Italian oil tanker falls to pirates

Production

An Italian oil tanker has been hijacked by pirates in the Indian Ocean, news reports here quoted the Italian coast guard as saying Tuesday.

According to the Italian Marine Corps, the captain tried to evade capture by speeding up, suddenly changing gear and firing powerful water jets on the priates’ skiff.

At least five pirates fired rockets and machine guns at the 266-meter Savina Caylin and they were believed to have seized control of the tanker, said Cosimo Nicastro, captain of an Italian coast guard frigate.

No one was injured in the attack, which took place at about 0625 GMT some 500 miles (800 kilometers) off the coast of India and some 800 miles (1,300 kilometers) off the coast of Somalia, he said.

The Italian Navy frigate was heading to the region and was expected to reach there in two days.

The ship had a crew of five Italians and 17 Indians, and was owned by Naples-based Fratelli D’Amato SpA shipbuilders.

Locally generated energy avoids the problems of oil shipments from problem areas.

Wind, solar, wave energy, geothermal and second generation biofuels can all be produced locally with local labor.

Most of these pirates are former fisher men, international long line fishing trawlers have devestated the marine life off the coast of this part of africa. With no other source of income and a little encouragement from ne’er do well sorts piracy is one of the few options left to these people.
Actually capturing a foriegner and then successfully ransoming them for these pirates is the equivalent of winning lotto for me or you.
No get me wrong i’m not trying to excuse their actions, just highlighting one of the root causes which is overlooked by 99% of the MSM
