High-ranking Saudi intel officer oversaw botched interrogation of missing journalist

Public Policy

A Saudi mission to interrogate and possibly abduct journalist Jamal Khashoggi in Istanbul was organized by a high-ranking officer with the General Intelligence Presidency, Saudi Arabia’s main intelligence service, three sources familiar with the case told CNN.

One of those sources describes the officer involved as close to the inner circle of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
It is unclear whether the crown prince authorized an interrogation or abduction. CNN has previously reported that several US officials have said that any such operation could not have happened without the prince’s direct knowledge.
A second source said the officer had assembled and sent his own team to interrogate Khashoggi. They suspected Khashoggi of having ties to the kingdom’s arch rival, Qatar, the source said. There has been no evidence to substantiate Khashoggi had such ties.
Another source told CNN the mission’s organizer was not transparent about what he told Riyadh, explaining why the government had no clear information for days.
It’s not clear whether these elements will be included in the report ordered by the Saudi authorities into the affair. On Tuesday, President Trump tweeted that Crown Prince Mohammed had said in a phone call that he had started and would expand a full investigation into the matter and that answers would be forthcoming shortly.
Khashoggi’s body was cut into pieces after he was killed two weeks ago at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, a Turkish official told CNN on Tuesday. The claim, which was first made to the New York Times earlier in the investigation into Khashoggi’s fate, comes after Turkish officials searched the consulate for nine hours on Monday night. The Turkish official would not comment on the disposal method for the body.

Passports suggest alleged hit team had ties to Saudi government

Turkish officials have said privately that Khashoggi was killed in the consulate on October 2 after he arrived to obtain papers that would have allowed him to marry his Turkish fiancée, Hatice Cengiz. Saudi Arabia has previously insisted he left the building alive, but Cengiz says she never saw him again.
Turkish authorities believe 15 Saudi men who arrived in Istanbul on October 2 were connected to the disappearance — and possible murder — of Khashoggi at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October 2.
Turkish officials provided CNN with passport scans of seven men they suspect to have been part of the alleged Saudi hit team. The passport scans were taken on the day of Khashoggi’s disappearance.
One of the passport scans appears to belong to Salah Muhammad al-Tubaiqi, listed as the head of forensic medicine at the Saudi Ministry of Interior. Another member of the group identified by Turkish official media and appearing in the alleged passport scans is Muhammad Saad al-Zahrani, who has appeared on Saudi state TV alongside Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
Sabah, a pro-government private newspaper in Turkey, last week listed 15 names alongside photographs of men who authorities believe were flown into Istanbul from Riyadh. Eight of the 15 were identified by state news Anadolu Agency.
Two sources familiar with the investigation confirmed to CNN that the 15 men listed by Sabah were of interest in the ongoing criminal investigation launched by Turkish prosecutors.

Officials to search Saudi Consul General’s residence on Wednesday

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Tuesday that Turkish investigators were looking into “toxic” and “painted over material” as part of their inquiry.
“My hope is that we can reach conclusions that will give us a reasonable opinion as soon as possible, because the investigation is looking into many things such as toxic materials and those materials being removed by painting them over,” Erdogan told reporters.
CCTV footage, which has served as a focal point in the investigations, showed vehicles moving from the consulate building to the nearby Saudi consul general’s residence on October 2. CNN saw a cleaning crew enter the main consulate building on Monday before Turkish officials, including a forensics team, arrived to begin their investigation.
A search of the consul general’s residence that was expected to take place on Tuesday did not occur, according to a deputy police officer near the building who spoke to CNN’s team in Istanbul. Investigators said the search will take place Wednesday, according to state broadcaster TRT.
Meanwhile, the consul general himself, Mohammed Otaibi, left Turkey on Tuesday, the semiofficial Anadolu news agency said.
A Turkish forensic police officer works in Saudi Arabia's consulate in Istanbul on October 15.

