Saudi Arabia said it arrested several “troublemakers” in its oil-rich Eastern Province on Friday while an activist said police wounded and detained protestors there after a peaceful demonstration.
Among those arrested was Mohamed al-Shakhouri, one of 23 people wanted by the security forces, the official Saudi Press Agency quoted an Interior Ministry spokesman as saying.
The activist, who said he witnessed the unrest but declined to be named for fear of retaliation from the authorities, told Reuters that protestors marched for three hours in Qatif city. Some minority Shi’ite Muslims in the area complain of official neglect and discrimination, which the government denies.
“During the march there was no police presence and when it was over the armoured vehicles started entering the city, and that is when the protesters began to block roads with flaming tyres and throw Molotov cocktails,” he said.
Police on the armoured vehicles then started shooting at the protesters in the early hours of Friday, injuring around 14 including Shakhouri who was arrested, the activist said.
Mansour al-Turki, the Interior Ministry spokesman, told Reuters the gathering did not exceed 300 people and said the arrests of the “troublemakers” had nothing to do with the gathering, which occurred in a different part of the city.
“The troublemakers blocked the roads and the police received many calls of complaint. There was no live firing and there weren’t any injuries. Some were arrested and they will be investigated,” he said.
Most of the country’s Shi’ites live in the Eastern Province and some complain their religious ceremonies are banned or interfered with by Sunni authorities, and that they lack opportunities for work and education.
The government has pointed to efforts to include Shi’ites in a “national dialogue” started by King Abdullah last decade, the appointment of Shi’ites to an advisory Shoura Council and a relaxation of policy to allow them more freedom to worship.
It views protests among its Shi’ite minority in the context of tensions with Shi’ite power and regional rival Iran, which it accuses of fomenting the unrest. It says it has only used force when its security forces have been physically attacked.
Early this month, prominent Shi’ite cleric Nimr al-Nimr, wanted for “sedition”, was arrested after being shot in the leg by police in an exchange of fire, prompting demonstrations.
In mid-July, Saudi security forces shot and killed a man who was among a group that opened fire and hurled a fire-bomb at a police station in the province, while four members of the security forces were wounded in a separate attack by masked gunmen on motor-bikes who fired at two patrols, according to official media.

In SA, they are ‘troublemakers’, ie target practice, but in Syria, they are ‘rebels’ and ‘freedom figthers, or even ‘opposition’.

The equations are now:
Sunni=good guy
Shia=deep shi’it
Reason: Iran as the proxy for the last bastions against the NWO, Russia and China, is shia and hence needs to be destroyed. And the Sunni side of islam is being setup against the Shia block. Knowing the high Clouseau quality of the snor tanks in Washington, it is probably going to be another desaster for the kik.., I mean the Americans.

I’m going to tell the truth. The Middle East (ME), which should and does include Israel, Pakistan, India, and any country within a 900 miles of ME, is the arm pit of the world. Made that way from past and present invaders for resources.
We, the US could care less about the ME, Africa for that matter too. But, hey they all have oil, or are barriers to US flow of oil.
The US war machine is the cause of terrorism, manufactured by the oil cartels, US corporations. 911 was an inside job.
The US has been at war ever since creating genocide on the natives.
There is no profit in peace, and anyone who thinks WWIII is a BS, think again.
It’s time to remove the war mongers from this planet. As Patty Smith says, people have the power. So wake up people.

The Us of A is the world’s largest terrorist group, bar none, including their masters, the Israelis. America was founded with blood, grew on the bodies of natives and then spread out to the rest of the world. Better it had never existed.

I agree rick, the site seems to be really slow of late.

Yes, too slow! I sometimes give up in frustration waiting for it just to come up. Then commenting is too slow. I think they are trying to cram too many articles on the server per day. Most of what I read lately has little to do with Peak Oil, unless it is an ad from Big Petro or Some investment firm looking for suckers.
But then….look at the side bar of their advertisers…3 out of five are pushing oil/natural gas corporations, one is a vacation ad (ok) and a recycling cooking oil ad (ok).

Keep on the Sunni side, always on the Sunni side,
Keep on the Sunni side of life;
It will help us ev’ry day, it will brighten all the way,
If we keep on the Sunni side of life.

The thing I like about this site is its impartiality. There is an attempt to present various viewpoints. You can post here without a three day gap, while “awaiting moderation.” Traffic affects velocity on a website. Let’s hope the sluggishness is due to high volume.
I appreciate and value the information and commentary on this site. It’s free.
I’d have to walk a mile in their shoes before I’d be qualified to complain.
But, getting back to the point, this whole thing is just more proof of the intervention in and manipulation of the political/economic moment at hand. We see the classic division into opposing sides, another version of the phoney left/right paradigm, black/white, Jew/Christian, etc. We know this is manufactured and manipulated into existence because these “opposing” groups have the same interests. There is no natural difference between them.
Ends are invented to justify the means applied. That’s the long and short of how this works.
