Russia cut off natural gas to NATO members Poland and Bulgaria on Wednesday and threatened to do the same to other countries, dramatically escalating its standoff with the West over the war in Ukraine. European leaders decried the move as “blackmail.”
A day after the U.S. and other Western allies vowed to speed more and heavier weapons to Ukraine, the Kremlin used its most essential export as leverage against two of Kyiv’s staunch backers. Gas prices in Europe shot up on the news.
The tactic could eventually force targeted nations to resort to gas rationing and could deal another blow to economies suffering from rising prices. At the same time, it could deprive Russia of badly needed income to fund its war effort.
Western leaders and analysts portrayed the move by the Kremlin as a bid to both punish and divide the allies so as to undermine their united support for Ukraine.
Poland has been a major gateway for the delivery of weapons to Ukraine and confirmed this week that it is sending the country tanks. It has also been a vocal proponent of sanctions against the Kremlin.

I thought it is because Poland refuses to pay in roubles. So Poland can shop elsewhere for gas.

It seems like a small punishment towards NATO for their meddling and aid in the special military operation. Russia should have done this to Germany instead. That would raise more than a few eyebrows.

As to paying in rubles it seems a lot of large players a caving in and making their gazprombank accounts.

Oh yes: all Russian acts are a “surprise.” That will include the coming nuclear war which is being engineered by the United States.

Doesn’t look good for Vlad. Not only is US shipping tons of money and equipment, whole of europe is slowly joining in. A blitzkrieg of 4 weeks taking kiev and disposing of the pres turns into a bogged down clusterfuck.
Vlad should start thinking about an exit strategy. The damage to the russian economy will be enormous.

“Vlad should start thinking about an exit strategy. The damage to the Russian economy will be enormous.”
There is no exit strategy, we’re in WW3. The US is in the Thucydides trap, for them, it is now or never.

Usually a world war is won by that party that enters last and that would be China.
Vlad has cut off fuel to Poland and Bulgaria, the Germans already said they could be next. That means the entire economy goes broke.
Now, how do you think the European population is going to respond? In Weimar, at least they had fuel.lol
Expect the rise of the Right and NATO becoming very unpopular. The Right can play the party of peace, reason and moderation. They can say they have the recipe of how to get out of the economic misery, and that is striking a deal with Russia.
Yes, Russia will lose its frozen assets, but the US is losing the dollar reserve currency status. And they are going to lose Europe.
The left just lost its major asset: an attractive working, prosperous economy that acted like a magnet to the rest of the world. The population is going to blame America and NATO for their mishap.
Btw, what damage to the Russian economy? The ruble in rising and so are the prices for Russian commodities. What are you talking about. Russia will run a surplus once a gain and is buying gold by the boat load.
Even the BILD reporter Roepcke and Russia-hater (otherwise he didn’t have his job) admits that Ukraine is getting hammered:

Once the brunt of the Ukie army has been annihilated, Russia can do with Ukraine what it wants.
Russia’s goal is throwing the US out of Europa, just like the goal of China is to throw the US out of Asia.
Saudi-Arabia knpows what is happening and doesn’t want to end up in a losing coalition with the US and started talks with arch foe Iran.
Israel is diversifying towards the Yuan. The kikes!
The empire is toast.

If Russia does not take Ukraine or at the very least gets either the land corridor to Krim or a forced neutrality of the Ukraine it is likely they will perceive this as an end scenario – and as Putin has said: There is no future without Russia…

foolish people who want to sanction all russian oil dont know the fact that the country exports 7 million b/d of oil.
if we take that much oil out, for sure we will see $200/barrel which will 1st break us economy followed by the worlds economy.

After hitting record high diesel prices just a month ago, again that record is broken today when average national diesel prices hit $5.180 / gallon.
Even gasoline prices are staying around record high of $4.331 set on 2022-03-11.
Unless we move to alternatives like natgas, biofuels, electric, etc, we will see more and more records which hit many people hard the world over.
