Oil, Coal Seen as Winners With Donald Trump Victory

Public Policy

Donald Trump’s energy ideas are ‘basically the antithesis of the current administration’s,’ according to JBC… Donald Trump ’s surprise victory fanned expectations in the energy industry that he would clear the path for new pipelines, end U.S. participation in global climate change pacts and undo environmental regulations to boost American coal mining. The prospect that the president-elect would roll back years of Obama administration policies buoyed investors in fossil fuels companies Wednesday—while sending shares of top wind and solar power firms tumbling. The S&P 500 Energy Sector Index was up about 1.5% overall midday to 517.28. Scott Sheffield, chief executive of Pioneer Natural Resources Co., said Mr. Trump’s victory will perk up the country’s stagnant drilling boom by making it easier to build pipelines that unlock areas rich in oil and gas, such as the Marcellus Shale formation in Pennsylvania and Ohio. “His message about creating jobs is why […]

Good luck with that! We have dug up all the anthracite, and the bituminous is all that’s left. Soon we’ll be into the lignite.

Let’s see how much oil he finds in the US at $50 a barrel and below…

  2. mx on Thu, 10th Nov 2016 1:15 pm

Russia can now sell oil for $10 per barrel.
    Not gonna happen.

Trump will bring back $100 oil and a 5% GDP growth rate! And jobs! Like Revi says above, Good luck with that!

Why don’t we just start production of steam trains again? Or we could cut the national forests and add that to the Trump Train!

    Donald Trump’s energy ideas …”

    Oil-Qaeda juice is not energy.

    Got physics?

Do one of these (Awe Topsy Turvy).

We could mine coal and then ship it to the US-Mexico border and stack it up there to build a wall with Mexico.

    Cheers!

The same experts who predicted a Hillary win are now going to explain “Trumps” energy plans? Take this information to the bank, you need to0 buy what they are recommending. STAT

My feeling is that all this spending(building fence, coal extraction, infrastructure spending) will generated hyperinflation.

This is will probably bring oil to 100$ barrel because most conventional oil is depleted. All the oil with really high net energy returned ( conventional oil) toward society is gone.

And bring back the 1977 Lincoln Continental Mark V,
with the ten foot long hood, the moonroof, double fuel
tanks, 8-track, and the 460 cubic inch V8.

It’s part of the first 100 days Trump platform.
And outlaw those ugly Prius cars.

Go Speed, they are bringing back a big Continental but not one that big.

    Trump And Climate

“I don’t want to hear about that pointless Paris Agreement. Humans aren’t going to do anything significant about the climate. That’s a popular human delusion, at least among those who worry about the environment. And now we know for sure because Tony Blair told us so.

Hell, Trump may single-handedly decrease global CO2 emissions significantly by igniting an international trade war. That would help bring down our very fragile global economy. Thus Trump may inadvertently do us a service. That’s the good news.”

And now let’s try some facts:

The US produced more coal in 2010 (during President Obama’s SECOND TERM) the ever before in history.

According to those right wing radicals with the Sierra Club 40% of US coal production comes from US govt leases. Leases controlled by President Obama’s administration.

US coal exports during administration of the last three presidents: lowest during that of Presidernt Bush, highest during that of President Clinton with President Obama matching that of President Clinton at the end of 2011. See the chart if that’s difficult to believe:

    http://www.investmentu.com/article/detail/21736/us-coal-production#.WCTpnuxMFcs

President Obama issued a moratorium (which is not a ban) on NEW federal coal leases. But during his first 7 years the govt continued issuing coal leases. And according to analysts the moritorium will not immediately affect production, as current federal leases produce enough coal to supply the country’s needs for 20 years. President Obama’s Interior Secrertary said exceptions to the new-lease moratorium could be granted to ensure adequate production of metallurgical coal used in steel production, or to allow small modifications to existing leases.

To increase coal export President Obama ordered his Corp of Engineers to issue permits for three new coal export terminals on the west coast. Stymied by local resistant the president ordered all his departments to expedite the permits to expand coal export terminals on the Texas coast. And the result: Kinder Morgan announced it had entered into an agreement with Peabody Energy to handle up to 2 million tonnes of Colorado coal annually at its Houston Bulk Terminal. To accommodate the additional tonnage, KM will invest approximately $18 million to expand the facility. Unit trains of Union Pacific will transport bituminous coal from Colorado mines marking the first time that western coal will be exported from the Port of Houston. So in addition to exporting more coal we will burn more train diesel hauling it to Texas.

Oil production almost reaching the all time record high during President Obama’s term. In fact GOM oil production from govt leases have reached an all time high during President Obama’s last year in office. NG consumption hitting a record high during President Obama’s second term.

