Noam Chomsky: The United States, Not Iran, Poses Greatest Threat to World Peace

In a speech Saturday at The New School in New York, Noam Chomsky explained why he believes the U.S. poses the greatest threat to world peace. “[The United States] is a rogue state, indifferent to international law and conventions, entitled to resort to violence at will. … Take, for example, the Clinton Doctrine—namely, the United States is free to resort to unilateral use of military power, even for such purposes as to ensure uninhibited access to key markets, energy supplies and strategic resources—let alone security or alleged humanitarian concerns. And adherence to this doctrine is very well confirmed and practiced, as need hardly be discussed among people willing to look at the facts of current history.” Chomsky also explained why he believes the U.S. and its closest allies, namely Saudi Arabia and Israel, are undermining prospects for peace in the Middle East. “When we say the international community opposes Iran’s policies or the international community does some other thing, that means the United States and anybody else who happens to be going along with it.”

No disagreements from me. The US was voted the single greatest threat to world peace. You can’t argue those allegations when you see the US killing off leaders it has no further use for. The US purposely destabilized Ukraine and created a coup of a democratically elected government. Now you have war and chaos at the front door of Russia.

The same goes for Syria, Yemen, Lybia, Iraq. ISIS was a creation of the US and now everyone has to deal with the blowback which happens to be Europe at the moment.

Amen! And I am not even religious…lol.

The best thing that could happen for the world is to have the US collapse and be unable to support it’s huge government and military.

Rodster, you know in AA they tell you to ask yourself “how did I contributed to problems and conditions of pain and suffering from my alcoholism instead of finger pointing with blame and resentment. I will accept the US as the greatest threat to world peace but you can’t tell me these countries mentioned by you did not have multilayered social, political, and economic issues and stresses unrelated to anything America did. To distill every global problem down to “Its America” is simplistic and intellectually shallow.

It’s gonna be interesting to see which countries kick ‘merika while its down. ‘Merika has put a lot of effort into making enemies and pissing people off all over the world for a long time now. Once ‘merika gets knocked down a few pegs it’ll be time for some payback I’m sure. It’s gonna be interesting to see.

The US did not create ISIS directly. It cultivated and fertilized an already powerful movement of multiple players and ideas. When the US invaded Iraq and disbanded the Iraqi army that started the process. It snowballed from there. The Iraqi occupation and the alienation of the Sunni’s was another step. The cultivation of Syrian rebels was another step. I imagine someone in the labyrinth of MIC directly supported ISIS along with KSA but I imagine that was a black op.

Of course, the militarist-imperialist, rentier-socialist, Anglo-American corporate-state is the biggest threat to world peace. The last thing the imperial corporate-state wants is peace, because the business of empire is war, and war is good business for imperialists.

Put differently, eCONomics is politics. War is the extension of politics with other means. War is the business of empire, and the eCONomics and politics of war is good business for imperialists.

Therefore, eCONomics is politics is war with other means for the intellectual, moral, ethical, philosophical, and business rationalization for imperial expansion of territory, expropriation of resources and cheap labor for profit, co-opting of foreign elites, and genocide and ecocide in the process.

I say this as a former “economic hit man” in the 1980s to early 1990s whose “murderous crimes” (figuratively speaking, of course), if you will, were rather amateurish compared to the “achievements” of many of my older peers and betters back in the day.

As one superior “economic hit man” once rhetorically asked in my presence, “Which country would you prefer ruling over you if you were not an American, the US or Russia/Soviet Union or China?”

And then there is this food for thought:

    http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2015-09-23/worst-part-central-bankers-know-exactly-what-they-are-doing

“Confusion is power. What better way to confuse and mislead the investment world than to place bad bets on Fed policy changes?

Heading into the end of 2015, we are only going to be faced with ever mounting mixed messages and confusion from the mainstream media, international banks and central banks. It is important to always remember, though, that this is by design. A common motto of the elite is “order out of chaos,” or “never let a good crisis go to waste.” Think critically about why the Fed has chosen to push forward with earth-shaking policy changes this year that no one asked for. What does it have to gain? And realize that if the real goal of the Fed is instability, then it has much to gain through its recent and seemingly insane actions.”

So Noam Chomsky sees the obvious.

    America is a world problem.

