The latest mission by OPEC and its partners to contain a crude oil glut is entering its most critical phase.
Saudi Arabia, Russia and other major crude exporters have struggled to keep a surplus in check over the past six months. But oil prices remain stuck below levels most of the coalition need to fund their economies.
The coalition’s best chance to tame the oversupply may be this quarter, when oil demand hits an annual peak. After that, world markets enter a weak patch through the winter into 2020. If OPEC and its allies can’t deplete inventories, their primary measure of success, it’ll be hard to avoid the conclusion that their strategy is a bust.
Q3 Is Pivotal For Oil
“The third quarter is the optimal window to put a significant dent into global inventories,” said Michael Tran, a commodity strategist at RBC Capital Markets LLC in New York. “Otherwise the challenge facing OPEC of returning inventories back to equilibrium becomes an even taller task.”
The 24-nation alliance known as OPEC+, a union between the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries and non-members that together pumps about half the world’s oil, has faced a tough job in trying to balance markets since it formed almost three years ago. The ongoing American shale boom unleashed a wave of competing supply.
The task for OPEC+ has only grown harder this year with a slowing global economy and the U.S.-China trade war sapping fuel consumption. In response, OPEC+ has been implementing a production cut of 1.2 million barrels a day.
Mixed Results
The results for the first six months, however, were mixed, with stockpiles in developed nations unexpectedly swelling by 164 million barrels, according to the International Energy Agency.
Oil prices have consequently faltered. After rallying about 40% to more than $75 a barrel in London during the first four months, they have since retreated to stay below the level most OPEC nations require to cover government spending. Brent futures were near $63.50 a barrel Thursday.
Whittling down inventories is OPEC’s top priority. If there is to be a turnaround in achieving that objective, it should be visible now.
Global oil demand is forecast to surge to a record high of 101.4 million barrels a day this quarter as American motorists take to the road for summer vacations, according to the Paris-based IEA.
By keeping output at current rates, OPEC should be able to slash global inventories by about 64 million barrels between July and the end of September, the IEA’s data indicate. OPEC’s own estimates point to an even sharper reduction in stockpiles, of about 149 million barrels.
Summer Demand Is Helping
There are signs that high summer demand is starting to take effect. Crude stockpiles in the U.S. declined by 10.84 million barrels last week in a sixth consecutive week of draws, the longest stretch since early 2018.
But after this quarter, the window of opportunity begins to close.
Demand for OPEC’s crude will ease in the fourth quarter and then retreat sharply in early 2020 as U.S. shale production continues to soar, the IEA predicts.
“The second half of 2019 might be OPEC’s last best shot at tightening the market before the supply glut emerges in 2020,” said Ed Morse, head of commodities research at Citigroup in New York.
Doubts Surround OPEC Strategy
But Bob McNally, president of Rapidan Energy Group and a former oil official under President George W. Bush, said, “I doubt OPEC+ can implement a big enough stock draw in the third quarter to offset the supply tsunami coming next year.”
He added, “And if a recession hits, or Trump strikes a deal with Iran, it’s game over for OPEC no matter how big the third-quarter draw.”

I hope all of you are moving down the consumption ladder voluntarily before it is pulled out from under you. All these oily articles are just telling us how fragile BAU really is. It is on life support in so many ways.
I could ref thousands of articles detailing that assumption, but just open your eyes and look around outside your own little comfort zone. Don’t wait until your I-phone goes blank to see reality. Can you live on 1/2 of your current income? Or, zero income? Think about it, then do something about it. Today!

“US, Germany, Japan in Manufacturing Recessions: Full-Blown Recessions Coming Up”
https://tinyurl.com/y6mwcnbf money maven
“The eurozone economy relapsed in July, with the PMI giving up the gains seen in May and June to signal one of the weakest expansions seen over the past six years. The pace of GDP growth looks set to weaken from the 0.2% rate indicated for the second quarter closer to 0.1% in the third quarter. “The manufacturing sector has become an increasing cause for concern. Geopolitical worries, Brexit, growing trade frictions and the deteriorating performance of the autos sector in particular has pushed manufacturing into a deeper downturn with the survey indicative of the goods-producing sector contracting at a quarterly rate of approximately 1%.
“Flash U.S. Manufacturing PMI at 50.0 (50.6 in June). 118-month low…The overall picture of modest growth conceals a two-speed economy, with steady service sector growth masking a deepening downturn in the manufacturing sector. The survey’s gauge of factory production has slumped to its lowest since August 2009, and indicates that manufacturing output is falling at a quarterly rate of over 1%, led by an increasing rate of loss of export sales.”
“Two-Speed Economies The slowdown in trade is on the verge of spilling over into the entire global economy. Services will not be immune. Nor will the US be immune from from a slowdown in China and the Eurozone. Add Brexit into the mix and the EU will soon be an economic basket case led by Germany. When manufacturing recessions take hold, economic recessions typically follow. And we have bad manufacturing recessions across the board.”

