Venezuela has the largest oil “resource” on the planet. It also has some of the highest production cost oil on the planet; estimated at 8 times Saudi Light. Most of Venezuela’s oil is more like a ball of Silly Puddy than a flowing liquid. In other words it is mostly crap!

To produce that oil at both the well head, and the refinery takes a lot of diluent. US shale is ideal for the purpose. Importing diluent as Russian, Qatari, or Indonesian condensate would cost an extra $12 to $18 a barrel. Which would be enough to put a marginal producer like Venezuela out of business. In the long term the US will need Venezuelan oil; Venezuela will need US majors to supply the capital, know how, and diluent to bring those fields back to life.

So let’s forget about the good of the US, and the good of the Venezuelan people and concentrate on imperialist, capitalist dog shit. The cost of idealism can be very high, so let’s just write about it, and let someone else pay for it.
