ONGC makes huge oil discovery off West coast of India

Geology

ONGC on Saturday said it has made a huge oil discovery off the West coast that will help the state-owned firm raise its sagging oil output.

The new discovery was made in the currently producing D1 oilfield. The find “will catapult D1 to become the third largest field in western offshore after prolific Mumbai High and Heera”, Oil and Natural Gas Corp (ONGC) said in a statement.

D1, which is currently producing 12,500 barrels per day (bpd), had an approved peak output of 36,000 bpd. With the new discovery, the peak output would jump to 60,000 bpd or three million tonnes a year.

“Earlier, the D1 was known to have initial oil in-place (or inplace reserves) to the order of 600 million barrels (82.20 million tonnes of oil equivalent). After the discovery of the new pool, its total in-place reserves are expected to be in excess of one billion barrels,” it said.

D1, primarily an oil producing field, is situated about 200 km west of Mumbai city in Deep Continental Shelf at a water depth of 85 to 90 metres. The field comprises of four blocks namely D1-4, D1-12, D1-14 and D1-2/5.

The first well in D1-4 block was drilled in the year 1976. The low gas-to-oil-ratio (GOR) and the then understanding of reservoir led to slow pace of exploration and appraisal of the field.

“As a result, the first development scheme for the D1 field was confined only to the D1-4 block in which a total 12 wells were drilled in two phases. After completion of Phase-II, the field achieved a peak oil production of 17,500 barrels per day in the year 2009. Currently, D1 is producing on an average of 12,500 bpd,” it added.

In the next phase of development, ONGC is implementing an integrated development plan for the entire D1 field. This would raise the output to 36,000 bpd by February, 2013.

The new pool now discovered will take the output to 60,000 bpd by 2016-17.

Wow! How many days of energy relief will this new discovery give us? Let’s face it, the low hanging fruit has been picked and now we’re really going to have fork over the bucks to get at the deep stuff.

Another propaganda headline, not even worth reading the article.

Added to all the growth everywhere else this is pretty significant. Its just more evidence the world is awash in oil. The battle ground will now shift from “we are running out of oil” to “if we burn all we have we will die”. But why fight abundant, affordable energy? Where is the profit in that? Where was the profit in peak oil? Clearly, it wasnt true.

If this is huge we’re in trouble… We need to produce several million bbl/day of new cheap stuff each year just to stay in place…

There are about 3 million miles of paved roads in the US today. rough figures say that it took at least 35+ billion barrels of oil equivalent to put them there. Yes, 35,000,000,000+ And it takes millions of barrels daily just to keep them maintained. Does this put today’s ‘huge oil discovery’ in perspective?

SOS….does that tell you why you will NOT be driving your electric/hybrid car when oil is gone? The roads will crumble withing a few decades at best. Some within a few years. But, the falling economy will end it before then. Be patient. Walking is just around the corner.

Lots of people have been predicting the collapse of the Economy for years. The “peak oilers” say we passed peak oil in 2006, but yet, everything remains the same: people are still shopping at malls and wal-mart, eating fast food, driving gas-guzzlers, watching ‘reality’ shows, using their iPads and iPhones etc. this whole “doomer” movement is just a bunch of crap and failed predictions. Nothing ever happens. We have enough oil to fry the planet ,as George Monbiot said.

There is cheap and abundant sources of fossil fuel all over the world. Maugeri said that an oil revolution is upon us. Moreover,We have a century of shale gas in the united states alone. Peak oil is a farce movement. The world economy will continue on as it has for several more decades. Admittedly I’ve been waiting for the collapse to happen, but it never comes. It’s all an illusion.

Rusty…better check. If you are one of the 99%, your income has not really increased in 40 years. Just because you are still buying junk instead of food and necessities does not mean that all is well. We are charging $1,200,000,000,000.00+ to the national credit card EVERY YEAR. Does that sound like the economy is buzzing along? You better open your eyes before that 2×4 hits them.

thats kinda funny, our resident-optimist, Rusty (welcome Rusty) saying we got several decades before the bitter end. Hmmmm, OK, several decades and then armageddon. that works. Why should anybody want society to last more than 20 years? How come we aren’t picking favorite movies….
Obviously, ‘Road Warriors’ (the original) is how its gonna be. A newer version of that genre movie, ‘Book of Eli’ also showing how its gonna be (bit of an odd religious twang, but its still a good movie for demonstrating what Peak Oil is all about)….

So its time to rent movies… there’s 2 titles for ya. :o)

Hey cornys, when we go back to discovering 4 barrels of oil for every one we burn, ill join ya in fantasy land. Hell, ill even go our and buy 10 dollars worth and gas and set on fire on the side of road during rush to show my solidarity to our new golden age of perpetual driving, shopping and consuming.

However, since were actually still burning 3-4 barrels of old oil for every new one we discover, and its getting worse with every passing year now for decades, despite non-stop drilling baby drilling, I think I wont be joining you on the freeway for that 20 mile drive to starbucks for a 5 dollar latte to celebrate just yet.

    Ok with ya’ll?

EROEI is getting worse every year. Eventually it will take more energy to extract the oil (that we are awash in), than it will give us. If I told you there was enough Methane on Titan to satisfy our energy needs for 10 000 years I would be really close to the truth but it doesn’t help us does it?

“Hey cornys, when we go back to discovering 4 barrels of oil for every one we burn, ill join ya in fantasy land.” they are starting to- it is called shale oil. Anticipated from the Bakken and Eagleford alone will be enough to replace the declining production from Ghawar that Simmons was so concerned about. There are at least dozens of other such plays in the world, possibly some in Russia that are much larger, and the cost to produce this oil is about half the current price of Brent crude.

  13. MarkR on Sun, 12th Aug 2012 4:00 pm

As far as running out of tar to pave roads, don’t worry Bill, there is plenty of low EROEI stuff to still pave them with to drive my electric car on, probably 1000 years worth. For non-energy uses, EROEI is a moot point. Iron has a very low EROEI and we still find the stuff useful. After the stuff to make tar with runs out I am confident molecular nanotechnoloy will come up with a solution to replace asphalt.

    “60,000 bpd by 2016-17”

    Huge oil discovery?

Yawn, tiny Holland consumes 1 million bpd (for how much longer?).