The United States was founded as a slave state and its existence absolutely depended on genocide, free labor, and continuous expansion into other people’s lands and resources.

Nothing has changed in hundreds of years.

Whether it is called slavery, disposable labor, mass imprisonment, or globalisation…

The United States has always been a club, a country club.

As George Carlin said, the country is a big club… and you ain’t in it.

No one is going to have any sympathy for Americans for all the shit they have done to the planet.

It will be a reward well deserved.

  15. onlooker on Thu, 24th Sep 2015 2:26 am

Well said Bloomer in regards to the US military.

  16. GregT on Thu, 24th Sep 2015 2:53 am

“The U.S. military doesn’t defend democracy”

The US military is defending a corporatocracy. Real democracy hasn’t existed in the US for decades. Contrary to popular belief.

  17. Davy on Thu, 24th Sep 2015 4:57 am

The Russian Military is defending a mafia oligarchy run by a disguised Putin dictatorship. This Russian dictator is remilitarizing and playing a game of chicken with the west. It is a common behavior in animals to puff yourself up, use colors to cause fear, and make noises that scare. It is a dangerous game especially considering Russia’s brutal history of war and subjugation. Russia cannot be trusted because over the years it has engaged in some of the worst atrocities known to man.

Russia is a formidable military but not righteous one. It is engaged in a military industrial complex as bad as or worse than the US. It is worse because it is basically a corrupt mafia organization and subservient to one man. It is less bad because the US military is so large and so engage in places it has little business being in. Nonetheless it is foul and no good just like the US.

Now that the Russian military is back in the Mideast supporting one of the cruelest regimes in human history we are not hearing as much Putin love and Russophile talk. How can people talk up Russia when they are so foul? When something is obvious it is better to remain silent. We still hear allot of anti-Americanism but that goes with the territory of being a declining superpower engage unlawfully across the globe.

The next 80 years will see the world population reach 11bln. Angela Merkel wants to give them all a VW, that’s crapitalism guys, like it or not. That’s western democracy writ large, and the third world wants it slice of the pie, but the pie ain’t big enough. The US is out killing and bombing and helping terrorists to do the same so that VW can make a profit, like it or not.

World population in 80 years will maybe be 500MIL if we are lucky. I will bet on that. VW’s and the US will be unknowns. Mad max and war lords will replace terrorists.

  20. tita on Thu, 24th Sep 2015 6:14 am

The biggest irony of this kind of declarations is when you live in a country where you have the right to say that out loud. I’m not really sure Iran has the same liberty of speech.
In facts, USA don’t do wars to impose democracy, but rather preserve their own and their liberty. And many americans are probably conscious of that. But nonetheless, they support these wars, because they believe that the other countries don’t have the same rights as they have.
It’s like the Simpsons on the Fox Channel, regulary critizing the Fox. In the end, it makes Fox news looking better.
The real strength of the USA is their ability to master communication on a level that authorize them to be a rogue state.

  21. makati1 on Thu, 24th Sep 2015 6:39 am

tita, Americans have less freedom than most of the countries they invade. There is no longer any democracy to preserve in the US. Nor much freedom.

600,000+ laws on the books and you break at least one every day. TSA keeps track of all of them until they need something on you. You buy a new tracker for them every time you upgrade to a new cell phone. You tell them everything about you when you use your credit/debit card or post on the internet. You report in to them (IRS) for life no matter where you live in the world and are taxed on any income, etc. If you have any debt, you are not free. Most Americans are never truly free. They have no idea what it feels like or they would have had a revolution long ago.

You need a government permit/license to do anything in America. You do not own anything the government cannot take, including your life. You live in the frog’s pot of water that is being heated so slowly you do not feel it. Those of us standing in front of the stove can feel the heat and we moved away from it. Maybe you should also.

  22. Davy on Thu, 24th Sep 2015 6:52 am

The U.S. Is one of the most free countries on earth. Ask anyone who lives here and loves his country. Compared to other countries the red tape is low. Many people complain the U.S. has lax regulation that allow for example ugly development.

You can move around freely in the US. Who cares about airport check points. We should not be flying so much anyhow considering climate change. The TSA, NSA, And IRS survalience is overblown. The IRS budget has been gutted. The TSA and NSA is intrusive if you are Muslim.

