Iranians Despair over Nuclear Deal Confrontation

Public Policy

Iran’s decision to further challenge the United States by boosting its uranium enrichment beyond limits in its 2015 nuclear deal has deepened fears among Iranians that their country will remain in crisis mode over the long term.

The United States’ exit from the pact last year, under President Donald’s Trump’s campaign to squeeze Iran with sanctions, has so far failed to force its clerical rulers to renegotiate.

Iran confirmed on Monday it had enriched uranium to a purity beyond that allowed by the pact. Trump, who ordered air strikes last month only to cancel them minutes before impact, has warned Iran’s leaders “to be careful”. Since May, he has tightened sanctions with the aim of halting Iran’s oil exports entirely, depriving it of its main source of revenue.

“Yes, life is difficult because of the sanctions. Yes, I think this (nuclear) program is too costly for Iranian people,” said Firouzeh, 43, a housewife in the city of Babolsar, reached by Reuters by telephone.

“But no matter what the reason is, I am against my country being attacked,” she said. Like others interviewed, she asked that only her first name be used due to sensitivities.

The confrontation has taken on a military dimension, with Washington blaming Tehran for attacks on oil tankers, and Iran shooting down a US drone, prompting Trump’s aborted strikes.

Iran emerged from years of sanctions under the deal with world powers that curbed its nuclear program in exchange for access to world trade. But it had barely begun to enjoy any benefits when Trump quit the pact last year, calling it too weak.

The aim of Trump’s “maximum pressure” on Iran is to push its rulers to accept tougher restrictions on its nuclear activity, drop its ballistic missile program and scale back support for militant proxies in Middle East conflicts.

Prices for basic goods have skyrocketed in Iran and a young population longs for jobs. In April, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) said Iran’s economy was expected to shrink for the second consecutive year and inflation could reach 40 percent.

Prices of bread, cooking oil and other staples have soared. A more than 60 percent devaluation of the riyal currency has forced some small factories to close down due to scarcity of raw materials and hard currency.

“Life is very expensive. Prices go up almost everyday. My salary is almost $200 and I have two children,” said elementary school teacher Ghorbanali Hosseini in Shiraz city. “I work three jobs and I still struggle to take care of my family.”

Iranian authorities say 15 percent of the workforce is unemployed. Many formal jobs pay a pittance, meaning the actual figure of people without adequate work is probably far higher.

“I want to live a normal life. I have a university degree but I am jobless, hopeless and sad. Now with these tensions, I am even less hopeful and scared,” said Soroush, who blames “Iranian leaders’ confrontational policies”.

Clerical rulers say sanctions will make Iran stronger.

I live in a contry which was exposed to the economic sanctions and belive me no sanctions can change the regime inside the country. They can help before the military action is taken , but military action is the only option. So war with iran is certain it is only a question of time

  2. Chrome Mags on Tue, 9th Jul 2019 6:11 pm

War with Iran is what Trump walked away from recently when Iran shot down a US drone and presumably were the source of bombing oil shipments in the Straits of Hormuz, saying the US was not being paid to protest oil shipments headed for foreign countries from that region.

So obviously the goal is to squeeze Iran financially with the sanctions on oil sales to get them to act in a way supportive of or at least not in conflict with Israel, but avoid a physical war which might bring in Trump’s kindred brother, Russia/Putin.

Ok, so we get the situation. But what if Iran decides to bomb ships in the Straits of Hormuz to the point of shutting down that choke point and oil price escalates with the knock on effect of initiating a global recession? Then the squeeze on Iran reaches a point in which military action is required to get the oil flowing again and bring price down, but risks Russia militarily siding with Iran.

This developing “in the Situation room with Wolff Blitzer” so to speak, has all the elements of an extremely hazardous potential escalation. I hope the American people are up for possibly shouldering the financial burden of a higher oil price and recession in which they will likely need to borrow lots of money to keep all their toys and or just put food on the table like the Iranians are now doing.

  3. Chrome Mags on Tue, 9th Jul 2019 6:22 pm

I just thought of something. What if in the developing scenario described above; Iran decides to drop a dirty nuclear bomb on the sunken oil shipments in the Straits of Hormuz, so any process undertaken to remove the blockage is more time consuming because the radioactivity level is dangerous for human exposure. Then we may be looking at a situation in which the blockage lasts so long the world economy collapses to the point in which no level of QE or low interest rates can jolt the economy into once again being supportive of billions of people. What then?

Trump set all this in motion with his anti Obama destruction crusade. That combined with his love affair with Israel has us at loggerheads with the quintessential Islamic theocracy that has defeated every empiric attempt to control it. And they are not about to let another shah be appointed to be the US’ puppet. China is the wildcard here. How involved are they willing to be.