On Friday, a source familiar with the ongoing investigation told CNN that Turkish authorities have audio and visual evidence that showed Khashoggi was killed inside the Saudi consulate.
The evidence, which was described to the source by a Western intelligence agency, showed there had been an assault and a struggle inside the consulate. There is also evidence of the moment that Khashoggi was killed, the source said.
Saudi Arabia has been under intense international pressure to explain Khashoggi’s apparent death, which has created a diplomatic rift between Saudi Arabia and the West.
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo visited Saudi Arabia on Tuesday for talks with with King Salman, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, and Foreign Minister al-Jubeir. The visit came as sources told CNN that the kingdom was preparing to acknowledge that Khashoggi died at the consulate in Istanbul in an interrogation that went awry. The sources said the interrogation was intended to lead to his enforced return to Saudi Arabia.
“My assessment from these meetings is that there is serious commitment to determine all the facts and ensure accountability, including accountability for Saudi Arabia’s senior leaders or senior officials,” Pompeo said Tuesday after meeting.
Pompeo will fly to Ankara, Turkey, on Wednesday to meet with Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu, State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert said.

Of course, presumption of innocence is warranted.  At the same time, the bobbing and weaving of the Saudi overlordship, and the whole blood-drenched history of Islam (which makes heretic-burning Cretinity look angelic by comparison) make this case a profoundly suspicious one to say the least.  All of the clues surrounding Khashoggi’s disappearance point in one direction only:  to a garden-variety Mohammedan murder.  But we may be sure that the DeepState will force the Prez to accept the lies/excuses from Riyadh.  Because — let’s face it — we need the money.  What will the City on the Hill do if it does not continue to accept Saudi oil money for American genocide weapons to be used in Yemen?

Yup, nothing to see here, folks.  Just keep moving on.

Until the door swings both ways, and Muslims can renounce their religion without being killed for it, Muslims are slaves to an archaic religious belief that split from the other archaic religious belief, Christianity, when some goatherd started to profess that he heard ‘ghosts’ that differed from the other goatherd’s ‘ghosts’. An intelligent alien visiting the earth would think we are all crazy, and it would be correct. LOL

Average Islamic IQ is 85. It would be cruel to take their meds from them. Islam (and Christianity) are faith systems for weaklings that can’t carry their own weight and need to be kept on life-support with the promise of an eternal afterlife in bliss… for said weaklings. If a christian weakling gets in contact with science he could lose his faith and become a marxist. Oh and the christian and marxist texts are written by those who can’t be named, the eternal leaders of the weaklings.

KSA is a bad actor so bad actors don’t get the luxury of presumption of innocence. Yet, if you care about the truth than all you can do is wait. These days there are false flag false flags. The dishonesty today is at the heart of international relations. We have become so sophisticated and complex with so much competitive spirit that dishonesty is one of the few effective tools left. There are plenty of actors that want to see the KSA leadership gone both within and from outside.

I agree Cloggie. The ability to throw off religious indoctrination is very difficult, It often means you have to give up most, if not all, of the people you know, especially family.

For Muslims, it means putting your life in danger.

My guess is that CNN is going to say whatever the deep state wants it to say. Trump is not draining the swamp by helping the Saudis. But what’s really going on? Remember Qatar? Remember that this is an arm wrestle between Saudi (a Wahabbist theocracy) and the Muslim Brotherhood of which Erdogans AK party is a member. Almost certainly this was a planned murder. But why? Who was Khashooji? I’ve read that he is Dodi al Fayeds cousin, making Mohammed al Fayed his uncle. His other uncle was the middle man in the IRAN-CONTRA scandal and his grandfather was Ibn Sauds personal doctor. This guy was as elite as you can get. Way above the 1%. Exactly the type of person that MBS locked up in the Ritz Carlton and tortured not so long ago. Khashooji was an employee of a major US media outlet and a resident of the US where he got his education. Khashooji was also at one time a personal aide to the former head of Saudi intelligence. This guy was on the run because his faction was enemies with the MBS faction. The Saudis are totally out of control, but I ask you. Are they doing anything America hasn’t done? From wars of choice and lying about casus belli the US /UK has led the way, extraordinary renditions and drone attacks have ruined thousands of lives. Don’t be shocked America, its just the mirror looking back at you.

Religion has done more harm than good. There is no “god” and no “life-after-death. People (regardless of who they are) need to take ownership of their own lives: only they are the masters of their own destiny and the makers of their own fate.

