This week’s announcement by Secretary of State, Peter Hain, that Northern Ireland has the opportunity to become a centre of alternative energy excellence is good news for the farming industry.
Given the backdrop of a fast-increasing oil prices, the new EU support measures, the imminent introduction of the Nitrates Directive and the ongoing uncertainty about farmgate commodity prices, there is now a growing body of opinion in Northern Ireland supporting the view that farmers can actively incorporate alternative energy production and land use systems into their future business plans!