Russia and China are among the least free in the world. Go foul of red tape in these countries and you may disappear.

Then there are third world countries like the Philippines that have few regulations and it shows. Forests and fisheries are in collapse. Out of control development is endemic. One commenter mentioned a high rise was shut down because it didn’t have the correct permits and blocked an important view of the city. Now that is lame if you want to discuss regulations and lack of.

  23. Rodster on Thu, 24th Sep 2015 7:05 am

“Americans have less freedom than most of the countries they invade. There is no longer any democracy to preserve in the US. Nor much freedom.”

You can’t argue with that because if it weren’t true Americans would not have to deal with the TSA/NSA/FISA/FBI/CIA all monitoring what you say and do. Once you awaken to the fact that what politicians tell you really isn’t so, I laugh every time I read or hear the G.W. Bush quote, “they hate us for our freedoms”. NO, they hate us because we topple their govt’s, kill millions of their citizens, create warlike conditions along with chaos, death, violence and destruction.

So try entering a plane without the TSA feeling you up or getting scanned, good luck on that one. It’s all in the name of we want to protect you from the terrorist boogeyman.

The underlining problem is that this cancer will spread around the globe until one day you awake to a global government. That day is coming and it would not surprise me that future generations will have their world turned into the “Hunger Games”.

  25. Davy on Thu, 24th Sep 2015 7:41 am

All the departments mentioned above are irrelevant. If you are up to no good you need to worry. If you stay out of people’s business you have little to worry about except bad luck of mistaken identity. Your odds of disappearing in China and Russia are so much greater.

GW, was president years ago not a valid comparison.

  26. Rodster on Thu, 24th Sep 2015 8:03 am

All the alphabet government departments are not irrelevant. They serve one purpose and that is to take away individual freedoms from its citizens. It’s all about herding and controlling the masses. That’s the end game just like the war on CASH. It’s all about controlling every aspect of a persons life, making them dependent upon the government and if they dare get out of line they will face the consequences. To me anyone who thinks that the US Government is looking out for them needs a reality check. To quote George Carlin “It’s a big club and we ain’t in it”.

Wrt to being killed in Russia or China, there are far too many recent examples of US citizens being harassed or killed who did nothing wrong other than questioning authority.

We all know screen names are no defense of anonymity. In spite of that, we feel free to publish government criticisms with no fear of arrest .
WE can join non violent extremist groups, say outrageous things, still walk the streets without fear of being killed for our public views.

  28. Makati1 on Thu, 24th Sep 2015 9:26 am

Bob, it is one of the worse places on earth to live and if you cannot see it, then you deserve the slavery coming.

You have no freedoms. You might think you can say anything on here and not have to worry. If I remember correctly, you are old, like me. No influence anywhere. Not worth their time. But they will destroy you just the same, slowly, financially and mentally.

You have to file a tax return every year until you die and that tells them where you are and what you have. If you use any of the bennies they give away, they have you again. If you own property, they have you. If you have a family, they have you. If you try to leave the country, they control that. Soon you will need papers to cross state lines and then to leave your county. All in the name of ‘your security’.

The brainwashing seems to be complete. It’s hard to shake after a long life of 24/7/365 indoctrination. I know.

This is true, but very much reminds me of merry old Englnd and the HBC, or Spain, or… All that had to be done was align whoever was in power their needs and wants with investors and you have this situation. It has always been thus.

The sad part is when folks are swayed by propaganda to encourage their children to enlist in their wars, or they are so poor they have to join the military to ‘get ahead’ or learn a skill. One step up from the ‘Press Gangs’, and age old in practice.

This is a depressing way to start the day. Maybe I’ll watch the Pope address Congress instead. Maybe I’ll just watch it rain.

I think people in Uruguay enjoy significantly more freedom and civil rights than people in the USA today, but they don’t have the same economic opportunities. Even during the military dictatorship I felt safer and freer in Uruguay than I feel in the USA today. I was never afraid of cops or the government in Uruguay like I am in the USA, and I have always been a law abiding person. I systematically avoid cops here; most seem to have very serious mental issues. Cops in Uruguay are just normal people struggling to get by like everybody else.

As someone else hinted, it’s great to enjoy the illusion of American freedoms and prosperity… as long as you have the winning complexion.

