These “centrists” maintain their ideology because we live in increasingly scary times, which means they’re stuck up a strange tree where they know things need to change but they can’t bring themselves to actually push for it because “What if I lose what little I still have?”

I haven’t read the book, but from the index I can get a grasp. The author is from Princeton, so expect no white nationalism. Alcohol, drugs are the symptoms, not the cause. The real cause is despair from demographic decline, from facing the prospect of no longer having a country you can call your own and it will only get worse. Dispossession. A bit like how the “Indians” felt after the Euros took over their country. They also drowned in “fire water”, until today.
Do not write them off though. Until 1989, the East-Germans were the most meek, docile people in Europe, now they are one of the most militant white nationalist. Expect that to happen in the US as well. At some point you have enough of your depression and want to escape from your mental low. Expect them to revolt, big time. And Trump will be the catalyst. Joe, I see a schism of sort playing out with conservative and liberal Catholics. Many liberal Catholics tend to lean towards atheistic type viewpoints where the conservative Catholics tend towards the bible thumping science denying side (when conflict occurs with reason).

It is a big country and multicultural so being too focused on one aspect is deceptive of the true reality. This is especially true since the country is in a soft civil war. In fact, I would point to the UK that is focused on killing any part of the US that deviates from the UKs instinct to rule the world from the swamp as the real force of subversion.