China’s Losing Control Of Its Crushing Debt Load As Defaults And Missed Payments Skyrocket
China’s economic slowdown and heavy debt load is affecting everybody in the country – even it’s “jewelry queen”, Zhou Xiaoguang, according to the Wall Street Journal. Zhou, who went from selling trinkets on city streets to taking a seat in China’s parliament and becoming Ernst & Young‘s “Entrepreneur of the Year” was faced with the reality of being unable to pay her company’s billions of dollars in debt while in a bankruptcy court in April. She is just one example of a massive debt burden taking its toll on China. China has relied on borrowing to fuel its expansion for at least a generation. In 2018, the country was known for creating four billionaires a week and is number one globally in self-made fortunes. But this quick pace of growth, with many borrowing heavily in the process, also masked companies’ strategic mistakes. Fueled by debt, many over-expanded into crowded sectors and now those mal-investments and mis-allocations of resources are coming back to bite them. Over the past decade, the overall debt of the country has quadrupled to about three times the value of last year’s national output. Corporate debt makes up 2/3 of the total, amounting to more than $26 trillion last year. Most of the money is owed by government-run companies, but the stress is starting to surface also at private companies, who have less wiggle room with creditors and less support from the government. For instance, Chenxi Group was decimated by lenders last year when they suddenly decide to call in loans. Earlier that year, the founder of machine maker Zhejiang Jindun Group committed suicide, leaping to his death, leaving the company to later reveal that it owed about $1.4 billion to loan sharks. This year, Dong Wenbiao’s jet-maintenance to elder-care conglomerate, China Minsheng Investment Group, missed debt payments several times by days or weeks before making good on its obligations. In other words, the cracks in the surface of starting to show. Joseph P.H. Fan, a professor of finance and accounting at Chinese University of Hong Kong said: “Many Chinese entrepreneurs tend to borrow as much as possible, even if the core business doesn’t need it.” Fan called Zhou’s company, Neoglory, a “textbook example” of the country’s misallocation of financial resources. Neoglory fueled its evolution into a conglomerate through borrowings that ballooned to $6.8 billion even though cash was tight and profits were weak. The company took on new risks to borrow as it progressed, including tighter covenants and shorter payback schedules. When the company defaulted on a bond payment in mid September, its troubles became very evident. Zhou commented: “Though winter may be tough to live through, it’s a good time to do introspection.” Chinese courts have now ordered Zhou’s assets frozen. Starting in 2017, Beijing started to dial back an excess of lending by the financial sector – this became a deleveraging that caused shortages at many private companies. This crunch exposed egregious fundamental problems. At the same time, China’s broader economy was losing momentum. Its expansion maxed out at 10.6% in 2010 and now economists are hardly optimistic that the government’s bottom line 6% target will be achieved this year. The country desperately needs companies that might lead China to a new stage of development that’s less dependent on construction and exports. The debt load is making it difficult for business owners to reinvest in the economy and the trade dispute with the United States continues to wear away at the country’s confidence. And the cracks continue to show: last month, a government takeover of Baoshang Bank, sparked problems for other small banks and headaches for customers. It was the first bank takeover by regulators in decades and caused near panic. The corporate bond market is a small part of the puzzle but is relatively transparent compared to lending. Chinese companies last year had $1.72 trillion in debt securities outstanding, which was the second highest after American companies, who carry $5.81 trillion. Economists say the acceleration of the borrowing is worrisome. This acceleration has often proceeded recessions in other countries, and happened right before the 2008 crisis. Corporate bond demand weakened in 2018 and Beijing has now reversed its stance on lending and is encouraging banks to lend more. More than 18,000 companies filed bankruptcy petitions in Chinese courts last year, which is about twice as many as the previous year. Bankruptcy had previously been a rare action to take in China. Bond defaults also hit record numbers last year at 125, which was five times the number in 2015. Defaults are running at an even faster pace in 2019 so far.

“Researchers In Switzerland Say Zero Emission Society Will Require Seasonal Energy Storage”
    https://cleantechnica.com/2019/07/09/researchers-in-switzerland-say-zero-emission-society-will-require-seasonal-energy-storage/

“That figure further assumes that significant steps are taken to shift to electric vehicles where possible in the transportation sector and to improve the energy efficiency of existing residences and commercial structures. According to a report in Science Daily, the research assumes heating requirements of all buildings will first be reduced by around 42% through renovation measures and that 3/4 of the remaining heating requirements in houses and apartments will be achieved using electric heat pumps. It further assumes about 2/3 of all private car trips will be in electrically-powered automobiles. The research focuses on five areas. First, replacing conventional furnaces with heat pumps. Second, because Switzerland proposes to end its use of nuclear power, each nuclear power plant must be replaced with about eight times the photovoltaic output. A nuclear plant delivers around 8,000 hours of electricity per year but a solar cell delivers only about 1,000 hours a year. As a result, solar panels will need to be installed on virtually all available surfaces. Third, a dramatic increase in electrical storage capacity using all available technologies including batteries and pumped hydro as well as geothermal and technologies that convert electricity into chemical energy sources. Fourth, they recommend heat storage technologies so the use of heat pumps can be reduced as much as possible in winter. Fourth, create seasonal heat storage facilities so that the electricity requirements of the heat pumps can be reduced in winter. Fifth, new HVDC transmission lines that will bring electrical power from sunnier southern countries to Switzerland in the winter when electrical demand is highest. A bright spot in the analysis for electric vehicle advocates is that EVs will not unbalance the grid as they can be charged when electricity is plentiful, assuming a proper charging infrastructure is created. “For the sustainable conversion of our energy system to succeed, we need both short and long term — i.e. seasonal — energy storage technologies.”

