Gov. Cuomo says the Department of Defense will set up emergency mobile fuel stations at five locations around the New York City metro area.
Free gasoline will be distributed, with a 10-gallon per-person limit, Cuomo announced at a briefing today. Cars and emergency service vehicles will be able to fill up directly from the 5,000-gallon trucks.
8 million gallons of gas has been delivered in New York he said, and another 28 million gallons is on the way.
“Fuel is on the way,” Cuomo said. “Do not panic. I know there is anxiety about fuel.”
Cuomo said Saturday that temporary fuel trucks are being sent to key locations in New York City and suburban Long Island for emergency vehicles and the public.
New Yorkers have been waiting for hours in long lines for days to get gas since Superstorm Sandy pummeled the region.
The governor said the New York area had a strong sense of community, “but until you have your lights on you’re not happy.”
“We’re not going to stop until we have every house and every home restored. … This was truly a crisis, but it requires patience,” Cuomo said.

Amazing none of the moron east coaster’s planned to see this coming. Folks wake up, this is just a prelude of things to come.
So, have lots of gas on hand, water, food, cash, you name it. Will they do that, next year, or next time NO!
Better yet, move away from these areas.
Humans are stupid!

This is a sick nation. There are still people looking for food but I don’t see any food trucks giving away free $40 meals to each person. (10 gal. x $4 = $40 each person) Tells you where the priorities are. The sheeple might just realize they can exist without a car and gas if they are allowed to go too long without both.

Micro co generators like the ecoisland dhcp sit in your house and generate 5kw and all the hot water you can use. small pool or hot tub anyone.
use nat. gas, propane, methane , butane, etc. as fuel.
did the math and running 24hr 30 days uses 2 gigajoules, about 7 bucks these days. all proven components with a Marathon (since 1970 proven as longest lasting) engine.
I need a little more than 5kw at times so a second inverter (for a full 240 v system) and a back up storage system made of air cylinders that use the same compressor engine as the generator.
no heavy batts, expansion is easy and all you replace is bearings, o rings and brushes. I have a couple of 150 lb gel cells, they are a bitc_. some electric underslab heating to keep me warm and whole system, top of the line, (outback inverters, 3 desiccant protected air tanks)about 30k. Electric bill is gone and the gas bill goes way down and I can power my place from my propane powered car, in emergency. Just starting the underslab as I tile floors, the rest too follow.

I’m going for my free gas in NY. Can’t help it. I figure it will take ten gallons to get there and ten to get back. That’s EROEI of 1:1. Good enough for me, if I get something free. I love free gas. It’s the best kind to burn. Burn ten gallons for free. You won’t see this opportunity again!
The Practician on Sun, 4th Nov 2012 6:06 am
@ DMyers: Actually the EROEI on that trip is more like 0. starting with ten gallons and ending with zero is not a 1:1 eroei

Practician,
Thanks for the constructive criticism. It made me think through it again, to figure out how we came up with these different answers. My conclusion is that we have to split the baby on this one.
I’m not being argumentative or defensive, I promise. I can see I need help in clarifying the subject (EROEI). My reasoning: I use ten gallons to reach NYC, and there I receive ten gallons to get back. So, for each gallon I invested, I got one gallon back. From that I get 1:1. The Practician says that if you start with ten units of energy and end up with none, then EROEI is 0.
We’re both correct because we’re talking about slightly different things. The Practician is talking about NET EROEI. Even though I recaptured my investment, gallon for gallon; in the end, I have nothing to show for it. If EROEI = 1:1, then NET EROEI = 0.
If that is how it works, then I stand corrected, because NET is all that matters.

How many individuals, businesses and politicians will begin to think about how to rely less on cars, trucks and oil for fuel after this disaster is behind us. Will trolleys make a come back in US cities?
Will we learn any lessons from this disaster? Will we rebuild in areas that are likely to see this happen again?
People tend not to change until they are forced to by circumstances.
We should have been able to see this coming.