Here’s something alarming;
https://www.reuters.com/article/us-europe-weather-greenland/europes-record-heatwave-threatens-greenland-ice-sheet-idUSKCN1UL15C
Clare Nullis, spokeswoman for the U.N. World Meteorological Organization, said the hot air moving up from North Africa had not merely broken European temperature records on Thursday but surpassed them by 2, 3 or 4 degrees Celsius, which she described as “absolutely incredible”.
“According to forecasts, and this is of concern, the atmospheric flow is now going to transport that heat towards Greenland,” she told a regular U.N. briefing in Geneva.
“This will result in high temperatures and consequently enhanced melting of the Greenland ice sheet,” she said. “We don’t know yet whether it will beat the 2012 level, but it’s close.”
Nullis cited data from Denmark’s Polar Portal, which measures the daily gains and losses in surface mass of the Greenland Ice Sheet. (30)

Memo to beach house movers;
Make sure we have at least a 30 foot (above sea level) rise on our next foundation.
Europe’s heatwave could now cause catastrophic melting of Greenland’s ice sheet
12:27 p.m.
It’s not just Europe that’s sweltering in record-breaking heat.
The same heat wave that swept across Belgium, France, Germany, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom this week, breaking high-temperature records reaching up to 114 degrees, is wafting over to Greenland and could cause catastrophic melting, the United Nations said Friday.
Reuters reports that the heat could cause record melting of one of the world’s largest ice sheets, contributing to rising sea levels around the globe. The Greenland ice sheet has been struggling in recent scorching weeks, according to Denmark data tracking the gains and losses of the ice mass.
“In July alone, it lost 160 billion tonnes of ice through surface melting,” said U.N. World Meteorological Organization spokeswoman Clare Nullis. “That’s roughly the equivalent of 64 million Olympic-sized swimming pools. Just in July. Just surface melt — it’s not including ocean melt as well.”
If the Greenland ice sheet melts entirely, it would raise global sea levels by 7 meters, or approximately 23 feet, Denmark’s data shows. Nullis says rising temperatures, which are linked to manmade climate change, are expected to soar past records regularly by 2050 with biennial heatwaves. “What we saw with this one was that temperature records weren’t just broken,” said Nullis, “they were smashed.” Summer Meza

“How Astronomers Missed the Massive Asteroid That Just Whizzed Past Earth”

“A large asteroid just whizzed past our planet — and astronomers weren’t expecting it. Ranging in size from 187 to 427 feet (57 to 130 meters) wide, the space rock named 2019 OK snuck up on us Thursday morning (July 25). It swung as close as 45,000 miles (73,000 kilometers) from Earth, what one astronomer told The Washington Post was “uncomfortably close.”. If the asteroid had actually collided with Earth, the crash would have caused devastating damage, Michael Brown, an associate professor in astronomy at Monash University in Australia, wrote in The Conversation. Astronomers in Brazil and the United States separately discovered 2019 OK a couple of days ago, but it’s surprise visit was only announced a couple of hours before it passed by. “The lack of warning shows how quickly potentially dangerous asteroids can sneak up on us,”

Let me say, right off the bat, I’m not a lawyer.
While the Arctic’s melting ice and permafrost rages, almost no major news orgs are talking about dire WW ramifications.
For years my chief concern was the future of my only daughter and her six year old “Jamie”.
Suddenly, our concerns are far more immediate.
More than half the world’s populations are under threat. In response, Our Great Leader throws literal gasoline on the fires.
Of all his crimes Our Great Leader, taking public credit, taking actions to dismantle our government’s scientific community has to top the list. This month almost every climate scientist is either being moved out of Washington labs to the Midwest where they can study corn and soybeans. (instead of climate’s effects on AG)
This is part of their whole sort of anti-expert, anti-science agenda.
In the case of the BLM, you’re talking about moving it out of Washington, which will give sort of some of the local economic interests – oil and gas interests – much more leverage over decision-making.on nothing.
One might actually believe removing restrictions would be a boon for US oil and gas.
This is not the case.
All the enviro damage is happening all right.
Bankruptcies in oil patches are greater than ever.

Robert, what happens to those scientists when they start reporting on Midwest GW/CC wrecking havoc on corn and soybean production? Can’t ship them to Alaska, the environmental carnage is too obvious there. Maybe Disneyland where everyone is smiling through their melanoma.
Robert Inget on Sun, 28th Jul 2019 10:57 am
Well, let’s look at what has already happened.
Trump’s plane to double ethanol content in gasoline got washed away with unseasonably wet spring for 40% of corn, 20% of bean farmers.
No big waste of diesel there. Trump was only trying to play farmers because of tariffs.
(it takes more diesel to raise, gather, transport, refine corn and soy beans fuels, than it saves)
BECAUSE so many farmers didn’t plant, there is a slight diesel glut and drop off in light truck and auto sales. (not to mention balance of export pmts)
Indeed, far from delivering on his promise to cut America’s trade deficit, Trump has presided over a ballooning deficit that’s on pace to be some 25 percent higher than when he took office. This is happening at a time when the budget deficit is widening and the country’s public debt is well on its way to exceeding 90 percent of GDP.
Of course, we can’t blame CC. We do know who to blame for ‘Making Deficits Great Again’
Unless USD is devalued next year there is No Way we cope with FORESEEN climate disasters.
Once USD is indeed devalued, hyper inflation follows. Forget about the Fed, interest rates will skyrocket. Because banks are holding so much low interest, LT paper, they too will fail.
Republicans blame Democrats for deficits, climate change, immigrants, original sin.
Democrats admit to being sinners and reelect Trump.

What is a currency war?
A currency war is what happens when those on the losing end of trading relationships decide to engage in a policy of currency devaluation. By keeping their own currency low against their trade competitors their exports will be cheaper. The race to worth less soon becomes a competition with successive rounds of currency devaluation spreading amongst former trade partners.
Trade war to currency war?
Arguably, the US government now, under President Trump, is preparing for what could be a full-blown currency war, between the United States, the European Union and China – plus whoever else the US President happens to be targeting.