  34. Davy on Wed, 10th Jul 2019 6:33 am

This is a sobering look at the true cost of zero emission society and why it is unlikely. The collecting hardware is the easy part and considering the amount of hardware needed this is still a daunting task. We can and should integrate solar and wind into our current system. There are plenty of sweet spots to take advantage of. The problem is when the thresholds of grid intermittency creates instability. It is the approach to this zone that will be a potential area of malinvestment at a time when no resources should be wasted. There is the possibility of stranded assets representing a big loss in system ability. Each grid is different to some degree reflecting its customers but in general a grid is limited by its ability to handle intermittency and complicated technology.

This is well known but what is not well known is where that point is. The reason for this is grids are complex and complicated. They are complex because of the human element and complicated for technical reasons. This report understands the real challenges and that is seasonal storage. Seasonal storage is a big hurdle because this requires huge storage amounts. Short term storage is already being handles by batteries and some pump storage but long term storage is a new area that has little if any assets in place. Even short term storage is barely been integrated into the grid. This article has some basic points society should be pushing and that is space heating and insulation. Its pushing of EV’s is another area that is not sound in regards to how many. It is likely EV’s are not up to the task for a zero-emission society transport needs at least as we understand transport now in the current normal. There will have to be huge changes in behavior in regards to transport.

This points to the critical elements to a zero-emission society that are now only vaguely addressed. We have the human behavior of adapted behavior involving demand management and conservation. We have the seasonal storage needs of the whole system. This aspect is huge and as large as the effort at putting panels and wind turbines out in the landscape. This complexity is likely beyond human management if we do not change the general publics behavior. Human behavior can only be changed so much in todays market-based capitalism and liberal democracy. Centralized demand management that compensates for the public’s behavior has its limits. Unless you harness each and ever individual there will be no way a centralized system can manage the fickleness of discretionary human behavior. The issue also surfaces as to can the economics of these changes be managed. The typical research “think tanks” take it for granted that all these enormous changes are economic and can be paid for. This is far from certain.

I am of the opinion that we are not going to integrate renewables beyond a certain point because of the inability to adapt human behavior. We are not going to be able to afford the seasonal storage needs to make this happen. Transport changes alone are huge such that a transformation of the transport sector is unlikely. The complexity of all this combined will the complicated nature of the tech means the likelihood of instability is so great that the baseline needs of the grid will not be able to be overcome. A zero-emission economy is a fantasy. It is far better if we acknowledge our limitations say at some safe doable percentage of renewables in our grid than this zero-emission world. Zero emissions is not accurate anyway. No human activity is zero emissions. Of course, different locations will manage their renewable penetration differently. I have been pushing the decoupling of society into full on demand sectors and other areas especially rural and undeveloped as trending towards intermittent and seasonal in their energy orientation. Full on demand areas would be areas vital to the economy and command and control and the rural areas are areas that can more easily incorporate an adapted living arrangement. A rural agricultural area can easily live differently. They can be in the business of harvesting and gathering biomass and solar energy and living within that arrangement. We are not going to make society zero emission with all its complexity and complicated tech but we likely can make some of it that way. This can be done if we change behavior and the structure of society itself into more and less developed sectors.

    And so was this

I am spending less time on this lame unmoderated forum to concentrate on my own blog. I do want to thank all those who have attacked me with giving me material for growth. I have saved the best of my comments for my new blog. I have years worth of material. I have enjoyed moderating the worst of you and neutering your selfish useless agendas. I will still be here it is just I will be spending more time putting out a blog. I don’t expect much of a following with my blog. This is more a personal effort to assemble what I have learned over the last 10 years of formulating my REAL Green Deep Adaptation. Many of my ideas and lifestyles are not mine. I barrow what ever works. I do not claim anything either. It is an open source effort. Anyone can take what I am offering and use it however you want. Take my title if you like. For the stalkers here I hope you find my blog and visit the comment forum. It will be only lightly moderated to prevent juanpee identity theft and excessive cloggo spamming. LOL. There will be a prize for juanpee and annoymouse if you can stalk my blog. Double LOL. Anyway fuck my enemies and many thanks to those who contributed to my metamorphous

Now if I was really moderating this lame forum, like I sometimes believe I am, that would make this a moderated forum. Instead, this forum in reality is unmoderated, which means that nobody is really moderating anybody. I get real mixed up about that sometimes.

    Sorry y’all.
