The basis for the training mission, per the press release, is to further “ongoing efforts to help sustain Ukraine’s defense and internal security operations. In particular, the training will help the Ukraine government develop its National Guard to conduct internal defense operations.”
As Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Victoria Nuland herself pointed out before Congress, the US does not have a defense treaty with Ukraine making the act of sending in troops to train Ukraine forces seemingly inappropriate if not openly provocative to Russia. Or maybe that’s the point?
The government in Kiev is struggling to maintain order and has been jailing journalists and others for opposing the draft and the continued war with separatists in the east. The government also faces an increasing threat from neofascist militias known as “volunteers” that it once empowered. The militias have become antagonistic of the government and threatened to overthrow it for failing to crush the separatists.
President Poroshenko’s attempts to consolidate power have been made easier by a wave of apparent suicides by former officials of overthrown President Viktor Yanukovich. Whether a weakened opposition is enough to help him fend off disaster remains to be seen as the Ukrainian economy poses just as much of a threat to his rule as the neofascist militias. Yesterday Ukraine’s finance minister warned that Ukraine could be forced into defaulting on its debts if there was not a restructuring soon.
Will US military involvement make the situation for Ukraine better or worse?

It is poor decisions like this that will likely lead us into the black hole of collapse. We all know a few advisors seem to always escalate to more. Russia will ratchet up their military activity and before long a stupid incident will likely escalate. This is truely bad news for any hope of good mitigation and adaptation policies for the bumpy descent.

This is not news, it was known and expected, it was only a matter of when, and now we have the date. The Russian government will retaliate quietly and asymmetrically, as they usually do. They have already said so oficially. Russia’s government said an American troop deployment and weapons sales to Ukraine would cause Russian retaliation against the USA.
IMO, the US government is purposefully escalating the conflict as part of their global policies aimed at someday ruling the whole world. Those guys in DC are frigging lunatics. I expect the USA-Russia War to continue building up and escalating for the foreseeable future.
I also expect new fronts to develop in The Stans and more problems in Georgia, too. The USA is losing in Ukraine, so building multiple fronts makes a lot of sense. We will surround Russia and China with failed, broken, collapsing neighbors. And, hopefully, someday we will succeed in our mental masturbation dreams of destroying and dividing Russia and China, too! USA, USA, USA!
If the USA can’t prevent the formation of an Eurasian strategic union from Lisbon to Beijing, through Moscow, its dreams of global hegemony are history. All the Middle East and Central Asia wars are about this. A united Eurasia would naturally become the largest power on the planet and the US government will not allow that to happen. Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Georgia, Syria, it is all the same game. It is the same game the US is playing in the Pacific with China.
I honestly don’t understand why Americans think other people want to be like them. They don’t want to be like you, they just want to be like they are and RICH like you. It was never about values or ideals, it’s about MONEY!
Fuck this shit!

Admittedly this is out of my area of expertise, so I’ll make the point “in my opinion”; The US has been sold down the river by a batch of psychopathic nut cases. The average Joe Six is not interested in controlling the world. He wants to go to the NASCAR races, and play with his bass boat. The lunatic fringe that has gained control in the US has done so on Joe’s ignorance, and bread and circuses. The bread is now getting stale, and the circus is soon going to be leaving town. Victoria, her NAZI hubby, and their ilk are going to find themselves at the end of some old farmers pitch fork leaving Dodge in a hurry. If the neo-lunatic fringe think that they can turn the US military on the US population, they are out of their minds. It ain’t going to happen. There are enough American left who remember the teachings of the founding fathers to ensure that this madness will come to an end. It is about time for Thomas Jefferson to come out of retirement!

What we need now is a crisis to discredit the thieves and pirates in DC that have hijacked this country. Once discredited an upset general public will be looking for a tree for lynching both figuratively and literally. The end days are near it will be exciting but not in a good way.

the US does have a treaty with Ukraine. It was signed when UA gave up their nukes in return for protection if invaded. Interestingly, the other signatory is Russia.
penury on Fri, 27th Mar 2015 12:27 pm
Short, I agree with the majority of what you say. However, where we differ is in turning the military on the population. We or rather they no longer need the military they have the local militarized police, the DHS thugs who would gladly become militarized, the recently armed Federal employees (i.e. Dept of Ag)and more. As far as V. Nuland and her husband ask yourself “Who do they work for? The answer will provide some idea of what our major problems are.
GregT on Fri, 27th Mar 2015 12:30 pm
The treaty that the US had with Ukraine, the Budapest Memorandum, clearly states:
That Russia, the U.S., and the UK, would “Refrain from using economic pressure on Ukraine in order to influence its politics.”
Nuland and the US State Department spent 5 billion dollars of US tax payers money to open up Ukraine to Western corporate interests.

The US State department is in direct violation of the Budapest Memorandum. The results of which were well understood ahead of time.