During Presidernt Obama’s 7th year in office the US exported over 160 MILLION bbls oil even though there was a supposed oil export ban. In fact during his term US oil exports were higher then ever before in history.

During President Obama’s time in office motor fuel export reached record high at more then twice the volume during President Bush’s time in office. And all exported refinery products made from US oil during President Obama’s 2 terms: increased from 700 million bbl per year to 1.5 BILLION bbls per year according to govt records.

During the first 7 years of President Obama’s terms US CO2 emissions essentially stayed flat at a level higher then anytime before the mid 90’s.

Largest oil spill in US history during President Obama’s term. Since the Macondo blow out President Obama’s BOEM has offered to lease over 100 million acres in the GOM. Additionally it approved more then a dozen offshore oil producing facilities.

During President Obama’s last year of his second term Canadian oil exports to the US reached its highest level ever at 3.4 million bopd according to the EIA. In fact the Canadian market share is gaining in the U.S. importing the “dirtiest oil on the planet”. And while delaying the permit crossing permit of the northern section of Keystone XL President Obama ordered all his departments to do whatever possible to expedite the completion of the southern leg of Keystone XL. And with its completion the choke point in OK was removed which allowed the record breaking import of oil sands production during the president’s last year in office.

I could go on but that’s should be enough FACTS to balance the discussion. It always tickles me to see folks argue that how politicians deal with businesses depends on whether there’s an R or D behind their name.

ya rockman that’s kinda what I’ve been saying since I been here. Alarmists Right wingers can’t STFU about their FF freedom’s being stymied by evil lefty environmentalists while record amounts of FF extraction and use are being broken. The more FF’s that are extracted and burned the louder their protests of stolen freedoms from evil lefty’s get – go figure? Perfect example of brainwashed true believers. On the other side is the hero worship of enviro Obama and rousing cheers whenever another solar panel gets installed and playing with numbers (framing) of foreign countries one whole day with no fossil fuel usage (electric) . Worst of all is claiming the Pairs Accord is going to “save” us. It’s not. See? all these humans saying one thing and doing another and viewing the world through their ideological lenses. Fantasists. Oh and we be going to mars too. To understand the big picture the only FACT that matters is that “beliefs” trump facts 99% of the time. Prefabricated Worldviews are impervious to facts and the robust body of evidence demonstrating it is irrefutable. Even those aware of this and who make an effort to not fall prey to it can’t do it 100% of the time.

Yes, our only hope is a world wide severe depression that does not cause total collapse and allows people to downsize in a tolerable manner with minimal social unrest.
Thee financial crisis of 2008 saw a significant drop in worldwide emissions,treaties/agreements are just pieces of false promises.
Unfortunately, people in cold climates will not willingly freeze in winter….anything that can burn will be lit to keep warm.
Should be interesting next 4 years.
Ape should have plenty of material to keep us all entertained on Global Warming

Revi, good analysis. Most have no idea that there are different grades of coal just like oil and we are nearing the bottom of the barrel of plus net energy coal too.

Billions of tons sounds good, but if it takes 10 tons of bituminous to replace the energy in one ton of anthracite, those billions will not last long. And lignite is not much better than wood.

‘NET’ energy is verboten in these kind of articles because they are too close to reality.

  18. rockman on Fri, 11th Nov 2016 9:28 am

Mak – “And lignite is not much better than wood.” So true. OTOH if you have a sh*t load of lignite (like the 100+ year supply in Texas) then a state could generate 33% of its electricity from burning coal…just as Texas does now. Not quite as high as the Philippines getting 43% of its e- from coal.

And Texas consumes more electricity then the #2 state by a very wide margin. And demand is always increasing: from last August – The Texas electric grid set a new record Monday for the most power consumed at any given time in the state. Peak demand exceeded 70,000 megawatts Monday for the first time.

The low Btu content of lignite ain’t a problem when you got a lot of such a low cost energy source. And are building the largest CO2 sequestration project on the planet to handle the second largest source of US GHG…a power plant burning cheap lignite.

  19. John on Fri, 11th Nov 2016 7:35 pm

What, is this article a joke???

  20. makati1 on Fri, 11th Nov 2016 7:45 pm

rockman, but at what point does the NET energy from lignite reach the level where it is not energy efficient to mine it? About like the point with petroleum when it is no longer profitable to recover because the EROEI is not worthwhile. No mention of ‘facts’ like that in all of these hopey, feely articles. Such perspective is not poplar today because it points out the end of our way of life in the near future.

Wind and solar are safer, cleaner and cheaper.

Electric vehicles and solar powered homes and businesses are the future.

    Cheaper will win.
