Zimbabwe: Coal Shortage Hits Manufacturers

The manufacturing sector has been severely hit by coal shortages forcing some companies to import from neighbouring Botswana at considerable expense in scarce foreign currency.

Hwange Colliery Company (HCC) has the potential to meet coal requirements both for the local and export markets, but this has not been possible due to perennial operational and financial constraints at the company. Most manufacturers contacted yesterday confirmed they had been facing serious coal shortages over the past four weeks.
