We must apply the brakes on unrestrained growth

Two and a half centuries ago we humans began to replace muscle power sustained by renewable food resources with machines with a hunger for coal, then gas, oil, and nuclear energy, none of them renewable.

Economic development took off, and with accelerating speed, is now hurtling out of control, heading for our self-destruction.

Nobody knows how to apply the brakes if there are any.

With the world’s population now 6.6billion and set to grow to nine billion by 2050, our Treasurer urges, nay bribes, parents to increase their families! If we are to reach the end of the 21st century with any optimism about the 22nd, we need leaders capable of taking an holistic view of the issues.

…Perpetual growth is clearly unsustainable, but so far no one is prepared to float the idea of a no-growth economy. Are we one human race? Or are we greedy nations doomed to fight for the survival of our own standard of living at the expense of billions of the less fortunate in the developing world?
