Saudi Aramco looks deeper into Ghawar

Production

New technology to tap into porous rock formations in the Ghawar oil field in Saudi Arabia could expand production at the giant field, the operator said.

The Ghawar field, believed to be the largest oil field in the world, pumps around 6 percent of the world’s crude oil output. The field is producing around 5 million barrels of light crude oil and roughly 2.5 billion cubic feet of natural gas per day.

What is described in the article is an enhanced oil recovery technique. What this means is that the oil field is in substantial decline and has already been through secondary recovery efforts. This is the second step in trying to get the last of a field’s oil out after it ceases to be able to flow under it’s own pressure.
