Extinction Rebellion occupy Norway’s oil ministry thumbnail

Scores of Extinction Rebellion activists blocked access to Norway’s oil and energy ministry for more than five hours on Monday, before police cleared the demonstration and made arrests.

Around 17 campaigners, some with “Ban oil” written on their palms, occupied the ministry’s reception, while dozens of others demonstrated outside, stopping people getting into the building in central Oslo.

They described the blockade as a part of a 10-day protest against Norway’soil industry. Norway is Western Europe’s largest producer of crude and natural gas and pumps some four million barrels of oil equivalent per day.

Police started clearing the building by the afternoon and said they arrested 19 people, most of them people inside the ministry. Another 29 protesters were arrested when they blocked a major road in the city, the force said on Twitter.

Climate change has become a focal point of debate ahead of an election on Sept. 13, in which Norway’s centre-left opposition is expected to defeat the incumbent Conservative-led coalition.

“For decades we have written letters, we have spoken out, we have demonstrated. You let us speak but you are not listening,” 22-year-old activist Hanna Kristina Jakobsen told the crowd during the demonstration.

“This is why we do peaceful civil disobedience now. We are desperate.”

Norway’s Minister of Petroleum and Energy, Tina Bru, said she shared the worry about climate change but criticised the protesters’ tactics.

“We’ll never succeed in the fight against climate change if we scrap democracy on the way,” Bru said in a statement.

Extinction Rebellion is also planning protests elsewhere in Europe, with two weeks of demonstrations starting on Monday in London.

Earlier this week Extinction Rebellion activists blocked access to an Equinor-run (EQNR.OL) oil export facility on Norway’s west coast, temporarily halting the loading of oil.

    I am all for an earth ascension, but I still think that we human deserve a update. Like everything on this reality, the human body is another torture and pain machine.     Wind energy fails because Betz’s law. Engines only work by damaging themselves. Engines require external energy or pressure to work, and wind is uncompressed, so it can never work.

    Pretend a gas turbine has a eroi of 10 at 30x pressure. A wind turbine has a eroi of 1:3 because it’s doing the same thing without pressure. If you accept fossil fuel eroi you must accept renewable eroi, because it’s doing the same thing just worse.

    That’s why all the arguments for renewables are self defeating because your proposing the same thing but lower pressure. It’s air pushing on air. The air pushing on the turbine is the same as the air causing friction. There is no pressure to rescue this relationship. In a gas turbine all the gas is pressurized to go in the same direction so no drag. In a wind turbine there’s no pressure. It’s air pushing on air.

    Solar has the same problem. The very act of collecting solar energy is due to weakening the bonds that hold the panel together. The reason photosynthesis works in nature is that it doesn’t actually matter. It’s just nutrients (eg phosphate) being supplied as external energy so their bond energy can be used.

    Solar panels break chemical bonds to form other ones and are therefore a perpetual motion machine.