  13. Richard Guenette on Wed, 17th Oct 2018 5:14 pm

Humans invented ‘God’ in THEIR own image and used it to control people. If we are an intelligent species, we should see religion for what it really is: divisive, willful ignorance, hateful and poison.

  14. Anontarded1 on Wed, 17th Oct 2018 6:59 pm

richard the tard, when you said “God” and “religion”, you’re actually tarding hard, and more seriously you’re covering for Islam.
    ignorance is no excuse.

Remember yazidi sex slaves, terrorism on coptic christians, against israel, ISIS, Mosul, Raqqa, Syria, Libya, Boko Haram, attack in mumbai, San Bernadino, enslaving of darkies in Libya a year ago? Remember reconquista? the sacking of constantinople?

Remember manchester arianna concert attack, london bridge?

It’s not “god” or “religion” it’s allah the freak.

    Oh don’t froget Asia Bibi

Education and healthcare should be free in all countries to educate and empower all citizens. Religions should be kept out of public schools and all places of worship (including churches) should pay property taxes to contribute to society. This is 2018, not the Dark Ages. The world needs to move forward, not backwards.

    reverse psychology

60 christians militants were killed in somalia today. Religion is bad idea.

“Washington (AFP) – The United States conducted its largest air strike in nearly two years against militants in Somalia, killing about 60 Al-Shabaab fighters, the US military said Tuesday.”

It now turns out that the barbarous treatment of Meshoggi is standard for high-ranking defectors of the regime:

“Jamal Khashoggi: What the Arab world needs most is free expression”

Freedom of expression is incompatible with fundamentalist Islam.

And the insane, nihilistic western left insists we should “integrate” with these types. This is not going to end well for said left, that is digging its own grave. Politics will be about nothing else anymore.

“US Intelligence “Increasingly Convinced” Saudi Prince Ordered Khashoggi’s Killing”
    https://tinyurl.com/y7ezev34

“If anything, the one thing that now appears certain about this situation is that, in a maneuver that’s reminiscent of the de-classification of an intelligence community report blaming Russia for interfering in the 2016 election, the US intelligence community is once again rebelling against the Trump White House – after Trump suggested that he would do everything he could to preserve the US-Saudi relationship (reportedly fearful of losing Saudi cooperation in a plot to undermine Iran) – and has effectively joined with the Turks to undermine the rule of Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman.”

“Before a final report on the “facts” of the case has even been completed, it appears US intelligence agencies are already working to box Trump in, as the following passage in the Times story appears to set Trump up for more (presumably leaked) accusations that he is disregarding the findings of his own intelligence community, just like he did with Russia.”

“While the NYT has certainly distinguished itself a the preferred vehicle for leaks out of the US intelligence community, it isn’t alone in trying to shape the narrative surrounding MbS. The Daily Mail published a lengthy report Wednesday night detailing the disappearances of three Saudi princes who had criticized MbS’s authoritarian crackdown on human rights. While the Mail doesn’t have the best record for accuracy, the larger point is clear: Western media is seeking to paint MbS as a serial murderer who will mow down anyone – particularly traitorous family members or former government insiders – who dares to criticize his still-unofficial reign. But one fact that has been mostly lost in the churn of reporting surrounding the Khashoggi case is that, in the days after the journalists’ disappearance, the Saudi government agreed to buy S-400 missile defense systems from Russia, spurning repeated American warnings to scupper the deal. That alone could be enough to invite reprisals from deep state operatives who have already demonstrated their distaste for Russia. All of this will only provide more ammunition for lawmakers who are hoping to sanction Saudi Arabia over the killing, a move that would damage the longstanding US-Saudi relationship, perhaps irreparably. With this in mind, it’s worth asking: Which country has the most to gain from a collapse in US-Saudi relations?”

  20. joe on Thu, 18th Oct 2018 7:43 am

Not sure Trump actually covered for Saudi. He talk about the arms deals, but he’s a business man. He bought a boat from Khashoojis uncle (the IRAN-CONTRA one). He probobly would love this story to go away, and he’s right, the HAS to be PROOF. The real question is this, is Turkey willing to back up its claims and publish evidence. The world won’t believe anyone unless sombody comes out and puts their cards on the table. So far this is following a classic tale of ride out the storm and bury the story in the next crisis.
