Perry, who described the president-elect as both a “barking carnival act” and “a cancer on conservatism” when the two were rivals for the GOP nomination last year, joined Trump on Monday for 90 minutes in the New York City penthouse being used as transition headquarters, according to ABC and NBC news. While in the Trump Tower lobby, Perry waved a thumbs-up but ignored reporters, including one asking whether he still wanted to shut down the Department of Energy.

During a 2011 debate for his first presidential run, Perry failed in his attempt to recall the three federal agencies he would abolish as president.

“It’s three agencies of government, when I get there, that are gone – Commerce, Education and the, um, what’s the third one there? Let’s see,” he said, before finally settling on, “Oops.”

Before he bowed out of two GOP presidential primaries, Perry had never lost an election. He grew up in tiny Paint Creek, a West Texas stone’s throw from the Permian Basin’s crude bounty. And he represented that region – as a Democrat – in the Texas House of Representatives before switching parties and gliding to victory as Texas Agriculture Commissioner, lieutenant governor and finally, the longest-serving governor in Texas history.

During his tenure, the city of Andrews, Texas, became home to the controversial nuclear waste site owned by Waste Control Specialists. Governor at the time, Perry nominated most of the commissioners who approved the contract and endured criticism for accepting $250,000 in 2008 campaign cash from WCS’ owner, the late Dallas billionaire Harold Simmons.

While the Interior Department regulates offshore drilling and operations on federal lands, the Energy Department manages research, technology and nuclear clean-up.

Environmentalists have been quick to respond.

Benjamin Schreiber, director at Friends of the Earth Climate and Energy, said Perry has conflicts of interest that should disqualify him for leading the department.

“Perry is on the payroll of the company that attacked Indigenous people in an effort to forcibly construct the Dakota Access Pipeline. Like his new boss, Governor Perry will surely mine his position for as much personal gain as he can find,” Schreiber said in a news statement.

Washington runs America just like U.K. ran colonial India; like a resource to be exploited. America no longer has a foreign economic empire to exploit so now the tools of oppression have come home.

America is a larger oil importer that hopes for higher oil prices; why? Because that’s one of the few ways Wall Street can make any money. Think about it.

OK…looks like the Rockman has to the dubious “honor” of being the resident RP expert. LOL.

Some simple facts: RP had been the longest serving Texas gov. IMHO primarily because he did a good job of not pissing off too many folks as opposed to pleasing a lot of the electorate. Also understand that the Texas gov is not nearly as powerful/influential as those in other states. Many consider the Lt. Gov as powerful (and more powerful in some circumstances) then the gov:

The Lieutenant Governor is a the President of the Senate. His primary powers lie in the office’s authority and influence in the legislature. The Lieutenant Governor appoints the committees of the Senate, a considerable power since committees generally control specific policy areas, and also assign bills to specific Senate committees. Generally, the various committees have responsibility over specific areas of public policy. But, the rules for assignment to committee are weak enough that they give the Lieutenant Governor considerable discretion in assigning bills to committee.

The Lieutenant Governor also casts the deciding vote in case of a tie, and serves as chairman of the Legislative Budget Board and the Legislative Council. He or she is vice-chairman of the Legislative Audit Committee and the Legislative Education Board, and when the Legislative Redistricting Board convenes (if the legislature is unable to approve a redistricting plan for both houses), the Lieutenant Governor serves as one of the five members. These official roles, coupled with the legislative influence of the office, make the Lieutenant Governorship significantly different from the office that seems a natural comparison. The Lieutenant Governor has exerted growing influence in lawmaking and in administration and public policy since World War II.

Now the Department of Energy. Despite the name the SecEn has very little interaction with the exploration, production, importing, refining, regulations and consumption of fossil fuels. In that sense having been the gov of the largest fossil fuel producing doesn’t really add much useful experience in RP’s resume IMHO. Which may explain his rediculous campaign pledge to do away with the DOE. An especially foolish position given the DOE’s involvement in the nuclear power industry. Many feel the DOE has not been a very good shepard of this ernergy source. I wish I could say I had a lot of faith in RP making needed changes. But given his rather dismissive attitude in the past when it comes to dealing with the handling of nuclear waste the environmentallists should probably prepare themselves for 4 really f*cking bad years. LOL.

“…environmentallists should probably prepare themselves for 4 really f*cking bad years.” But to be fair the last 8 years haven’t given those folks in the US much to be very happy about:

    US oil production increased 65%
    US NG production increased 35%
US coal exports reached a record high in 2012
    US CO2 production nearly flat
US additional spent nuclear fuel: 18,000 tons

Holy fuck is it every entertaining watching the hard core liberals freakout about all of Trumps retard appointees. Trump ain’t the problem, he’s a symptom. Late stage symptom.

Trump shuns scientists, taps ‘Dancing with the Stars’ contestant to oversee nuclear weapons

“The current head of the Department of Energy is Dr. Ernest Moniz, a former Professor of Physics and Engineering Systems at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In fact, four out of the last five heads of the Department of Energy were world-renowned and/or Nobel Prize-winning scientists with a deep understanding of physics and nuclear weapons.

Rick Perry’s last job was as a contestant on Dancing with the Stars. As the New York Times notes, Perry is a curious pick for such a serious role.”

Remember, if The Donald is Fred Astaire then Rick Perry is Ginger Rogers. He has to follow his lead backwards in high heels. Hopefully, he can remember the steps. If not, something might go Bang!
