French Prime-Minister declares: peak oil happened in 2009 thumbnail

We, in 2009, reached the peak in oil production. Production may decrease now that , even though the growth of the global economy has found a train of 4.5%, has said Prime Minister Francois Fillon on April 5 before the National Assembly. He was responding to a question on the current energy prices asked by the Socialist deputy Francois Brottes.

Why “2009” , date not match any known official diagnosis? And why talk about an inevitable decline in production, while oil (starting with the French Total group) believe that this production can be further enhanced?I await the details of Matignon: to follow.

Among the institutional sources, only the International Atomic Energy Agency (IEA) says in its latest annual report that the production of conventional oil (and not the total oil production) will not increase“never”, because it reached a “historic high” in “2006 , not in 2009. In addition, the IEA considers that until at least 2035, the production of conventional oil can be maintained on a undulating plateau and that the total production of liquid fuels will continue to increase.

Not in France a head of government had not issued such a warning. “We are opposite trends of increases in energy costs” , said François Fillon.“The accident, the catastrophe of Fukushima will necessarily affect investments in the nuclear world, and finally, we all know that renewables have a very high cost and therefore we are facing so trend of increased energy costs ” , insisted the prime minister.

The French government joins the long list of prominent sources that suggest the threat of severe shortages of oil for years to come.

In September 2005, Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin, had called on France to “enter into the era of post-oil” . And now …?

I have serious doubts that an “undulating plateau” can be maintained for more than a few years, if at all. The countries exporting oil are consuming more oil themselves, leaving less oil on the global market. Upcoming nations are demanding more oil and Mother Earth is not making any more or at least not any time soon. All the cheap, easy to get oil is gone. Looks downhill from here, amigo…

Oil producing countries are using more oil, why? They are water stressed, have been using non renewable aquifiers to grow food and population and have poor infrastructure. It would make more sense to amend infrastructure and grow less water intensive crops for starters, but it seems the solution is to just throw energy at it.

If production is now declining, and is validated publicly by a government, isnt it time to seriously think about using industrial hemp as a fuel/food source? If you scale it up it could be a cost effective alternative to crude.
