Population Dynamics and Sustainable Development

Organized by the UN Population Fund (UNFPA), this International Workshop entitled “Population dynamics and sustainable development in CIS countries” will take place at the Parliamentary Centre of CIS Inter-Parliamentarian Assembly in St. Petersburg, Russia on 21 May 2014. The purpose of the meeting is to (1) present and discuss the ICPD beyond 2014 regional review and post 2015 development agenda and CIS countries; (2) present and discuss the outcome of Sixth International Parliamentarians’ Conference on the Implementation of the ICPD Programme of Action (IPCI/ICP); (3) discuss RH law model framework for CIS countries and (4) plan collaborative actions for 2014-2015.

Tatyana Haplichnik, who is Head of Coordination and Outreach at the Wittgenstein Centre for Demography and Global Human Capital (IIASA, VID/ÖAW, WU) will deliver a presentation on the main findings of the report “Population Trends and Policies in the UNECE Region: Outcomes, Policies and Possibilities“, which was authored by scientists from IIASA’s World Population Program in 2013.

Background

With the 20-year anniversary of the landmark International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) on the horizon, the UN General Assembly asked the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) to lead a global process aimed at taking stock of the progress that has been made in implementing the Programme of Action adopted by the ICPD in Cairo in 1994, and at identifying priorities for the future. In the region comprising Europe, Central Asia, North America and Israel, UNFPA, together with the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), initiated a comprehensive process of consultations with governments, civil society, academia, youth and parliamentarians to solicit their input and ideas for an updated population and development agenda for the 21st century. The World Population Program prepared this report at the request of the UNFPA.

We’ve been talking about this since the 60s. All talk, no action. We are now at the point that there will be a drastic cull in our populations, if not extinction.

“a comprehensive process of consultations with governments, civil society, academia, youth and parliamentarians to solicit their input and ideas for an updated population and development agenda for the 21st century.” isn’t going to make any difference.

A plan for population control, sustainable resource use, and environmental stewardship, might have made a difference 50 years ago, but it is far too late for that now.