As long as “they” (American violence apparatus of cops, courts, and jails) don’t bother me, and I don’t have to deal with “those” people, America is the freest, safest, most wonderful place to live. The problem for Americans is that it is very expensive to live like this. Murdering, enslaving, destroying, subjugating, and trashing the world for your “WAY OF LIFE” is a very, VERY expensive proposition and it creates enemies and rage everywhere.

Enjoy it while it lasts, America, because there are only a few more years of this left for you and the bills are coming due.

Davy I am glad that you and yours are doing well, However, we do have approximately three hundred million people in the U.S. who are not doing as well. As far as” I am doing nothing wrong so I do not have to fear authority.” Have you looked at the currency regulations lately? How much cash does it take in your possession to have it stolen by the police in the event that you are searched under any pretext? How much cash can you withdraw from your bank without the authorities being notified? If you are stopped while driving by Homeland Security (within 100 miles of a coast or border) what paperwork are you required to produce? Why do American citizens require passports to re-enter the U.S. from Canada or Mexico? (so=called ‘enhanced driver’s license will work’) I am certain that all the people who parrot the theme “do nothing wrong and you will be fine” are stupid enough to not notice that the definition of what is wrong has expanded by enormous degrees since the Patriot Act, and will continue to evolve as the needs of your masters continue unabated increase.

Saudi Arabia and al-Qaeda Unite in Yemen
    http://www.foreignpolicyjournal.com/2015/09/23/saudi-arabia-and-al-qaeda-unite-in-yemen/

In viewing Yemen as an important battleground in the grander struggle against Iran’s expanding regional influence, Saudi Arabia has united with a variety of Yemeni Sunni factions in an effort to crush the Houthi insurgency. This has entailed the kingdom cooperating with Sunni Islamist groups that Saudi Arabia—along with other Arab and Western governments—have designated as “terrorist” organizations. However, as the U.S. continues to wage its War on Terror in Yemen, Riyadh’s strategy is complicating the kingdom’s already chilly relationship with Washington.

The de facto partnership between Riyadh and AQAP is made further evident by the fact that the Saudi-led military coalition has entirely avoided bombing AQAP targets, despite its aggressive bombing of other territories under Houthi control. While doubtful that AQAP has abandoned its objective of overthrowing the Saudi monarchy, Riyadh likely perceives its tacit alliance with AQAP as a short-term venture and is focused on the immediate task at hand.

Running off your mouth online is akin to pissing in the ocean, it has no impact whatsoever.

Those of you that have never been in trouble with the law are really cowardly. It means you’ve never stood up for anything. It means you’ve never once challenged the system.

It means you put “obedience” before freedom, liberty, truth your entire lives.

It means that you’ve hid in the shadows and acted like the good little boys and girls that you are.

Those who have faced the system can tell you exactly how “free” we are in the United Slaves of America. The rest of you are living in a delusional world that refuses to see what is going on with your fellow man.

I used to respect the law abiding, the “good citizen” who was upstanding, lawful, etc., but not anymore. Not when I realized what price they paid in terms of integrity, honesty, courage and bravery. None have ever risked life, property or freedom to speak up or actually do anything about the accelerating fascism. I realized that they were actually cowards, obedient sheep, unwilling or unable to do anything but play along.

America is not a free country, but it certainly has the most deluded, distracted and divided people on Earth. And the most cowardly. If this were not already true, then we would have had revolution decades ago.

    Jeff C,
So the world according to Jeff. If you haven’t been in jail you never stood up for anything?
A civil society is just a string of regulations that comes from an attempt to rite one small disagreement at a time. And there are billions of them. However imperfect this is how it’s done. If you can’t follow the laws then go to jail idiot.

You can’t dump your trash in your neighbors yard. If you do this you will go to jail or pay a fine and be required to clean it up. In Houston you get so much space once per week. You have to learn how to manage your space. Recycle bin is also once a week. These prices are not cheap either. If you have extra trash it will cost you an extra $65 whether your pickup is full or not. And have to drive 15 mile to the dump.
You can lobby and try to change the law and the price but pay you will. This is not a lack of freedom, this is the cost to live in that subdivision. There are cheaper ones.
People get laws changed all the time, some good bad. Freedom has nothing to do with it.
