With prices spiralling and President Hassan Rouhani at loggerheads with US opposite number Donald Trump, things got even worse this week with the reimposition of tough economic sanctions aimed at further undermining the Islamic fundamentalist republic.
Measures which target cars, gold and other metals trading, as well as the government’s ability to buy US dollars, came into force today.
The US has acted after Mr Trump pulled out of the JPCA nuclear agreement earlier this year, the deal which eased sanctions against Iran in exchange for no longer embarking on nuclear weapons development.
The Iranian rial has lost half of its value against the US dollar on the unofficial market this year, while the price of fruit and vegetables has increased by 50 percent since the start of the year.

God damn this regime and its corrupt rulers
In the current economic climate, low-income families are struggling to put food on the table. One woman, speaking to the Financial Times as she paid over the odds for a lettuce and a cabbage, said: “God damn this regime and its corrupt rulers.
“They have sent their children to the US and Canada while making us poorer every day.”
Recent months have been marked with protests across Iran on issues ranging from water shortages to joblessness, and the Trump administration is partly motivated by a desire to trigger a popular uprising and consequent regime change – something implied by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in a speech delivered last month in which he characterised the country’s rulers as a “mafia”.
The commander of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards Major General Mohammad Ali Jafari has acknowledged the gravity of the situation, declaring that “domestic weaknesses and threats are more serious” than the foreign military threat posed by the US or other countries.

US President Donald Trump has made no secret of his contempt for Iran’s leaders (Image: GETTY)
The rank-and-file are infuriated by allegations of corruption, while reformist and hardline politicians routinely accuse each other of fraud and mismanagement.
Ali, 61, a former member of the Revolutionary Guards in the city of Amol, said: “Corruption is so high that it has penetrated everywhere.
“Why should we struggle with daily issues and risk our lives to fill the pockets of corrupt people?”
In anticipation of the sanctions, wealthier Iranians have been stockpiling basic commodities and buying up gold and cars in an bid to protect the value of their savings.
Another shopkeeper said: “Before, people who could not afford to eat meat were at least having bread and yoghurt.
“But now even yoghurt is becoming unaffordable for some families.”
Experts have warned Mr Trump’s sanction mean a price of a barrel of oil could rocket to $90.
Morgan Stanley estimates Iranian production will drop to 2.7 million barrels a day by the fourth quarter, with more than a million barrels taken offline.

The message I pick up is that Iran is closing the ranks. It is true that a lot of younger people in Iran would like a free-er western life style, but that does not imply treason towards their own country if they are under attack. The American regime is absolutely not popular in Iran and has no credibility.

“Huh? According to Antius, Express is a Zionist owned rag. More poisening of the wells by millimind.
Typical war monger newspaper. It is the worst of the worst of the UK tabloids of hate mongers:”
The Daily Express is owned by Richard Desmond, the son of Ukrainian and Latvian Jews.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Desmond
The man’s politics appear somewhat complicated. He is apparently a Eurosceptic and a UKIP donor. However, he has been a fierce opponent of Racial Nationalism in the UK. Before elections, the Express would start what came to be known as ‘Hate Week’ in which it would run articles attempting to divert support away from the BNP. It will be noted, that whilst the BNP was officially an anti-EU party, most of the people within it understood the need for European cooperation in the opposition of Marxism and it formed alliances with mainly East European nationalists.
Desmonds’ support for UKIP may be understood in this way. One way of preventing the rise of a genuinely nationalist party, is to ensure that another useless and ineffectual puppet party occupies the same political space; one that enjoys just enough media support to be considered ‘acceptable’ by the public, without presenting a genuine prospect of becoming a nationalist force. Hence, UKIP; which pretends to be nationalist by being anti-EU, without really embodying any of the ideology or understanding of a nationalist party.
So Cloggie is correct. The Daily Express is the worst kind of rag. Manipulative and with evil purposes. One of the reasons that I believe that a frontal assault on the political sphere will not work in Britain. We need underground movements.

