Added to that are immense amounts of oil and other fossil fuels, invested in the combined proven and projected reserves of oil shale, natural gas and petroleum, coal and uranium in North America. These will be available and necessary for us to make an orderly transition to our economic future, as we buy time to develop non-carbon technologies.

Brazil just opened its second huge offshore field and became energy independent. Prospects for similar finds off the U.S. coast are regarded as excellent, and finding one would go a long way toward reducing our dependence on insecure foreign oil. Drilling close to infrastructure already in place offshore could produce oil in as little as a year and a half.