Russia is in direct DEFIANCE of what they agreed to do so I think You should look to WHO DEFIED ANY CONTRACT FIRST!!!!!!!!!! I also wonder why nobody remembers the Commitment by USA, the European Union and Russia to PROTECT Ukranine from any Countries of trying to take property from Ukraine!!!!!!!!! I guess this means everybody thinks it will be OK for RUSSIA to take Alaska back from USA????????? I think maybe people need to know the truth and facts before commenting about things they don’t know for sure or LIVE in the situation!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Rodger Olsen on Fri, 27th Mar 2015 1:15 pm
The Minsk agreement requires that all foreign troops be removed from Ukraine and that all of the militias be disbanded.
The US, however, instead of withdrawing the 600 troops we already admit to having in the country is adding 300 more.
The pentagon has also announced that our troops will be training and equipping two of the militant groups that are required to disband under the agreements.
This blatant violation of the cease fire agreements is, or course, no problem for the US. We will simply blame Russia for the failure of the cease fire and demand more sanctions. It is “the American way.”
LiveFreeOrDie1776 on Fri, 27th Mar 2015 1:28 pm
@GregT Poor analogy, Greg. In your scenario, did the US have thousands of troops stationed in Quebec helping the separatists?
@Rodger Olsen. A very well-known Russian troll, paid by the Russian government to conduct a disinformation campaign on news blogs.
Laughable is his assertion that the problem in Ukraine is the arrival of 290 US soldiers sent to assist the sovereign government of Ukraine in setting up a National Guard system to help Kiev get away from having to rely on “volunteer” battalions.
Yet, he’s not concerned about the approximately 9000 Russian troops and hundreds of Russian armored vehicles that are illegally operating inside sovereign Ukraine’s borders!
Mike on Fri, 27th Mar 2015 1:31 pm
Maybe it is the American way to protect like it has agreed to do and because
Russia continues to send Army equipment and Troops to Ukraine it is obligated and the UK is also obligated to do the same because RUSSIA is completely doing the apposite it agreed to do!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!The Budapest Memorandum on Security Assurances is a political agreement signed in Budapest, Hungary on 5 December 1994, providing security assurances by its signatories relating to Ukraine’s accession to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons. The Memorandum was originally signed by three nuclear powers, the Russian Federation, the United States of America, and the United Kingdom. China and France gave somewhat weaker individual assurances in separate documents.[1]
The memorandum included security assurances against threats or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of Ukraine as well as those of Belarus and Kazakhstan. As a result Ukraine gave up the world’s third largest nuclear weapons stockpile between 1994 and 1996,[2][3] of which Ukraine had physical though not operational control[citation needed]. The use of the weapons was dependent on Russian controlled electronic Permissive Action Links and the Russian command and control system.

For heaven’s sake they stole a huge chunk of the country, have uttered the most obvious lies regarding the past and present actions, yet people blame the US for the problem.
I have no sympathy for the aggressive military and financial actions of the US govt but with regard to all of the Russian aggression in Georgia, Ulraine and military flights (without radar on) over NATO territory Putin is acting like a madman and he’s being defended here. Are you nuts?

Here’s the difference and why all of you nay sayers are dead and dumb wrong. Ukraine WANTS repeat WANTS repeat WANTS US involvement. President Poroshenko’s been crying out for it since the moment he took office. He even came over here and begged for it last summer.
Here’s the other difference, homies. If you don’t stop Russia now, before it swallows up Ukraine, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, and then on to Finland…then there’ll be no way to stop it afterwards. And, domination is the Putin’s – and Russia’s – endgame. It’s always been that way.
So, we either strike while they’re still reletively weak, or they’ll march right over us.

Most of the Ukraine speaks Russian, writes in Russian and thinks like Russians. With modern warfare on the verge of reverting into an oxcart, and a catapult some one in Washington thinks we should go pick a fight with the Russians. Since we’ve already lost Detroit, Cleveland, and about 20 other major cities, maybe we should concentrate on saving Denver! In truth, there is absolutely nothing that the US needs from the Ukraine. Let Europe figure out its own natural gas problems, we’ve got plenty of our own to worry about. The Ukraine is just another 10 cent state to keep the proles occupied while their own house falls down around their ears.

The help by us with troops and I hope with tanks and drones and rockets will bring this war to quick end why??? Putin knows Europe is afraid look at the facts the Russians were going to build 50 new Airplanes state of the art they now we only do 12. This is the key Russia don’t want to lose tanks in the Ukraine if we bring in tanks and they start losing their tanks to our tanks and drones and rockets he will pull out their economy is in shambles it can’t replace the lose of their weapons. The way you beat Putin take him on and he will back down. If we had done this last year it would be over now but they were so afraid and that is what Putin counts on remember he will not use Nucelar weapons as it will destroy him right now he knows Europeans are afraid to take him on and NATO outnumbers Russia in weapons and men 10 to 1 so they should stand up to him and it will be over. They are backing down to him just like the Europeans backed down to Hitler and they still had war. Ted

If it is this Zero hedge article (below) then it does not say what you said it says. The house passed a resolution to send weapons. The only mention of troops is that troops are not not in the resolution. It’s blood thirsty commenters who are calling for troops (just so long as it’s not them). Know what this means as far as the Russians are concerned? How do you think they will respond when the weapons get into their next door neighbor hands? If it happens the Russians said they would respond. What do you think they will do? How would Americans respond if the Russian state passed a resolution to give a bunch of weapons to Mexico and Canada? I bet there would be a few emotional people then.