https://sputniknews.com/middleeast/201808081067040833-iran-us-oil-trade/
I don’t know! Impossible is a very definitive word. I hardly ever use it. I don’t think it applies in this case. Insane? Yes, definitely. I don’t think the US can stop oil exports from Iran without crashing the global financial system. Risking crashing the GFS at this point in time would be insane since there are no guarantees that we could save much of it. But November is midterm elections time in the USA, and some kind of bullshit was to be expected. I guess the idea is to cash in the political benefits of this decision in November and pay the consequences after the elections or backtrack then. I don’t see Trump backing down, but he won’t jeopardize his 2020 candidacy if he can avoid it.

This analysis by ‘Geopolitical Futures’ predicts that China will decline economically and that the dominant power in East Asia by 2040 will be Japan. They also believe that US global hegemony will continue.
https://geopoliticalfutures.com/the-world-in-2040/
Their logic is that China will be consumed by internal conflict and that Japan, with its strong internal social stability and strong military, will emerge as the dominant power.
I find this point of view difficult to reconcile with the reality of Japan’s shrinking population, its lack of domestic energy resources, and its retreat from nuclear power and above all, the fact that its population is roughly a tenth that of China.
But generally, the idea that the future is Pax China, would appear to be equally questionable.

Davy, truth be said, none of us know what is going to happen and we are deluding ourselves by pretending. But it is fun to speculate. In truth, no one here, or anywhere else, has a complete picture of what is going on, day to day, in terms of politics and geopolitics. There is too much information for any one man to really comprehend. We each get bits and pieces of information. Personally, I find it overwhelming, and I don’t really have time to build up a full understanding; though I am more confident of some developments. It is a foregone conclusion for example, that individual living standards will soon decline in the US and Europe and are also likely to see a fall in China.
When the next big recession hits, how the big players cope will give us a better idea as to which major power (US, Europe, China) will be the dominant player in the second quarter of the 21st century. If China is going to collapse or decline as an economic power, that is when it will happen. Ditto, the US and Europe. So we have perhaps a year to wait, before the general path of the future becomes clear.
GregT on Wed, 8th Aug 2018 9:59 am
“In anticipation of the sanctions, wealthier Iranians have been stockpiling basic commodities and buying up gold and cars in an bid to protect the value of their savings.”
Sanctions attack the poor and the innocent of a society, with the intention of creating societal unrest and civil war to pressure the upper echelons. Sanctions seldomly achieve their desired results, are immoral and unjust, and are more often than not a precursor to broader based conflicts and wars.
Davy on Wed, 8th Aug 2018 10:14 am
I am on the same page Antius. It has been a lifelong passion to follow the collapse process. I believe that civilizations like ecosystems cycle in and out of collapse and regeneration. It is the process of succession that assures the end of an ecosystem or a civilizations. Now that we are global and interconnected the fact is we are one big ecosystem. This includes nations and the planetary ecosystem. This planetary ecosystem is the web of life and the various cycles and forces that the planet drives. We are now part of this and the prime mover of all this as the climax species. Yet, all life lives within geological acquiescence and this is why the carbon cycle destabilization by humans is so ominous. Good or bad the fate of the planet is in our hands now. On the smaller level the fate of civilization is in the hands of the major powers. What the leadership in the US is doing currently is extremely dangerous and why being critical of this activity is so important.

Interesting theory! Here’s mine. I don’t see the EU surviving long term, a core, maybe, but nothing like it is today. For historical, geographical, and cultural reasons it makes sense that the UK be one of the first to leave. The USA will likely be divided into a few smaller entities; I have no idea when. China will regain the #1 position which it held for most of the last two millenia. I don’t know if Russia and the EU will ever join forces, but it is a possibility. The EU needs to take the initiative and change the way it has been treating Russia for this to happen. This will never happen while the US has military control of Europe as it does today. A multipolar world seems like the next logical step. That could eventually lead to an even smaller, more regional world.
