Iran points finger at Israel after atomic expert killed, vows revenge
Iranian officials on Friday moved quickly to vow revenge for the murder of one of the country’s top nuclear experts and suggested Israel was involved in ambushing Mohsen Fakhrizadeh’s car near Tehran.
The murder comes 11 months after the U.S. assassinated top Revolutionary Guards commander Qassem Soleimani and threatens to ramp up tensions in the Middle East.
Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif condemned the act of “cowardice,” and said there were “serious indications” of Israeli involvement. “Iran calls on int’l community—and especially EU—to end their shameful double standards & condemn this act of state terror,” he wrote on Twitter.
The BBC’s Persian service quoted a string of Iranian officials reiterating the claim that the attack was carried out by “Zionists” and quoted Hossein Salami, head of the Revolutionary Guards, and Mohammad Bagheri, chief of staff of the armed forces, vowing that Tehran would exact revenge.
Fakhrizadeh was named in the International Atomic Energy Agency’s assessment of Iran’s nuclear program in 2015, saying that he had been involved in developing “a possible military dimension to its nuclear programme.”
Iran insists that it is developing nuclear technology only for civilian purposes.
A number of Iranian nuclear scientists were murdered between 2010 and 2012, meaning Fakhrizadeh needed close security.
In 2018, Israel presented what it hailed as “new and conclusive proof” about the goals of Iran’s nuclear program, leading Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to say “Iran lied, big time.” Israel has made no comment on the assassination.
